really? do you have any pictures of it by any chance? cos i have very minimal clearance, already scraped it a couple times going down a pretty much flat road!

here's a crappy phone picture:

DSC00517.jpg

the ground isn't level there and the bump to the left looks bigger than it actually is, i'll get a better picture tomorrow on flat ground. but that 2p won't fit under the lowest parts of it, surely it can be raised somehow? or is it better off on a track car

couple better pictures on flat ground here, i have approximately an inch and a half clearance from the lowest point.

does anybody have any suggestions? cos it'll be coming off again in the next few days else

i can knock the brace up a tiny bit more as the hole the bolts go through are like a slanted oval, and the bolts are at the top if it, not the bottom. so another 10-15mm clearance is possible i think. have to see how it goes from there and decide what to do!

blimey son u sure you are not 80mm drop lol that is about how low my one looked, is that the cheap front set of ebay?

  • Author

nah it's definately just down 60mm, it's the full set off venom, FK ones. did yours have that much of a gap above it?

Bin it mate, there crap lol.

You may have better handling, just you wont be able to drive fast because ull be too scared of hitting small stones n stuff

I really dont get why they designed um like this, its further from the exhaust than it is the floor.

  • Author

tbh i haven't even noticed much of a difference since its been on. but then again, like you say, i've been scared incase i hit a hidden bump in the road!

shouldn't have bothered with it then, ah well, it'd be fine for a track car. they should do some redesigning because its ridiculous! i thought maybe something could be done to close the gap above it but nah, it was just a waste of money

mine were abit better than that but yeah take the bottem one off mayte

Strut brace problem solved, said hi to a bump in the middle of quite a steeply cambered road, in the dark, and instead of having a huge space between the exhaust its now practically touching it  close enough so it makes a horrible vibrating sound at low revs when starting the car up but ah well, i can deal with that!

My californian show plate turned up too, so that'll be a window or roof rack accessory for shows over the summer!

pictures!

Brief list of things to do in the near future:

- Fit upper strut brace

- Sort out the black eye  (new headlight and panel)

- Get some better condition bumpers and remove the tow bar

- Fit the Mk4 rocker cover

- Mod the backbox for a slightly bigger exit (dont want much noise as there's nothing to back it up with haha!)

Probably get a bit of de-stickering on the go aswell tbh...

Haven't been posting much on here recently, i've got slack and become a lurker haha, dug this thread out and thought it could do with a bit of an update though!

So with reference to my "To do" list up there ^^ not a great deal has been done.

I wasn't in too much of a hurry to do anything as i was happy with how the car looked, only thing i did for a while was get a second hand bumper and remove the towbar. Then the tread on my tyres got too low and i couldn't afford to buy a new set, so i borrowed my dads wheels off the valver whilst it was off the road, drove down to the VW Jamboree for the weekend:

We only made it one lap around the field with somebody in the back before security said they're kicking people out for doing stuff like that this year, bit harsh i thought seeing as i probably didn't go faster than about 5mph! ah well, was good while it lasted.

After that my dad got the valver back on the road so i had to give him his wheels back, so bought a new tyre for one of my standard steels, 3 of them already had decent tyres on them so put them on to run around on over winter.

Then came along the scrotes who find vandalising cars fun for some f*cked up reason. Came out of my mates house to find my windscreen looking like this:

DSC_0266.jpg

Was shot with an air rifle, don't have any pictures of the cars parked infront of mine, but one was a brand new clio with 16 shots like mine in the window, the other was an older fiesta whos windscreen had just been stamped through. Police eventually arrested someone for a different offence, who lived next to where all the cars were damaged and they seized an air powered hand gun at the same time so he seemed a likely culprit. He got sent down for burglary and fire arms offences which is good news!

Bad news is i still haven't managed to get it fixed cos money's tight atm, started work again last week though so will hopefully be sorted soon.

I polished up the mk4 rocker cover but still need to get a gasket to fit it, and i sold the upper strut brace as i couldnt be bothered with it, the others had already caused enough hassle haha.

The cars had new brake cylinders and shoes both sides at the rear. I hacked up some Mk4 golf trims and fitted them to my 13's:

bayshot1.jpg

I think it looks pretty good, i've taken them off again now though as they were a bit wobbly, gonna spray them black and fit them more securely with cable ties so they dont wobble about.

Final thing, today i sprayed the front panel black to disguise the dent on the left hand side a bit, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

So this is how its looking at the moment:

DSC_0500copy.jpg

Not a lot of plans for this now, just going to have a bit of fun with it whilst i save for a new car!

- Spray and fit the wheel trims.

- New windscreen.

- Headlight.

- Cherry bomb! for shits n gigs, i have an old back box it can be welded too so i don't have to ruin the one on it now.

I think i covered the main things.. close rant!

I've seen a couple videos on youtube of people with them, it seems alright for the price, and the tailpipe doesn't seem to big overly big and chavvy! Did you get one of the ones you see all over ebay?

cars looking cool Corey! shame about the smashes in the front windscreen, did that happen in Plymouth? keep up the good work

  • Author

thanks mate, yeah in greenbank, one of the usual areas for this sorta thing unfortunately :(

got a new screen being fitted tomorrow though, they had a choice of 3 aswell so hopefully I'm gonna be able to get one with a blueish top tint, which'll be nice!

Dunno how you weren't pulled for that  your car was looking as though you had returned from a drive through the ghetto though!

Hope the new screen didn't cost too much? the prick who got caught shoulda got made to pay for it!

I'm illusive mate, haha. nah i've been lucky really, about times its sorted though, driving up to bristol next weekend and i dont fancy it going pop at 70

£75 so its not too bad. yeah i know :/ but they couldn't prove it was him that did it so there was no way of getting any money out of them, he got put away for other things.

Sorted the new windscreen through insurance, £75 window excess. Asked for one with the top tint rather than a complete slight tint, i think it looks a bit smarter. Also one of the bits that are soldered to the heated rear screen had come off so i asked about that when they came to fit the new screen. He said its all covered under the excess, so came back the next day and fitted a new rear screen too! even managed to swap the clubpolo and devondubshack stickers aswell somehow (even if they are put back on the wrong sides lol).

So 2 new screens for £75 fitted, I'm pretty happy with :D

I think thats all the niggling little problems sorted, did 250 mile round trip to bristol and back with no problems on the weekend so hopefully hes good to go for a while now. i have 10 miles to go before it reaches 140k :p

New screens are looking good corey, much cleaner look :p

Also I reckon get a bonnet the same colour on, think it would look sick..however the matte black does look quite cool..

Oh btw will pop around yours next week, finally have munnaaay so will pick up those parts :)

  • Author

haha i haven't got a black bonnet by choice mate, i'd love a blue one.

ah bah no worries just gimme a bell at some point!

nicked a headlight off the GT aswell so my passenger side isnt looking as battered anymore :D

Little update, car passed its MOT this morning :D

Also i have finally decided after many many many ideas, what i'm going to do with the GT. Now that i'm earning averagely ok money i think its time i brought it back to life! so from the end of this month after i've taxed the genesis, majority of my wages are gonna be thrown at the GT, which i'm very excited about! I'll get a build thread up when things start happening, but just thought i'd mention it haha. Anyways heres a few recent snaps of the genesis:

haha cheers for those mate, various polo adventures.

Today i had a half day at work so i thought i'd finally source some bolts to fit the Mk4 rocker cover. After GSF and breakers had failed i had to resort to VW, £13 for 3 bolts :puke: ah well atleast i know they're good quality and its sorted for when i can swap it to the GT.

May take off the bonnet struts and paint them black at some point aswell, they started rusting a couple weeks after they were put on!

DSC_0813.jpg

Yeah mine is off eBay :) but I originally had it on my mini

  • Author

ah fair play, i've scrapped that idea now anyway  funds are being directed elsewhere! may get one in the future though for temporary use til a full stainless is purchased :D

looking good corey :D was good to see you and the car at the jan meet, i like the blue top windscreen, a bit of an oem+ thing.

The two windows for £75 seems a bit of a bargain, i'm buying a new tailgate so i've got a working heated rear window :?
