Smoking steering wheel and wiper switch replacement

Here's a good'un,

Was driving around last night when behind the steering wheel smoke began coming out. Called out the AA to discover my wiper switch had burnt itself out and now I'm left with only intermittent and no wipers as the stalk seems to have broken or melted behind and wont go any higher (The first time it rains in like 3 weeks?).

How easy is this to sort out yourself? Are the wires just clipped on or does it need soldering? And what are the risks taking it apart? I'm particularly sceptical about the air bag launching itself at me. I know I need to leave the battery disconnected for as long as possible but still seems risky. Can I only order the part through vw? Saw some on ebay but need the part asap so as to get it fixed to get back to uni.
