Torque with bike carbs

.....,but i expect the 1.4 16v to be more progressive and tractable, suiting the little go-kart better - i dont know,I've never ran it.....

It seems to work really well... I would like to see what Heg's one is like as well. I have a GT box in mine which for long journeys can be a bit tiring but it did 500mile round trip sitting at 3-4000rpm fine.

Interesting. I'm thinking 16v now defo, like the sound of a nippy go kart. I'm planing on doing a lot of mile in it, and i'v heard, like max says, that the GT can be a bit tiresome. Anyone suggest a good all-round box, want a bit of acell too?

mikeymk - yea defiantly more economical, even when I put my foot down a fair bit, roughly worked out I got in the high 40's low 50's yesterday. And yes love the sound, beats any rubbish induction kit, can't help putting my foot down now

Wicked. I've been totally sold on the idea. Just the idea of the spund and throttle response is enough for me! I'v been running a 1.3 for a year and before that, a 1.0 for 6! I think this should give me more than enough enjoyment for a good while, once its done. Just as long as i can beat my mates pug 106 gti. I love tht car, would love to destroy it on the road more!

Can anyone suggest any headwork that would be good for the AFH to oax a few more stallions out?

I've got a 1.6 box but with a longer 5th gear ratio. This keeps the 4+E set up,but on a bigger scale - its only at 2,800 rpm at 70mph.

I'm not into out-sprinting other cars,i just like the drive, but its nice to see what it can keep up with.

What do you mean 4+E? Nah, I'm not really. But people give polo's a bad rep and think they're shit (which they are really  ) so i'd like a nice sleeper car. Got a few barry's round my area, be nice to give em a suprise

How did you get the longer 5th gear? That just a standard box?

H&S

The 5-speed box is from a '98 Polo 6k Classic saloon - a 1.6 8v short block 75bhp model.

But fifth gear is a 50/thirty-something ratio, from a box with a lower final drive.

So fourth gear can probably only get me to about 105mph,but fifth would get me to circa 140mph if power/aerodynamics allowed.

Haha! Aerodynamics. in a polo! nice work. So is it good for croozing? or would you suggest a longer 5th? I want pretty good acceleration, but tbh, i want it to be comfortable, and not too revvy on long hauls. The one you have seems quite nice. But didnt you shred the cogs? (just reading through all the bike carb stuff on here!) then again, i would probs be going down the AFH route (dont ask me why, i dont really know! :? )

I cant define a line between box-breakers and not. But the first 1.6 broke two,the second didn't break any. I believe a well-sprung clutch helps reduce fatigue on the gearbox - the Golf 1.9 non-turbo diesel clutch plate with 1.3i pressure plate was in there the second time, when the box held up.

Not sure about post 2005 Polo's,but otherwise, all petrol engines take the 085/8P box. But gearboxes post 1994 have the offside flange too wide, and require the engine shifted 5mm to the nearside to prevent damage to the offside driveshaft.

Right. So i really want a pre-94 box then, to avoid further mods? Not wanting to faff around with that sorta guff!

H&S

Or you can fit a pre-'94 output flange to a post-'94 'box, and there's no engine moving required.

'085' is the transmission series, '8P' is a specific 'box - so anything with an 085 part number cast into the casing will fit (or can be made to fit).

I'm using a GT box on the side of an AFH, with a mk3 flywheel and clutch (although, helix paddle)

@MikeyMK Your 1.6 was producing a lot of torque wasn't it? Shouldn't get as much from an AFH? And that diesel box fit ok did it?

@gofaster how does the GT hold up on long hauls, bit revvy?

I hadn't condidered boxes and clutches to be a big issue, just picking the right one i guess. But as you've done mike, can you swap flywheels, clutches, springs etc. between boxes, and what are the advantages?

The 1.6's tend to have peak torque low in the rev range, around 3000 rpm. The 1.4 will be more progressive in a lighter car, and wont spin the wheels so badly.

Wicked. I'll be stripping the bugger out, so will be as light as possible. Hoping for a bit of nip tbh, bit of fun round the country roads. I dont want to spin the wheels at all if i can help it, tyres arent cheap!

H&S

Well AFH will probably spin the wheels a fair amount when caining it, but i wouldn't have thought as much as the carbd AEE's do in the light mk2/3 polo's.

Yeah, i guess so. I'm hoping to get some hefty rubber on too (about 7" if i can squeeze them into the shonky square arches!)

What do you run/have you run? I'm oooing-abd-eeerring over the standard 1.4 8v (ABD?). But i do want some power. If i went AFH, i probs wouldnt cam it (expense), so would a tuned ABD (cammed basically) stand up to a AFH, assuming all other mods (zorst, bike carbs, P+P etc) where the same? I may skim the head (of which ever i get too). Basically i'm asking can you make an ABD as good as an AFH with only head internal modifications?

long hauls? dunno, i never drive it any distance. it does rev quite high in top though.

And you run the AFH bike Carb conversion? What do you use it for, track days?

he uses it in his mk3 rally car as far as i am aware, which you can see in his avatar pic.

Aha, thats it is it. How do you find yours? I have been reading a lot of the old post, and am just about where you were starting. Your running an AHF too right?

no bike carbs here, twin 45s.

I didn't use a diesel box.

I had the diesel clutch disc anyway, and it was very similar to a G40/16v clutch disc. Couldn't use the diesel pressure plate as its a different design so i just used the 1.3i Polo one i was already using.

All held up well enough for me.

Theoretically,if the springs in the clutch disc aren't butch enough for the engine, they'll bottom-out under load - and the way i see it,this causes the 'impact' at that time to be placed on the gearbox's input shaft. This could be where i was breaking gearboxes before,as i was using a 1.3i clutch disc.

So i'll now continue to use higher-torque clutch discs.

Oh, right. Sorry to offend!

How do you find the twin 45s? What engine are they on?

H&S

Twin 45's are carb's made by weber or dellorto. Just like 40's, but for bigger choke sizes. So not usually needed for smaller engines unless a lot of revs are going to be had.

Ok, i see. a standard 1.4 16V pressure plate would cope wouldnt it? The bike carbs wont produce that much extra torque would they? In fact, the whole standard 1.4 16v set up would cope aye

H&S

Hopefully,yes.
