Awww mate, hope you've gotten the Polo hype back on. I totally know how you feel. Several times I've thought about jacking mine in for exactly the same reason that I spend all day up the garage and have little to show for it. I spent a good few hours searching for the bonnet lifter the other day, to no avail! I guess its worse for you as you've had it built up once already. But I empathise with the sentiment. I'm not going to patronise you with all the 'you'll regret it' shit and groom your big enough ego ( :lol: ) by telling you how good this car is, because you already know all that. If you want it, keep it up. I can't see you rushing into a decision. And anyway, who will I have a competition with if this gets binned? :lol:

Yeah, that should look nice on my green/blue block! I guessed you had used paint, any more details on the type? I know of some folk who have used 2k, but I'm not sure how that holds up witht the prolonged heat.

Hammerite does the Job Simon. Its what I've used on mine :)

2K can be used, I've never had problems running it on my cam cover.. People have used it on the block before, although i've not so cant comment.

People tell my my cam cover for the AFH will crack and blister, i doubt it but time shall tell.

That engine bay is epic. Just keeps getting better and better!

Should be ok on the rocker, just unsure about the block. I would only use engine paint otherwise, not hammerite. I used por15 on mine before. Good finish, just limited in colours

well , its amazing how much you can actually get done in a short space of time. gone from having no chance to actually being in with a shot.

the thing which was tipping me over the edge was the brakes - I've fitted floor mounted pedal and i failed to think about the reservoirs! - no space at all to fit them.

they have to be the correct distance apart to get your hands round the cap to undo it - but then also have to be far enough back for the pedal to not hit them. first effort

Didnt go well - i dont want them to look rubbish - its not just function with me - its got to look right or i wont bother.

So with space tight i knew i couldnt flare the pipe - made them to long. solution - compression fittings:-) this is the no pressure side so this will be perfect.

Using 1/4" clutch tubing and the fitting i mocked up this setup

it was just the reservoir itself now to deal with. i prefer the large wilwood reservoir to the round girling ones but they only come in this fitting or direct bolt on. enter a cheeky lunchtime machining!

much better! - this allowed me to reduce the hight and give me more options on where this is going whilst supplying all the cylinders

BUT! I'm still not happy - I've obtained another fluid reservoir and will make another adapter to feed a smaller reservoir just for the clutch.

now youve all seen my wheels - very nice:-) but they come in such an offset that means to get them on the car i flared the arches 1" each side and made 14mm adapters to fit them. - this would put me in a big puzzle to get these puppies on

so i set about it with the idea of using a different disc with a high offset on it. the G60 brake discs it was wearing are not very tall and between the mounting face and the face of the disc its about 18mm - with the calipers being so wide id need a lot more space or id need thicker adapters and a flare or the arches again - NO WAY!

enter some new brake discs from a 1987 honda legend - they have 31mm distance - which fits the brake caliper in:-)

Now the discs do need modifying slightly. they come in 4x114 which i no good to me and my 4x100, but they also have 4 other holes - 2 types of disc mounting to the hub - 1 is about 98mm PCD and the other is 104pcd - i am going to bang these on the milling machine tomorrow and put 4 holes where these used to live and to finish off i will just need to bore the centres to 65mm from 64.2

i will start this tomorrow and hopefully have them done saturday ready for me to fit them all over this nice bank holiday were going to have:-)

changed my turbo oil feed - this is a much better way - i have managed to source and adapter to the m10 fitting which give you the hole size of a m12 - thus making the redrilling of the head to fit a better line redundant:-) got a nice bore size hose from head to turbo!

oh and i fitted a new end to it so it bends through the path better than before

il be back at the end of this weekend if not before with photos of the engine finished and all the wiring done (its done already) and a good clean up.

Right - so with a bit of spare time I've actually achieved what i thought would be impossible in the time frame.

Here the modifications to the brake discs -

Centre bore enlarged from 64.2 - to 65mm and also the diameter turned down from 282mm - to 279 ( i wanted the 0.5mm extra clearance - the brackets are for 280mm discs)

I was a bit annoyed that i couldn't find a rotary table to put on the milling machine as these would have saved me ages in clocking the machine up - but hey ho i just got on with it!

i clocked it to the centre bore as this face was just what i machined larger and what the brake locates on. i got it to within 3/4 and 1 thou just because I'm anal.

the next job after clocking it was to zero the bed (the machines compound table)and then i always keep the backlash going in the positive so i get the 4 holes bang on.

on the X axis i moved +50mm and slotted the hole, then -110mm then +10mm and slotted the hole. did the same for the Y axis.

as i was using a slot drill i couldn't go through in one go, this is because the tool isnt designed for it and the swarf cant clear so you end up with the cutter skipping and making a larger hole then required - so i used a smaller diameter tool first to make a swarf path (an engineer reading this will know what I'm on about)

then when through with the full size cutter - perfect!

then did the other disk repeating the process above

NOTE above - the disc came with a countersunk hole for the retaining screw - the machining doesnt take away all of the countersunk bit - i didnt make a cock up!

the setup actually sticks out the back over 2" less than the G60 setup i removed!

Unbelievably these brakes have cost me £200 with £68 being the disks! - what a bargain!

This should open up a whole new level of opportunities to those wanting a brake upgrade on the cheap as you can get different discs with a high offset in 262mm meaning the same operations on those will machine to 256mm and get under 14" wheels!

look at the state of the wheels though hahaha the wheel bolts I've just thrown in from the spares tin - il take some proper photos the next time its out the garage

Yeah brakes need to be accurate, we have a lot of stuff at work for improving things, even torquing wheels up in stages effects the braking ;)
