yes , confirms your theory :-D , there are 3 known golfs with them fitted  , vw panel though , apparently sold in countries with harsher road conditions , South Africa being one

So what have you actually done there? Welded in a section of steel?

No I believe its plywood max

I was more interested in its size and geometry, not material

I've just braced what i removed. its a stitched in piece of 20mmx250ish mm and its 4mm thick. the results speak for themselves - no flex between the piece i removed

very interesting indeed.

so will you have to brace the other side now, to keep the car drivable?

  • Author

i did rhe exact same thing on the other side- so it has been fixed in the same way. it was only an issue because of the way i supported the car whilst i did some work. the passenger side was uneffected and i was able to fit the removed piece (+ cutting blade gap) back how it was- the drivers side had a 1mm difference and i then realised i could flex the whole leg up and down until i welded the piece back in- the strengthening plate is more to add peace of mind about the chassis leg flexing under load - esspecially seeing as its a Turbo G40

Lol , i was reading a thread over on clubgti today , seems VW offered a similar kit for the MK1 Golf back in the day ..

Fountain of knowledge as per usual mark, may have to do some thing along these lines myself when I swap my wings

VW blates designed those with mad max in mind, they look like they should be for guns

teaser

i think whats prompted me to do this is how others are catching up, i think this will put a full stop on my engine bay now. il post more up as she gets finished next week.

haven't decided what colour yet - was just gunna open a swatch and randomly stop and hope it wasnt pink

Hmmm don't know if I like the look of that, but I suppose it is still covered in filler.

  • Author

thats just a skim, will be virtually filler free once its flat. and its all metal;-)

Been inspecting this today, looking good Kiz 8-)

i now want a mk3 just for a set of those rear lights. lol where they from ?

i bought them off this forum 4 years ago for £25, its one of the most asked questions about the car- and one i know the least about- i dont know who makes them or where to get them from hahahaha

nah, thought it would be to much ober the top. i did seriously consider it however. still got a bit to do before I'm ready- GTI fest is looking unlikely as I've got to get a MOT in and have a good test drive before. I've put some long hours into this recently!

got your coilovers on yet?

Looking good. Looking forward to seeing this new colour

Looks good Kiz- you made the slam panel removable?

  • Author

yer - made it removable, makes it so much easier to work on. plus is made getting the engine out a 30minute job for me and guy. 2 additional bolts on the wing each side, the headlight surround metal was cut and tacked onto the inner wing - and the vertical piece now has a bolt each side next to the headlight.
