  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

if the 1.4 lump gives a lower compression ratio surely that'd mean it was better for turboing aswell right? Not planning on turboing myself, just interested in if it would work!

Its still a bit high, but like you say it could be worse...

Also, it may have already been answered but which golf did the engine come from that I need? What other cars did it come in? Just so I know what I'm looking out for.

mk3 golf/vento and mk2 ibiza up to about '95 Has to be engine code ABD. 8-)

i just fitted a 1.6 AEE to my mk1 golf but with all the 1.3GT injection parts, it runs but it really needs setting up!

anyone got any tips, i been playing with the spring tension in the afm with lambda disconnected but to get it to rev freely it runs really rich, anyone know if a golf afm will help?

its not a hard conversion, no welding was required on the inlet manifold, although my solution isnt what you would call elegant, only using 6 of the 8 bolt holes and they are slotted (by cutting the manifold)

the biggest ball ache was the starter, the original is too fat for the bigger AEE crankcase so i got a starter off a later 1.6 polo, this was wrong also so i had to get a recon starter for a earlier (~92) polo and it was thinner than the original and it works fine

apart from that its just the coolant pipes and whether your bonnet will shut to worry about (mine does only just!)

Gaz any RR results or noticeable differences with a 4 branch if you have one yet?

Any further trials with GT pistons?

I'm thinking ABD block/ancilliaries from a GT/cam from GT or a modified one/golf afm/head work/bigger valves/4 branch/stainless steel system/independant throttle bodies + associated parts like uprated injectors/management ....would lead to something pretty cool!

It made better torque with the 4-branch but top end power was the same. The engine really needs some headwork to live up to it's full potential.

GT pistons dont fit. :(

Regarding the compression ration, could you not do it the old fashioned way and ski a bit off the head? may be not up to 11:1 but there might be a way to do it.

Also would the gear box fit, I am just think of skimming the ABD heda, adding the GT cam and then putting in the gear box as well??

cheers

The head is flat, so any gain in compression ratio will be minimal. There's the a possibility of using a marginally thinner headgasket, this has been done on a 1.3 GT I know of, but I don't know where the gasket came from (possibly a 1.6 ABU engine)

The GT gearbox goes straight on an ABD engine, just make sure you use the flywheel off the GT as well.

To get the compression up you need to deck the block. You then need to machine the valve pockets in the pistons, assuming there's enough material to allow this. You also need a vernier pulley as the distance between the crank and cam pulley is now less so the timing marks are out. You could of course spend £400+ on some custom pistons and go oversize at the same time or fit the GT rods and pistons.

a couple of questions

can you use NZ bits in place of GT bits???

can a metal head gasket from PSD be used to raise the compression a little???

Thanks, Paul

can you use NZ bits in place of GT bits???

yes but it may not be quite as powerful.

not on the ABD but possibly on the ABU

Thanks Gaz

going to try and get the GT bits i need, but at least i can use the NZ bit if i need to

i already have all the NZ bit i need

shame i can't use that metal head gasket and raise the compression a bit :(

so why not use the 1.6 inlet and exhaust when you fit the 1.6 engine? what about the 1.6 16V engines?

Steve

the downpipe is different on the 1.6 engine, and they vary alot depending on what car the 1.6 is out of.

1.6 inlet is only a single bore spi jobber, no good for a carb or a deecent sized throttle body. Later ones are plastic too which are even less moddable.

16v inlet and exhaust manifolds are totally different to the 8v.

christmas came early at my house!!

my polo cl/gt is now an AEE!

piper 285 cam and thats all he'll tell me!

that why my gt engine (piper cam, polished and ported) is now for sale

is all this really worth the small amount of gains? it just seems a lot of work for not much power?

oh yes. its only been finished 24 hours!

power is much much better than gt.

i thought it was only going for a new cam but its come back 3 times faster haha

it really is worth doing :-) well we all think so :-)

ema xxx

Big improvement in torque though. Steve's 1.6 had as much torque as a standard g40. A well modded one will get similar power figures to one to.

i cant believe how much faster it is. torque steer is amazing, you really have to hold on haha

hopefully ill get some good power out of it at the rr day in jan.

got run it in abit or should i say get use to it. driving along at 60ish in 3rd, put your foot down and i spins the wheels haha

think i best order some tyres, don think these will last very long now haha

what was it like to do the aee conversion then ema? an was there any custom manufactured parts. think a full blown list of parts used could come in handy here. sounds like fun lol

  • 3 months later...

bump.

interested in bits needed for the AEE conversion...

JB

I would try and get an AEA or ABU if I were you. The AEE block is a bit different to a polo one. Whereas an ABU is the same apart from being a bit taller and not having the third bolt for the engine mount.

the biggest problem with GT injection on a 1.6 is the manifold. You need to cut and shut a 1.6 spi manifold and a GT inlet because the stud pattern for the inlet on the 1.6 head is different. I'm getting around this by using an early head, which can also be used with GT injection with the right distributor. (one from a GK engine) Might look a bit odd in a mk3 though.

Is there any easy way of identifying an abd engine? Finding the engine code aint all that easy as i found out last time i went to my local yard, incidently where is the engine code on an abd
