Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

Featured Replies

Nobody can offer you any guarantees when it comes to such a custom engine, mate.

Easiest way to a 1.45 litre unit would be to stick the ABD crank in the 6n 1.4 unit, because that uses 76.5mm pistons.

But it'd never be so simple, the head gasket is unlikely to clear the extra 1.5mm and the steel gasket wont offset the extra piston height. So you may need to deck a taller cylinder block (1.6 8v) or overbore the ABD.

Then there's the compatibility between the crank and pistons. You'll want stronger rods but first they've gotta fit - the gudgeon pins in 6n engines i believe are different,as with the GT pins.

I looked into making a 1.45 16v AFH using ally block and ABD crank but couldn't be arsed with the hassle of the older series unit and made it up to 1.6 litres with all standard spec post-'95 VW parts.

But it depends what you want from the engine, each one has its own nature - the ABD is a sweet unit standard when its got a better fuel system strapped to it (i ran one on bike carbs,GT mpi has been done by a few),you may find that spending hundreds of pounds getting another 70cc isn't really worthwhile.

But if you want extra capacity over 1.4 litres without going for the long stroke 1.6 i dont see any easy way forward.

Not really any help, but that's my bit of experience.

  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

hi guys

I'm running standard 1.3 MH on carb with 5 speed box in my mk2

what will be better:

to bolt on complete AEE to my box and keep mk2 flywheel

or

put AEE bottom end with my MH head+GT cam + my standard box and flywheel?

will run it on CBR 600 carbs, so want to keep my mk2 ignition/dizzy amd will have custom bike carb manni

????

i found already AEE in Feilcia :))

cheers Adam

I want to build a 1.4 ABD engine for my mk2f (1.0).

I have got a rebuilt GT head and cam to go on it and Bike carbs.

But can I use my 1.0L flywheel and clutch on it? Also is the 1.0L flywheel lighter than a ABD?

What cam has the highest lift GT or ABD?

To raise the CR is it right I will need to get the block and piston's skimmed.

Also will my 1.0L starter motor be ok to use.

Thanks

Use 1.0 flywheel and starter. Use any clutch, the 1.0 one is 180mm ant so you want the ABD's 190mm one, but then a 200mm one fitted to various Polos inc. most 6n2's fits too.

I wouldn't bother with raising the compression. It does mean getting around 1mm of the piston crowns hacked off so you can run a metal gasket, but also you'll then have to have new valve pockets cut into them, as you'll have hacked off the old valve pockets.

Will the 1.4 lump and box drop straight into 1.0 using the 1.0l map? Ecu and loom as I remember a few people saying a 1.4 throttle body fits the aau inlet

this is the first time I've posted anything on here, i have a mk3 polo gt if i go to the mk3 golf 1.4 engine does my MPI system of the GT all swap over? also what happens with fueling if I'm running the standard gt ECU with a 1.4 block surely itll be under fueling? if id have to get it re-maped to let it fuel more is it possible to run the 1.6 block? also would i have to make any injector changes for these conversions?
massive thanks for any help as i say I'm new to the site and thought id ask people who know what they're talking about rather than cock it up my self.
cheers Nick.

All of the info u are after is in the first couple of pages all you need to is fit the abd with your gt head every then works as normal. This will not under fuel as the ecu will compensate for it. The 1.6 is a little harder but have a read through the first couple of pages and u will find all the info u need

cheers.

the last 4 or so pages are just repeated questions though - people should read the thread properly and try not to be so lazy - all the info is there in black and white..

thanks for all involved : )
