Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

Featured Replies

how much does the larger 1.6 block affect the handling?

Its probably similar to a g40 engine in weight so handling is fine, feels the same as a normal 1.3 tbh

  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

The 1.6 AEE is six kilogrammes heavier than the 1.4 ABD,at 89kgs and 83kgs respectively.

With what attatched? Surely the block/head isn't as heavy as that, I deadlifted mine from the floor and I aint exactly massive.

^^ Included 1.4 clutch and flywheel, did not include manifold.

And i carried mine across two gardens - despite weighing 9 stones. Not advised, though.

IS THE CLUTCH ON THE abd any better than a GT one or are they the same . as will be buying an ABD complete engine soon. so only worth changing the head if the GT head has double valve springs and the ABd dont. oh currently running stock GT at the moment.

is that the only difference between the GT and ABD heads is the cam and valve springs? same size ports etc.

And later ones need to change the flywheel as is different to polo Gt one yes. nothing else need to change no?

I think both clutches are 190mm, but GT is in theory better. A 200mm clutch is not much more expensive.

Heads ports are the same

Whats the BHP of the mk3 golf ABD is it same as stock GT 75 BHP?

will there be much difference in fuel comsumption between the 2? its not much bigger engine in cc

should hopefully still see around the 40mpg mark you think with 268/268 cam poloace 8K chip G40 manifold and decat. thats the mods i will be running

fuel difference will be tiny, theres not a massive difference between mine and a standard GT

We lifted one (minus gearbox) into the bay by hand, really is no need for a crane!

ABD is 60bhp standard but it is heavily restricted by the standard intake and fuel system. Once GT parts are fitted, power compared to a GT is slightly improved, while torque is considerably improved.

Well thats a hell of a lot to take in LOL but i think that a 1.4 in my little Polo sounds like grate fun, i was just going to play with my 1.3 but i think that I've talked my self into it now, just a quicky tho i have a mk2 s coupe would it be ok to use the head i have or would it be better if i got my self a gt head??

Would you be keeping the carb setup from the mk2? The mk2 head has the fuel pump on it so might be worth keeping for that. The GT head has double valve springs, not sure the mk2 head will have (but worth a check!) The mk2 cam isn't as good as the GT cam either

..or the ABD cam, which is a bit lumpier than the MH/2F. Mechanical pump is favorable over electric though, really.

The ABD cam is the same as the 1.3 SPI cam, there's really not much difference, if any, between the MH/2G cam and the AAV/ABD one, I'm pretty sure the only difference is the omission of the fuel pump drive lobe on the latter

the lift is identical, i measured with a clock gauge when deciding which one to have reprofiled. Work is going to start on my car on christmas eve when i get home. bout time too.

Well I've got me a set of bike carbs to put on it that has been set up by Bogg bro's and i also have the GT cam but was thinking of getting my self mabe a slightly more aggressive one but not to shore yet, i was going to get my head ported to within a inch of its life but if the GT head is better i might as well get me one of them and play with that one instead, as for the fueling as i will be running bike carbs i have already got my self the matching pump and ran all of the wiring ready to take it, what do you think???? ow was also thinking that if i was going to be fitting the 1.4 ABD then i would fit a balanced fly wheel as well :-D

the GT head and ABD head are the same.

is this the engine i need????

in a m-reg mk3 golf 1.4

thats it, if you want to be overly doubly sure the engine code is written on the block between the top of the gearbox and thermo housing. dont be put off by how rank it looks, mine looked like that, but now looks like this!

couldnt resist, sorry

That's definately an ABD. The telltale signs are:

Alternator cradle is flush with top of cylinder block

Cambelt cover has flat top

ok thaks.yeh my mk1 jetta engine had a bit of a rebuild make over

before

and after many hours cleaning and painted carfully

only useful information i can add when converting from a 2G engine is, the water pipe that runs along the back is different, so is the thermostat housing. keep the ABD one, and fit the 2G thermostat housing. there is only one water pipe that needs changing and thats the one with the outlet for the waterheated auto choke from the dreaded pierburg. the ABD water pipe doesnt have any of the outlets so use these pipes as necessary, and the pipe from the header tank will need shortening slightly.

you will need an M10x1.5 tap to clean out the 3rd engine mount on the front and a Mk3 polo alternator pulley+belt as these are a little larger than the Mk2 items which dont come as close to the timing marks.

hi there I'm a bit confused, my polo is the 1 litre spi,I'm wanting a 1.6 but obviously need gt stuff and is this the easiest way just getting an adapter made for the inlet to the head? cheers

Best way is to weld the end of the ABU inlet to the GT inlet. The bolt holes are too close for an adapter.

Probably covered here somewhere, but, 268/268 into an ABU/AEE? Would it be ok? I know the marks don't like up!
