Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

can anyone remember what the engine code is to do this? and what will i need from the GT and from the donor vehicle?

any help will be much appreciated

ABD is also the 1.4 engine in the early Mk3 Golfs

Bare ABD engine and all ancilliaries from a GT. Not forgetting the GT camshaft ;)

what kinda power gains does this give then?!

Are the pistons up to it?

Not that much gain in the BHP stakes but more torque.

The engine is well upto the job, no worries there...

i take it it revs a LOT slower then?

I heard Gaz's car up at the pod, sounded a bit different to the normal GT's

Not been on here much today, but it looks like everythings been covered. :lol: I cant honestly say I noticed a difference to how it revved comapred to a standard GT. Or wether it sounds different? Last RR day it got 93bhp, which is only 3 more than what a similarly modded gt got on the same day, but it got around 15lbft more torque. Theres more to come too hopefully now its got the right dizzy, and theres a 4-branch going on it this weekend. :D

This is the last RR printout I got, As you can see the torque starts falling off after about 4000rpm which is why it doesnt make alot more power than a GT. Hopefully the 4-branch will give me a flat torque curve for longer.

The little divot in the torque curve around 3000rpm is one of the side effects of having the wrong dizzy. (too advanced at this point)

Should be interesting next weekend. I will try and bring my previous years graph to compare if I get a run.

Do you not think that the inlet side of things caused the torque dropoff? The GT cam is going to be milder in the 1.4 engine and the lower compression can't be helping.

It could be alot of things, time will tell.

Might as well keep the 1.4 head as well, unless you want to get some headwork done at the same time. As far as anyone can tell the heads are the same. And yes, it fits the standard mk3 polo mounts. :D

Might be a dumb question but what is meant by ancilliaries? :oops:

The bits bolted to the main unit. Inlet manifold, dizzy, alternator etc.

if a abd (1.4) fits in why not use an abu (1.6) engine from the mk3 golf :?

The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most similarities to mk3 polo engines like no separate tensioner and metal waterpump) but even so there are complications. The same applies to any other 1.4 (eg from a mk4 polo) None of these engines are as easy to put GT injection on as The ABD.

There are two problems with 1.6s

1) The GT inlet manifold has a different bolt pattern to the 1.6 cylinder head. The only head you can realistically use to be able to use the GT inlet is one from a mk1. (GT head is flat, ABU one has combustion chamber in it, so GT head on ABU = mega compression ratio! :shock: )

Using an early head creates more problems than it solves really. Dizzy drive is different and a custom vernier needs making to convert the cam pulley to round tooth profile - Its either that or convert the engine to square tooth pulleys, but doing so may mean you need to get a longer cambelt (the 1.6 block is taller so the cambelt needs to be an inch or two longer) and since this isnt a standard belt you may have a job finding one thats any use.

Adapting the GT inlet to fit has been done but requires special welding skills. 8-) Chop the end of a GT inlet, and an ABU one, and weld together.

2) The front mount for the alternator. On the GT/ABD there are 3 bolts to attach this mount to the engine block, on the 1.6, only the top two are present. Some people dont bother about the extra bolt (this is TUV approved apparently) But Steve 86c whos done this conversion isnt convinced and has done things properly by welding a bit of engine block in the correct place from another engine for the third bolt.

Other minor problems:

As mentioned before, the block is taller, so the downpipe needs to be lengthened by about 1cm.

The GT cam doesnt line up with the 1.6 cam timing marks, so some thought is required as to how to get it right.

would it be worthwhile putting a 1.4 bottom end on my gt which will soon have the following mods:

268' Cam

Ported and polished head

4-2-1 manifold

In short, yes. The 1.4 engine has slightly lower compression than the GT engine, so some power will be sacrificed, but made up for by the 119 extra CCs :) I've been looking (not very hard) into fitting GT pistons to raise the compression ratio to around 11:1, but I've not got very far yet. :shock:
