and soldering iron is not a plastic welder and does not do the same thing to join parts together in the same way

you should have got a real plastic weld tool and done it properly and then skim with minor filler not fibreglass

Fair point here but where can you back this up? How can too much fibreglass cuase cracking? The reason it would crack is either i crashed or two started twisting the bugger? Seeing as i plan to do either i suppose it won't crack.

Please could you find me this real plastic weld tool i would love to see it and it's very technical name.

Please if you don't have ANYTHING constructive to say please kindly stay out of the thread.

P.S Properly would be constructing a mould and using CAD technoligy to construct a bumper that is specifically designed to have only three grill slots.

Is the plastic welding absolutly necessary with the two small grills?

I've just done one with fibreglass and then filler and it seems fine?

Will it just come away when I put the bumper on and I'm driving on a bumpy road for example?

it wont crack i did it on my rover 25 over 2 year ago, its got the stiffest suspension ever and thers loads of speed bumps where a live and its still as good as ever, the only thing i did differently was a used hairy catty aswel.

Thanks Dude :) Any plastic will do buddy, providing it's at least say 2-3mm thick. The number plate recess is just the top half wich curves sligthly which is easier to get the shape.

Okay, noobie question but where did you get the plastic trim from? that confused me. sorry for the silly question but i want to do this

I've done my bumper also but smoothed the numberplate i dno how I'm going to get a perfect line where the numberplate was :S

Great lil guide here mate, I'm looking to get my 6ns plate recess smoothed out, on my old 6n we just used bodyfiller, done the job fine too, but i reckon this one I'm gonna try and see if i can get it plastic welded as theres a crack there to sort out too :(.

Do you guys smooth out the bumper just because it looks good or do you do it for better aero dynamics.

its a fucking soldering iron ffs , people like this give a bad name to skilled fabricators who can repair plastic , in welding u must have a foren material to bond the mating surfaces

I'm in the process of doing this and I'm just wondering how much paint was used to, prime, paint and laquer the bumpers? And what kind of paint was it an aerosol or done with a spray gun?

I used an old micra bumper(but most abs plastics would be fine I suppose)and the soldering iron method I also used a blowtorch to melt both bits of plastic then the soldering iron to hold it together It seems To have worked well for me
