Depends, if you're thinkign Chelsea tractors, I'd agree with every word. The thing is, 4x4's can also be bloody useful vehicles for what a lot of people need to do to earn their living. Likewise, in a lot of circumstances, they're the safest thing you can ever have.

I think he,and his family,would've been safer in a ten year old Ford Galaxy 4x4 Ghia with a Volkswagen R32 3.2 V6 under the bonnet,on one and a half sets of Suzuki 'busa throttle bodies,lowered 60mm with the springs cut another half a coil,on banded T25 transporter steels..

..if the springs were still matched in length and bound to the shocks,the banding weld was of sufficient quality,the conversion was done properly and he didnt drive like a tool.

When i was a kid,i was a regular passenger in the boot of a new seven seater '84 Austin Montego 1.6 HL estate. And i felt perfectly safe,nothing wrong with it,there's no need for seven seaters to be the size of trucks.

But that's just my opinion - i respect others freedom to drive whatever they wanna drive,as long as its safe. And i believe we must have that freedom.

7 Kids though. You still need room for him and his wife. 110 CSW's were all 12 seaters up until a while back. My first car was a 12 seather land rover, My liscence only entitled me to carry 8 IIRC. Plus mine only had seatbelts in the two front seats.

Also I would rather have to get out of a land rover thats under water than a people carrier, dont they usually have a sliding door? nightmare. At least in a land rover you can push the windows out with your feet if you have to, they arent bonded in like on modern cars.

the only thing a road worthy chelsea tractor is good for is a farmer and off road sports . i say they are dangerous because imagine if you a range hit you in a polo , it would just drive over you = dead . their is alot of instances i can think of looking back in the past when a range would have seen me rolling over or falling off the road = not safe

Yeah I see what you are saying, although the door still has to pop out before it will slide back, and you have no windows you can open to climb out of in the back. At least with the land rover you have the windows in all 4 doors, and the two sliding windows at the back. The rear door can be opened from the inside easily.

Yes, people are right about 4x4's, no need for it on the school run. The only thing I would add to the list of farmers and off road enthusiasts is tradesmen. A land rover will tow 3500Kg's (4000 with linked air brakes). There are also plenty of people who need a capable vehicle just to get to their house in winter, lets not forget equestrian enthusiasts, caravan people, etc etc. No real excuse for so called 'chelsea tractors', maybe if the council wasnt sticking speedbumps everywhere people wouldnt buy them for the school run.

But the danger of a 4x4 hitting you is again no worse than a van or a lorry.

Thing I can't work out is, if she's had 6 kids already, would you really want to go through the act of creating a 7th with her?

Come on now I really dont think that is fair. Some people have a lot of kids, its only in recent times people only have 2 or 3 kids anyway. Wind back 100 years and they were firing them out like no tomorow.

vans have a lower centre of gravity than a disco , and generally lorry drivers have extra trainning and tests than your average disco driver , would have said a lorry would be worse though

vans probably weigh a lot less than your average disco (unloaded)

Yes vans do have a lower COG. But the stopping distance is terrible on an unladen van.

Either way none of us want to get hit by anything. And its all relative. If everyone rode mopeds then we would be complaining about the big heavy polos that could hit us

Makes no difference if you know what to do.

You dont try to open any door of any submerging vehicle,as it wont open. Thats why people panic and drown.

Instead,you use your time with air to unlock the door and get prepared on the handle. Then you wait until the interior completely fills with water. Then,when you're blind and holding your breath,you then open the door - and even for a child,it opens slowly but easily.

Pressure balance,see. Those kids clearly didnt have the education needed..

Yeah I know you have to wait until the pressure equalises but where is the air escaping from? I know its a land rover but until you open somthing Its gonna take a long time. And if the door you have hold of is at the front of the vehicle and the vehicle is nose down with the air pocketing at the back I wonder if you can open it once your door is submerged, or if you have to wait for the whole vehicle to fill. If its the latter then you would probably drown in the time it takes for the back to fill with water.

I think my instinct would be to open a window, when all the waters finished gushing in I would swim out.

Saying his kids were poorly educated is a little unfair I think, after all many of them were very young and probably couldnt even swim. 3 of them did make it out.
