Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

I'm having problems understanding this. According to wikipedia the 1.4 ABD produces 53-59hp, how does connecting that to Mk3 GT ancillaries make it more powerful than a 75hp 1.3?

  • Yeah,one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine,complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

Because the 1.3 would produce even less with the ABD fuel system. 1.3 vs 1.4 with the same fuel system = no brainer.

So whats changed in the fuel system?

Main difference I guess would be that the 1.3 GT engine is MPI where as the ABD is SPI. Also the GT cam is more aggressive and the GT bottom end has a higher compression ratio (obv. not in a 1.4 conversion).

Yeah, and the ABD bottom end has a bigger displacement. I'm guessing it has longer con-rods aswell?

AFAIK, the ABD/3F hybrid drops compression slightly. Most people report about the same BHP, but more torque.

Oh right that makes sense, MPI makes a fair difference then. Torque is good, I like torque.

i ran my gt aee on an 8p box for that exact reason. i was getting 350 odd miles to a tank. about 40 mpg. sometimes more if i did long runs, sometimes less if i gave some stick. :) hope that helps :)

I think the Golf/Vento has the wrong bolt pattern for the gearbox.

I got my gearbox from a 1.6 8v 75ps Polo Classic 4dr saloon which had an AEE fitted.

I'll say sorry in advance if I'm annoying anyone with these questions as alot seems to have been covered

BUT

to dumb it down for an idiot such as myself...

i have my gt full and running, but the head gasket has gone for a second time and i dont think anymore can be skimmed off the head after last time, plus i apparently have a chip in my head somehow?!

and at home i have a 1.4 8v from a mk3 golf....

so could i use the 1.4 engine parts (e.g head) to fix my gt?

what bits will i need to put them both together? IF it will work?

Yeah you can use the ABD head to fix your GT :-) Or you could just fit the whole ABD if you like.

What I don't understand about the whole 1.4 GT is, how does the GT fuelling supply enough fuel to feed the extra 119ccs? I would have thought it would run lean all the time?! I haven't ever run an injection motor so I don't really understand how things like this may be affected with bore change. On carbs you can just change the jet sizes to suit, but how does this work on an injection system if the injectors stay the same size?

Is it just a case of the AFM recognising more air being sucked in by the larger bore, and the ECU keeping the injectors open for longer or something to increase the fuel supply to match? Or the lambda sensor recognising a lean mixture and agian, adjusting the injectors to suit? Or all these things rolled into one to create the right fuelling?

And just to add to the thread, having run both a GT, and an ABD engine on the same bike carbs, the ABD was miles faster! It was really difficult to set off without wheel spinning :lol: My mk1 Golf would actually be able to keep up with modern cars as opposed to being beaten by absolutely everything (Vauxhall fronteras and standard Yaris' included :oops: ) whilst running the GT. And that was with the carbs having been set up for the GT by Bogg Bros, and not set p for the ABD! I can't begin to think how quick it would be after being set up correctly for the ABD! :lol:

o.k cheers mate, i'm guessing i can just use the gt headgasket with the 1.4 head? or will i need the proper 1.4 gasket?

and tbh mate i probably know less than you when it comes to injection and that, I'm on the side of good ol' carbs lol

shit... reading all this is pickling my head! I'm half half way through rebuilding my coupe s and reading this is giving me doubts haha. I've used the standard bottom end from a c reg coupe s and have fitted a 1.4 abd head with a 4 branch n currently running a dmtl weber carb but i have twin 40's ready to go on as soon as the manifold is ready. will this work n what sort of gains am i looking at???

^^ Dont you have the 1.4 ABD bottom end? That would be better than your 1.3. Make sure your bottom end has the chain-driven oil pump because the oil pump from a C reg is probably the direct drive design and this makes for a weakest link with the later head you're using.

More down to the lambda showing the emissions as being low, and the ECU putting more fuel in to get rid of the lean. You can fit bigger injectiors, (86c used 2litre cavaliar ones on his 1.6) but I doubt a 1.4 would get anywhere near leaning out the standard injectors so long as they're in reasonable health.

Nothing to stop you chucking the whole engine in with the GT cam, inlet fannymould and injection as far as I see it.

hmmmm , is the c reg the early spec engine? Mechanical lifter head? 10 bolt rocker cover?

If so then like mikey said, your direct drive oil pump isn't up to the job to serve the hydraulic cylinder head with enough oil.

Your original head is actually a better head anyway, A mechanical 1272. The ABD head is identical to any other hydraulic head (AAV,3F, G40)

I would just put your original head back on and use the other parts you have stated.

Note this is only if your bottom end is from the early spec engine. The best thing you could do is swap out your bottom end with one of a higher displacement, AAE or ABD, Then fit either head to it.

Also, dont the early heads have a fuel pump housing on?

All mk2's have mechanical ran fuel pumps on the back of the cylinder head if that's what you mean?

People always ask about speed,but character is so important. Id go with the whole ABD bottom end and early head (as long as the early head's valves are flush with the face of the head,for correct compression,as some earlier engines had countersunk valves).

This means points ignition,if you dont have the minerals to modify the cam for the later dizzy,but its fine if serviced regularly.

You can fit either a Saab dizzy, or as I recently found out, a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 dizzy. Both have vac advance, will fit the cam and head and have the hall sender plug to fit late mk2 polo/golf ignition amp looms. That'll get you electronic ignition.

Saab dizzy is hard to get hold of but I'd imagine 205 ones will be pretty easy!

Can fit a KR 16v dizzy for elec ignition without vac advance, unless you fit the KR ECU and loom as well...
