Buyers rights / Warranty Issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

As some of you may know my Polo died on me (Gearbox). As i needed a car ASAP my dad got me a Renault megane... GAH!

Anyways, Long story short it was fine for about 1 week. Then a few issues started to occurs, Such as it would struggle to start up in the cold / 1st start it'll need a bit of gass for about 10 seconds on the peddle before it'll idle.

And here are a few more faults that have happened within 3 weeks:

1: Problem on starting the engine… Erratic rev range cuts out if not revved for about 10 seconds cold start up

2: Smoke from exhaust

3: Coolant leak – All over engine bay

4: Juddering on idle and in 5th gear

5: Odd sounds on starting engine… Squeal / Screech

6: Exhaust Rattle / Knocking

7: Sloshing sound from passenger compartment when accelerating

I’m no mechanic but after doing some research these faults seem terminal. Possible Head gasket, Coil Pack, Belts, Mounts…

All in all, this car is in need of some major mechanical work to get it running satisfactory again.

Car when juddering can loose all power… With some of these faults, it also seems they’ll create a knock on effect with other components such as catalyst converter may decay due to the coil packs faulty.

Faults prior to these:

Wheel Bearings – Replaced and are now fine

Exhaust Backend, Fell off - Been welded now sounds ok but keeps knocking against body work / chassis

Ok, I've got her booked in tomorrow for the once over (doubt she's even worth saving to be honest).

However, The question: The seller is a guy who does MOT and general mechanical work on cars (Standard garage). He sold it me and he did sell it as trade even with he logbook.

So, By law do i have a x amount of warranty cover with any used car from a trade seller?

I'd be very grateful for any information. Sorry, The post was a bit long winded after all.

- Liam
