aye well, I'm not driving it with the waterpump losing that much oil and squeeking like a hamster, its a ticking time-bomb, so ill get one tomorrow and do it thursday evening probably, i want a day off from playing with cars, and i have some walls to paint.

will strip down the afh lump and get pictures of the shattered pieces i picked up out of the bay on saturday haha

Oil coming from your waterpump

You need to stop smoking so much dude hahaha

hahaha legend!

i need to learn to proof read!

Good luck getting all the finishing touches done. What gearbox have you put on this one? :) No fan on the mk4 alternator I see. Does it even need one?

  • Author

i think they all need fans, the fans are within the casing on the mk4 alternators, so i wonder if its a problem thats happened before, hence the need to change the design.

its got a AHD box on it, so its gonna be rev happy but I'm gonna waste alot of time shifting, and its not going to be quiet on long journerys on the motorway.

ordered another new water pump today but cant get to trafford park to pick it up =[

another new water pump *sigh* fitted and all back together again.

batt flattery tho. dreadamon!

pidge is dropping off me battery charger tomorrow and will fire it up in the daytime, should be sweet. tres excited brap brap

woohoo, shes alive. twas a dead starter!

survived the drive to work this morning, was a little tappety after warming up, hopefully its due to the thin oil - 5w40 fully synth, and the fact that the tappets dried out whilst the engine has been sitting for the last couple of months.

fingers cross all is well, but I'm a happy boy to be driving again.

the head looking a little forelorne and stripped of its cams

anyway this lil beasty failed me early last week

DSC02731.jpg

the machined rod for the relay roller, failed and sheered off, leaving me in the same situation as with the previous engine!

on the plus side, the machinist managed to drill out the relay roller using a beast of a milling machine, so its now a M10 threaded bar which i will be replacing with a hi-tensile bolt.

anyway damage seemed minor, drilled out the sheered end of the rod, fitted new relay roller and retensioned everything up, car wouldnt start up, starter motor just whirrs like mad (tried two and tried smacking it with a hammer) and we tested two cylinders, no compression at all, not even a smidge.

floor jacks ftw

stripped it down and she was not a pretty sight, so its game over for that engine, it will be rebuilt and my 2nd lump which has already been cleaned up and honed, is just awaiting piston rings and shells, cams installing and clearances checking and its good to go again!

its alive again, really need to sort an alternator tensioning bracket out tho, or go back to a mk3 alternator (this time with a woodruff key channel put in the mk4 alternator pulley to avoid the same fate as before)

took it for a test drive to bleed the water system and do some asda shopping and then went a 25 min drive, once the alternatays done, itll be back in daily action again

just bought an afh head for 45 quid, and as i have all the spares in the house to build up an afh/arc hybrid and a couple of spare 5-speeds, I'm going to throw that in the peril and drive her until the tax runs out at the end of january, giving me plenty of time to sort out all the niggly bits on the G, and get the rebuilt 1600 with schricks out the workshop for the mk1.

need to enquire about trade insurance too, as I'm up for renewal on the 12th!

long term I'm torn between so many possibilites, i have the parts to build an abd or g40 charged (either turbo or super) and 2 1600 hybrid lumps. i really want to make the peril a reliable daily driver, so i can rely it on all day long for work runs, so its either a low boost setup, or the economy of the 1600 carbed setup no matter what your driving style.

i wanted to avoid the Mk1 going the route of forced induction, because its been done so well before, with the now players owned bronze mk1.

so answers on the postcode. which gets NA, which gets boost? Mk1 or the Mk2.

i miss the peril :( u have to boost it !
