Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

Featured Replies

If there's no sticker in the boot or on the cambelt cover, the ABD engine can be identified (in golfs) by the flat topped cambelt cover, mk2/3 polo style steel rocker cover and the top of the alternator cradle sits flush with the top of the block. All of these things are different on the later 1.4s (and all 1.6s) ie they have a curved top cambelt cover, aluminium rocker cover, alternator cradle sits about an inch down from the top of the block. Also note the early 1.6, while they have the steel rocker cover, they have the round cambelt cover and cradle further down

In Ibizas its more difficult as they were also fitted with the AAU and AAV engines which are visually identical to the ABD

The engine code is stamped below the gap between the thermostat housing and the top of the gearbox. In this area you will often see a barcode, it is stamped below that. Nearly Impossible to see while the engine is in though.

  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

when trying to identify an engine code........i ring VW/Seat & give tham the car's reg. no. :D

are there any compaie in the surrey area that do this conversion?dont think i fancy it myself but it does sound like itd b good!

I imagine pitstop would do it but this kind of conversion is only really worthwhile if you do the work yourself. Although having said that the 1.6 would benefit from some trick bits like a custom manifold and an uprated front engine mount.

Sorry to bump this again, but what is the engine code for the 100bhp 1.6 in the Polo classic?? Is this a viable conversion option? Has it been done before? Surely 100bhp and a fair amount of tourque must be worth considering or is the block to tall/wiring to complicated?

Is this engine MPI?

I missed all this due to the title - I'm using carbs in a MK2. I chose the AEE as i figured that if i was gonna do the conversion,i might aswell get some reasonable power out of it. Was surprised to find it in a basic '98 Skoda Felicia estate. And as Ema reported, its not a mild gain :-D MikeyC got around the starter differently,i used a 1.4 item and 1.0 mpi flywheel.

The reason i used a 1.0 flywheel was because i wanted the lightest one possible, but it had to have the close-to-engine ring gear for the later, skinnier starter. This was a bit silly - when i blip the throttle, the rev-counter dives off the clock in a fraction of a second.. And thats when its in gear!

But a heavier fly would've made lifting off the throttle in corners even more dangerous,in this circa 730kg car. Afterall, its still heavier than the original 1.3S item. '86C' welded on the third anchorage point. Best idea. I bolted on a solid billet steel bracket using two other points on the end of the block to re-inforce the existing mount at the third point.

Other than that, its all pretty simple. The seperate cambelt tensioner isnt suited to the narrower alternator belt pulley, but this wasnt much of a problem, little delicate shaving. Obviously the carb manifold didnt fit (was gonna use a 1.8 Pier),so i fitted Honda Fireblade bike carbs. You legally can too,on a pre-93 car.

The standard AEE camshaft is the lumpiest i found, and with a little of my special adjustment graduate.gif the engine is running a good 120bhp - probably more, which would invalidate my insurance.. The torque? Thats something else entirely, taking it into well modified G40 territory. Remember G40 offside driveshaft and brakes!

Post whore! The AFT engine (100bhp 1.6 polo classic lump) is a tall block and wont fit without a subframe.

Well that sucks!

How about 16v engines? For example the Polo/Lupo 100bhp 1.4 16v? How easily do they go in? Has anyone done it? I've seen it on european cars but what about over here?

And how about the AEX (1.4 8v MPI) engine? What power does that generate? Very tuneable?

Edited by Qwerty

AEX needs a 1.6 head as the ports are very small on the 1.4. 16v engines go in but cause problems around the bulkhead and brake servo/master cylinder. A few people have fitted 16v enignes into mk1s and 2s over here. (although I can't think of their names right this second) All the 16v engines have the front mount bolt missing issue

hey guys sorry to make this subject even longer but ime just getting so lost in all the converstation lol, so if i was to keep my gt head with work, a ss 4-2-1, cam, all ancillaries etc and use a 1.4 ABD bottom end it would be better than all of that on a GT bottom end, if so are we talking much better?

yes you will get more power and torque than you would from a 3F. The slightly lower compression is more than made up for by the extra 119cc.

thanks would you say a gt head will give better results on the 1.4 bottom end or jus a whole 1.4 engine, bottem end and head,

The abd head has quite big ports already. They match the inlet gasket.

sorry mate not reali that intelligent me mate lol, but are you saying use the abd head and get work done to that insted of a gt head.

Just a quick question guys as it seem the basis of the engine swap is to keep it on the GT ECU

What if you swaped everything over gearbox, engine, loom and ecu? what would you go for

ok its not for a polo its for a golf mkI but I figured you guys would know best?

thnak you in advance

which engine do you fancy? for the golf I would go for a 1.6, but the 1.4 is a lot easier to put in in many ways.

to be honest the one that gives me nice power/torque. as off course engien going to be Decat and airfilter so that free up some horses/let it rev nicer.

Ill have to look into the 1.6 :D

How does the 1.3 mount in the mk2 golf? If its the same as the mk3 golf (mount at rear of engine, mount on gearbox bellhousing, mount on back of box) then there may not be any issues with fitting the 1.6

ime thinkin building a turbo gt, i have read your article, and am left a little confused still, i will use a 1.4(ABD) bottom end but will it be wiser to either use 1.4(ABD) head or the gt head bearing in mind either way it will be getting head work done to it.

Cheers

Ryan

iv just done my abd today! took 6 hours from strt to it running!

started first turn of the key!
