Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

i was just wondering if i would be able to fit a turbo manifold designed for all 8v engines inc g40 to this abd conversion? are the ports all the same size and would the engine be able to handle the boost as the conpression ration is still quite high.

i will be using a 1994 mk3 polo gt as the doner car and will be fitting the abd block to my gt head rather than changing the swapping the cams over.

  • Yeah,one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine,complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

Yep, the ABD and PY (G40) cylinder head castings are identical, meaning that the ports are identical.

I'm using an AAV engine (same compression as the ABD, only 1.3 nor 1.4L though).

Been runnning it on 10-15psi so far for ~2k miles.

Yes, that is an ABU. Slightly simpler than AEE but with reduced compression.

is the lower compression noticable i saw somewhere that its only a .5 difference???

Personally I'd gladly take the lower compression because it's a (slightly) easier conversion.

sorry for all the questions and this probs wont be the last one but what makes the abu conversion easier than the aee conversion?

is it just just that the gt cam doesnt line up propperly in the aee or is there more to it than that??

EDIT: just re read the tread and the difference is there is a plastic inlet on the aee plus a few other little bits.

ok last question before i go out and buy an engine...

would there be any way of boring out the abd block to a 1.5? if this is possible where would i find the parts to do this?

my thinking is if this is possible it would sort out the compression issue and at the same time give you an extra 100cc without having to cut and shut inlets and grind bolts ect like you have to do with the aee conversion.

As far as I know the ABD can be bored out to 77mm to give a displacement of 1466cc. It is more common to do this on the slightly longer stroked diesel (1W engine) to give 1473cc. Pistons do exist to give 11:1 compression on the diesel engine. I know someone who had a set made and didn't use them, but he wants a pretty penny for them, that's if he's willing to sell them at all. I think they may be Acrylite forged ones. There are no standard oversize pistons of this size.

Not sure what you mean about running the diesel on gt management? Not without completely stripping it and fitting a new head, pistons and rods from a petrol anyway.

The 1W block is the same as an ABD (maybe with a bit more ribbing for added strength). I'm pretty sure you could use the oversize pistons designed for the Diesel on the ABD. As they are designed with G40 or GT rods in mind, so you'd need a set of those. The throw of the crank is 0.4mm shorter on an ABD, meaning the pistons will be 0.2mm below where they would be at top dead centre, which you may be able to offset with a thinner headgasket.

I am not 100% on the price, but I believe they are in the region of £600 new, maybe more now.

Would it be possible to use the 1W bottom end with the usual 1272cc head and assosicated bits?

Just thinking of the next step up from a ABD.

or would the C/R be far too much?

Not really a step up, there is only 7cc difference between the two. The Diesel runs 22:1 compression ratio. So what do you reckon? :lol: There is no point bothering with the diesel unless you are going to overbore it. The ABD is good enough for most. If you're really having nightmares about the slightly lower compresion ratio. You can get the pistons machined down so you can fit a thinner headgasket.

is if i was to get an abd block and head then swap the abd rods for m gt ones i would then be able to fit the 1W 'big bore' pistons?

then get the thinner head gasket or i could skim the head by 2mm?

could you find out how much your mate would be after for the piston but only if you are 100% sure that i will be able to conect them to gt rods.

i wouldnt be buying them for a while as i need to save my pennies but its nice to now the price.

The head skim won't work because the head is flat so skimming won't increase the compression ratio (well, maybe a tiny bit) Even if you make no modifications the compression ratio will still be at least 10.5:1 It's 0.2mm btw, not 2mm!

Had a bit of a brain dead moment then lol, The 1W is a 1.4 in standard from aint it. I was thinking it was a 1.5.

I'm thinking ABD with the copper headgasket then. Do you know of anyone who knows the skimming dimensions etc?

No need to get a custom gasket, a mk4 1.4/1.6 gasket will do the job.

I don't think they are copper (they are a grey colour) but I couldn't tell you what metal it is for sure. The headgaskets for the all-aluminium engines look more like copper, but even those are more of a gold colour.
