All halfords stuff, gray primer, satin silver paint. rattle cans, thx lol

My log book says the colour is satin silver, but theres a blue tint to the paint, I know my car has been resprayed b4, I think they may have done it diamond silver, does that have a blueish tint to it?

You need to watch that, my insurance company refused to fix my car because the previose owner had done a respray that didnt match the log book. They gave me the cost of it to get it done myself, but they wouldnt touch it.

good diy job though. I did the same thing with mine, it didnt look as good as that when done, mainly because i was unwittingly using the wrong colour.

the pictures make it look good , but when you see it, you can tell the differance. I mean what could I expect from a Can? lol

My car ain't even on the road yet. when it is. I'm going to get it sprayed and matched up, this is just temp and just me getting board at the weekends lol

Anyone got any idea how much it would cost to get 4 smallish dents filled and then front and back bumpers sprayed as well as the sides of the car sprayed to get rid of the crappy spray can job?

depends on the bodyshop, just give a few a ring and get some quotes, be sure to have look at some of therir work beofre you take your car there.

The thing you've gotta remember about bodyshops & painting, is that it IS expensive for a good job. If joe bloggs in his backstreet garages charges you £70 to repaint your bumpers and both sides of the car, it's not going to be a good finish.

The expression 'you get what you pay for' comes into a lot of subjects, painting and bodywork is definatly one of them.

I recently did the sill on mine, got snagged on a rock when my mum was driving it.

Just needs a few more bits sorting and it can go off for paint. :)

another dent on the off side front door panel, luckly next to some bubbling paint and rust, so got rid of that as well.

I don't think the halfords paint is up to the standard I want...

I might buy a compressor and start doing real spraying or wait untill I get it on the road (end of april) and take it to a body shop just to have the rear quaters and doors sprayed?

Any Idea how much it will cost?

How did you blend the paint into the car from that point? I'm having a problem with my own car and trying to blend it in. No matter how much I try I still get the smallest edge of paint when I remove masking.

Any tips? Will it blend when polishing? Or should I try on a larger area?

well if you have a edge, the paints are hights, are will need to sand it down and probally respray .

Now I'm not happy with my spray job at all, halfords colour match is terriable. I'm going to go to a place called euro colour to get it mixed propally...or get a compressor and do it propally.

Thought so. i'm going to have to sand it down and respray it again and this time leave the paint on a bit longer before applying clearcoat, otherwise it comes out a fair bit darker and it just doesn't blend.

Just a update , filled and primered the passenger side door, well part of it. Only primered it for now just to stop it from rusting from rain.

Ok so I have put the colour on now, but no clear cote yet. Got the paint off ebay this time mixed by Hycote, much better then halfords crap, so I will be re doing that rear quarter I did with halfords paint.

I've just bought some Volkswagen Black by Hycote off Ebay and only cost me about £4

I got 4 cans of satin silver for £18 including postage.

You only learn by doing, so good on you. Find someone who is good with bodywork and pick there brain a bit.

Hey mate I'm sorting my arches soon so just wondering about how many coats of everything you used to get it as good possible for the last few I've already sprayed a bit of my bumper just need help with panels.

Well when I read about how to spray and watch learn how to spray dvd's they all say the same thing, and even on the cans they say use 3 coats of primer, colour and clear. But I have never taken alot of notice to how meny coats I do. I do just enough coats but not too much, you need to know when to stop and where to spray if the coats are too thin. I find if i follow the steps of 3 coats of each I find the coats are too heavy and sometimes run. Buy an old bumper and practice on it .

The only way to do it at home with spray cans is to peel the masking tape back between each coat of paint to reduce the sharp edge were the masking tape is.

To do this you will need several lines of tape (or very wide masking tape) before you go to news paper. Do the first coat as normal, when you come back to do the 2nd coat lift the edge of the tape all around the area you are spraying so a bit of the 2nd coat covers the edge left by the 1st coat. That way the area you spray gets a little larger each time but the edge is less defined when you have finished. Also I found using the spray can handles you can buy at Helfrauds helps get a better application.

lol, almost replied to my old post.

Yeah I abandonded painting very small areas masked off. I just took a larger area to paint and it worked out somewhat. I'm still waiting for proper weather to redo it and for my car to stop being a complete bitch. There's another technique for feathering it in using a piece of cardboard and a hole cut out in roughly the same shape and size as the patch you're painting and then hold it some 10cms away from the spot and paint over the cardboard. Supposedly this feathers in the paint. Haven't tried it out yet.

looks like you've come a long way from your 1st post on this thread! only thing i will say though is that primer is porous, so wont protect against rain, so its always best to paint over it, even if you have to flat it back again to get a suitable finish.

Ok so since I have had the car there has been a bit of flaked and cracked paint on the passanger side front bumper, So I decited to sort it out today.

Just got a new camera so I though you might like to see how it went.
