Converting a GT to a 1.4 (and 1.6)

Featured Replies

It fits, but needs a vernier to time up right. It's also unproven (i think, but PPP were selling them for it?) in the aee - the lift is lower, but the duration way longer. Once i can get a vernier i'll try it out and post my views. I had it in and timed up as close possible - it definately pulled higher up the revs, but used more fuel (could have been as i was "testing" it).

  • Early MK3 Golf 1.4 as well. Can't remember the code though. Gaz will be along soon to tell you all about it as he has one.

  • Its a compeletely different kettle of fish. I wouldve mentioned it but I was hoping I wouldnt have to. The 1.6 engines are less compatible, the ABU is the best one of the series to use, (bares most

  • Yeah, one of the best i saw was a basic MK2 breadvan - hiding a 1.6 16v Lupo GTi engine, complete with 6-speed box. It even had the star type steel wheels,as max sleeperage was the order of the day.

^ yeah as long as its timed up properly.

What do you think it would cost to pay someone to convert a 1.0L mk2 4-speed to a GT engine with 5-speed box? Let's say I picked up a GT for cheap would I have everything I needed for the swap? I'd definately want GT clocks as the 1.0L clocks have no rev counter :D

H

P.S. I'm on the south coast in chichester near portsmouth if anyone knows anyone who would do this conversion for me?

Just have a go yourself, its all covered on here what to do, plus If you get stuck ask questions! Buy a 100quid shitter/take a week off work if your worried about time.

I've got absolutely no mechanical experience whatsoever! The most I've done is replace a fuel filter and paint my rocker cover :D

I had little more experience that wheel bearings, and oil changes when I changed the engine in my GT, give it a go.

would the head off a gt fit the abd bottom end and could you use the gt pistons in the block

thanks zack

You can use the gt head on the ABD (that is what 50% of this topic is about!)

No, the 3f pistons will not work in the ABD block...

ok just baught my 1.6aee for my mk2 polo breadvan

I'm going to be running carbs so no need for injection crap lol

i am aware there isnt a bolt hole for the engine mount and have a solution and believe there is a issue with the started motor..

what box should i use?? can i use my standard abd 5 speed box and fit my 1.0 flywheel and starter?? and remove the adapter ring for the aee box?

is therr any other issues?

cheers

max

If you have it all out the car, make sure the starter you want to use first fits at the back of the block properly. Being a 1.0 mk2 it should do, and fit fine with the flywheel and gearbox.

You have to remove the adaptor plate if it has one, held on with 4 (iirc) 10mm allen bolts.

You may need some water pipes off the AEE aswell, the rad ones.

It made better torque with the 4-branch but top end power was the same. The engine really needs some headwork to live up to it's full potential.

GT pistons dont fit. :(

For what reasons dont the GT pistons fit? the bore is the same only difference i can think is the crown height of the pistons, and it would be a good idea would be to try the 1.3 spi (AAV) pistons because they have slighty lower crowns than the GT, that is why the 1.3 spi has a 0.5 lower compression ratio than the GT.

All right there all just wondering if any one knows haw hard it would be to fit a 1.4 16v lump into a old mk2 polo coupe ?????? just thought that it would make it a right little rocket =]

pin size is different, so you can't use the 1.4 rods with GT pistons and GT rods + pistons will be too long for the throw of the crank.

1) Same engine mount problem as any other 6n engine.

2) Cambelt is wider,so you have to use the wider bottom end sprocket. You cant bolt the narrow V belt pulley to this,so you need to change the pulley on the alternator and align it.

3) No personal experience of fitting the standard injection ECU and fuel system, but it should fit in the space available - though you may not be able to shut the bonnet.

4) Easily connects to a standard G40 exhaust with a welder if you cut the downpipe just before the catalyst.

5) If you put the rods and pistons in a 1.6 8v AEE engine, you'll have a 1.6 16v version. But you'll need to find a cambelt three teeth longer and you wont be able to shut the bonnet.

Other than that it all fits sweet.

So hold on is it much diferent engine mount wise as the 1.4 ABD engine then as I've been told and seen alot written about fitting this engine and is said that it would fit strate in, isnt that a 6N engine? so wouldnt it make sence for VW to make the engine mounts the same on the 1.4 16v engine, i was going to put the 16v engine on bike carbs that i have all ready, if the two engines do differ what sorta work would i have to do to fit the 16v engine i have in a R reg polo and fit it into my F reg polo coupe?????

the ABD isnt a 6n engine for starters, thats the AEX, the ABD came from mk3 golfs and ibizas. the ABD is identical in terms of engine mounts to the 86c polo engines.

the AFH (16v) has no third bolt hole, just list the AEE so you need to make a plate, an 085 gearbox can be bolted to it, then its up to you to sort ignition and fuelling, most common is to use MH/2G ignition and bikecarbs (max crox, HEG123 and matthew)

then as mikey explained above about exhaust and cambelt.

Sorry my bad about the ABD engine being from a 6n, sooooo i would have to sort the ignition (dizzy from a mk2/3?) put in a electic fuel pump and fit wiring, chainge the pully for the cambelt, will i have to do that even tho i will be using the intire AFH engine, is there clearence problems ? then sort out some Carbs for it, all ready have some tuned CBR1000 carbs that would do the trick and then sort out some sorta plate for the engine mount, would any one hve any sorta dimensions that i could have PLEASSSEEEEE :? is there any thing else that i would need to know to do this, sorry for being so dump but really sleepy :? Thanks all :)

Have read this thread with great interest and i am currently working on a vw polo Fox coupe. Hopefully i will have an ABD engine in the next month or so. Just a couple of questions. the car itself is a 4 speed. when changing the engine over what clutch and gearbox will work? i know that the engine drops straight in. but I'm just wondering do i need to have a different loom. is the ecu diff? can the flywheel from a 1300 engine go on? is it worth it?

apologies for the splurge of questions.

no diff loom, no diff ecu and the flywheel will be reet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Are you sure the wiring looms are different. As i have checked all the wires and plugs

on my mk3 polo and it looks compatable with the mk3 golf ABD engine.

Cheers Mark

  • 3 weeks later...

You can use the polo wiring loom on a standard ABD engine and injection system. You just can't use the wiring loom from the golf in a polo as certain compoents are in different places. (ecu, coil, battery, etc) so wires will be the wrong length. When converting from a 1.05 SPI to 1.4 SPI you will need to change the ECU, you might get away with using the 1.3 ECU but the 1.4 ECU (or at very least the chip from it) would be preferable.

So to clarify. The ECU will need to be changed, would the ECU from the 1.4 golf work or does it hve to be a 1.3 polo ecu or a gt ecu work. Is it a very big job. or is it just a matter of replacing the 1.0 spi with the 1.4 spi ECU. as i dont hve a very big budget to work with, and not much electrical know how. A question about the engine. the polo fox i have is a four speed, the ABD is a five speed. will it fit it cos i might be able to get a ABD from a golf. But the gearbox is screwed. So what I'm wondering is do i need a 5 speed polo gearbox??? and finally the exhaust manifold. Gt or abd?? or a modified one??

Thanks in advance

polo-junkie

The exhaust manifold is the same on everything from the 1.05 to the 1.4 except the G40, the 4-speed will fit the abd. The golf ECU may fit the standard polo plug but it may not. If it doesn't you will need to dismantle the ECU to get the chip out of it and put this chip in the 1.0 ECU. If you can't find a 1.4 ECU a 1.3 AAV engine (not 3F or NZ as these are very different ECUs) ECU is your next best shot

Just thought id add a pic of a 6n 8v engine in a typical donor vehicle (this being a nice low mileage 1.6 AEE run-out example, with little mirrors and metal-grille fog lamps etc, crashed by the grandson)..

..and fitted into a MK2 (looking dusty after a respray, and fitted with bike carbs)..

Frontinworkshop-001.jpg

..then cleaned up. Note expansion tank's breather pipe now goes to thermostat housing in lieu of a MK2 radiator set-up.

When fitting a post-'90 engine in a pre-'90 car you loose the mechanical fuel pump,as said earlier in the topic.

Not only will you need an electric pump, but the power must be cut automatically in the event of you stacking it.

Here's my Facet pump and Ford 8v EFi knock switch..
