Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me the best aftermarket cam (with vernier) to use on the ABU and also best/easiest/cheapest way to raise the C/R? Thanks.

  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

I've just sourced an AEE engine with 42k on t he clock from an r plated felicia to convert my gt as its dying from lack of oil pressure. I have a few questions to be clarified.

1/ As the inlet manifold bolting pattern is so close would I get away with slotting the holes instead of the cut and shut method?

2/ My Gt ECU has a fahrvergnugen chip, should I leave this in or replace it with the original?

3/ Should I use my gt gearbox or source a 1.3spi box, I think thats the 8p box

4/ How long would you think it would take for the swap? I am a competent driveway mechanic and used to maintaining my own cars and have built a few track day cars and kit cars.

Thanks

Mart

You'd be better doing the inlet properly, you don't want leaks or anything. The inlet ports on an AEE are round, and oval on the GT engine - so you'd need to match them, anyway.

Keep using the fahshshsgneuhaha chip, theres not any point going back to the original really.

gearbox is your preference really, i'd use the GT box unless you're using very small wheels.

With all parts/tools its do-able in a day, but set aside 3 easy days to do it first time.

ok, i'm planning on using 14"wheels so I'll give the gt box a go seing as I have it.

Also what year golf gti injectors and afm do I need?

Been trying to search but haven't found a diffinitive answer, which starter motor will I need for the aee conversion with a gt box. Trying to get everything together upfront so cant test fit.

You'll need to use the AEE starter with any 6n flywheel. You cant use the GT flywheel unless you source a rare '94-only spec starter motor.

Incidentally,i wouldn't use a GT box,because its a lower-revving engine than the GT,and requires longer ratios.

i got my 94 spec starter from gsf, not that rare.

gt box was fine on my aee. revved to 7 quite happily. pulled like a train it did :)

Thanks for the info guys, decided that I am just going to go for the easy option and replace the dead gt lump with another one after being let down on two engines after being let down on two engines that I thought I'd secured.

Ema - do you remember exactly how you got the 94 spec starter from GSF? Their website only lists it as 84-94, unless they simply stock the thinner '94 spec for all Mk2s and Mk3s...

Many thanks.

it might have been maga spares thinking about it. tom rang and ordered it, bloke said there were 2 0r 3 different 1s, so he sent them all and we got the one that fitted. had them on the shelf.

makes life easier when your other half owns a garage :)

i will be making a start on this conversion soon

can anyone tell me what the differences between the AEE, ABU and i think AEA and does anyone know the compression ratio of these engines?

AEE 9.5:1 - ABU 9:1

can the abu be raised to 10:1 with min effort do you know?

^ good question, anyone kniow?

When swapping the heads on the abd with the 3f head which head gasket should i use, 3f or abd? also are there any issues with cam timing?

read the thread, this has been mentioned over and over. the 3F and the ABD use the same casting, the only difference once assembled is the GT has double valve springs and a better camshaft. you do not need to swap the head!! only the camshaft and springs. it is likely they will use the same headgasket.

possible you can skim the head to reduce the combustion chamber, may require piston modifications depending on how much you remove.

If I was to run bike carbs on an AEE, could I use the Ignition system and dizzy from a Mk2?

all the information you need for bike carb ignition is pinned in the bike carb section :-)

That's kinda why I asked, I had a look through the fitting carbs to an AFH and there's some niggles with fitting the dizzy. Just wondering if there's any problems like that or is it pretty much just plug and play?

I know its been mentioned but theres not been a deffinate answer!

on an ABD mk3 what gearbox would you recomend with running 13s with 50s or 45s

standard GT or another type?

cheers.

You can fit AEE pistons to the ABU to raise compression to 9.8:1

I'd recommend an 8P box if you're running small wheels with low profile tyres.

Perhaps an 'uncool' question - but I do ~450 (moterway) miles a week in my polo, so quite important to me...

From experience, does anyone know what sort of MPG a GT/ABU or GT/AEE conversion return on an 8P box?

Cheers

Plug and play - its just that the dizzy will sit at a different angle when timed because the cam drive hole is cut at a different degree.

You can drill a second hole though,if you find you run out of adjustment whilst timing up the dizzy (i just filed the slots a fraction longer).

i ran my gt aee on an 8p box for that exact reason. i was getting 350 odd miles to a tank. about 40 mpg. sometimes more if i did long runs, sometimes less if i gave some stick. :) hope that helps :)
