Information required urgently...

Ok, this has been asked a million times before, so I'll say it now that I know the laws, or the rough laws, as it's a grey area, on wheels protruding the arch.

The way I see it is:

As long as it's a road going car, the wheel is allowed to stick out from the arch as long as the tread of the tyre is under said arch and the tyre does not foul the body of the car.

The reason the misconception of this law is brought up so often is due to the SVA test for hotrod's and kit cars, the wheels of which are NOT allowed to protrude the bodywork of the vehicle in wet weather.

I've heard of the "30mm law" whereby the wheel is only allowed to stick out of the arch by 30mm maximum.

So anyway, my tread is under my arch, my wheel doesn't poke more than 30mm...therefore it is legal. However, I had a traffic officer as I got pulled in to an insurance and tax checkpoint and he was insistent that my wheels were illegal. He mentioned that they weren't allowed to poke out whatsoever, he also noted that my arch was touching my wheel slightly and fair play for that.

I need a document of legislation stating the rule whereby it is a pass on the fact that the wheel protrudes the arch, simply so I can show it when called for.
