My mate is thinking about putting 17's on his 6n and wants to know whats the lowest he can go on lowering springs?

Depending on tyre profile i would say between 30 and 50 mm

With this tyre profile 205/40/17

tell him not to get 17s... when they are on a small car they look shit IN MY OPINION, the rubber round them looks like a band if you are trying to keep original rolling diamter and if not, they will be dtrimental to handling.

He will have issues if he goes much lower than 40mm on that width and size of tyre.

17s are too big for a 6n.

15's are optimum, get decent brakes under there... good range of tyre available not to mention the most important part of changing rims... the handling will be best!

Tell him go 15s as they give good balance of speed and handling. Also, sooooo many more rim choices in 15s

Tell him to put 185/35-17 on his 17s. Than the wheel will have the rigth size :) I have 17s with them and about 10cm lowering without any scrubbing what so ever

Would them tyres be able to fit a 205/17 Rim?

185/35/17 are for a 7.5 width max but I have known people to fit them to 8.5j rims. This size tyre sits 1mm smaller than a 195/45/15 so you should get some good lowerage if you use that size tyre

widest that is legal is 7j rim, but 7.5j is nå problem :) 8.5j is wide!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had 17s on my mk4 with 50mm springs and shocks,,it did rub on full lock at the front but no massive issues tbh,,if you had a lot of weight in it the rears caught occasionally but again this wasnt a big problem as i rarely carry anything in my car. As for the handling, mine has never handled as well as when it had 17s/springs and shocks. I've had various wheels/tyres and now have coilovers and none them touch what i had originally so providing you can get it sat right and dont choose any hideous wheels then id for it..

also i had falken ZE512 205/40/17's which quite a sloped tyre wall on them which helped reduce any scrubbage issues.

okay, re-phrase... 17's on a car they are too big for is for chavs... if you turned up at the strip or track day with you massive puff daddy rims and rubber band tyres you would get laughed at and called a chav? just my two cents?

Wasn't there a lupo on 17 inch works wheels in last months pvw?? 17s are hardly chav mate.. Just need 2 be in keeping with the look you're after!

Sorry stambo, but not my cup of tea? rims look to big, and the exhausts.... but each to their own, if you like it, you do it!

17s can look good, i love the examples above (altho not too sure about the exhaust...personally) but its got to be done right.

If you stick the biggest wheels you can lay your hands on and they dont suit the car, its a fail.

Sounds like a slight exaggeration.... mine scrubbed on 15" solitudes when i was 10cm down, actually, it rubbed when i was 6cm down!

Think what you want to, but mine does not scrub... the wheelsize is not everything, the suspension type and setup, and how stiff it is matters.. I scrubbed on 16s with 40mm springs, but not 100mm down on badass-stiff coilovers and 17s. :)

Tell me, what suspension do you have, and what is the width and ET of the 15s? and tyresize? You can just come and test my car if you want!
