updates on the peril

blew it up a while back playing with an S3, who was playing catchup. still yet to strip the engine down, the charger got stripped the day i got back but all the seals were fine, and I've taken the sump off and it wasnt full of metal shards which means I'm hoping i just popped the headgasket. got a rebuilt block so all it not lost if i have melted a piston !

After getting the peril back onto some wheels and refitting the rear shocks so I could roll the peril around I decided to whip off the head after 6 months off the road ( broke something whilst in front of an s3 at silly speeds )

Slammed rear as there's no springs fitted at the moment, still have to repair the thread on my hnr kit before I can put them back on.

Plan now is to whip the engine out

Split the box

Paint new block ( that's sitting in the boot ) and gearbox black

Fit new oil pump, water pump and toothed pulley to new block

Paint rear water pump

Replace the helix organically lined clutch with a 4 paddle helix I've got

Clean engine bay

Unwrap engine loom and extend some wires so they are a lot cleaner in the bay

Cut out additional sections of the front panel and cross member for better airflow

Mount aquamist kit

Ideally I'd like to give the bay a lick of paint, I'll see if we've got a compressor by then.

Body wise I need to

Strip out all seats and rear carpet

Remove the fibreglass repair on the battery tray we did 2 or 3 years ago and weld up

Redo the welding on the lower rear sill that was patched for the first mot it had in my ownership

Drop the tank, strip back the paint and rust from under the rear floor and axle mounts and check the state of the filler neck panels, repair if ness

Replace breather hose for something rubber with a grommet through the body panel

Zinc etch prime, paint and underseal the floor and all other welded areas

Fit my powder coated gt rear axle, new fuel tank, new in tank lift pump.

Reunderseal front and rear inner arches

Refit lower sill trims

Clean up spots of rust on front panel and edges of wings

Fit new inner door membranes

Only bits I need to buy is a bit of paint and a wideband lambda

Yeah man, dawned on me this week that I hadn't driven it in so long and I loved summer cruising in it!

Will be nice to get this and teggys comet blue on the road at the same time!

Yay for the weekend so more could commence.

Friday saw the interior coming out so I can inspect the floor, remove all the sound deadening and check for rust

Battery tray fibreglass removed exposing a standard rusty polo behaviour

Saturday saw the car stuck up on axle stands, wings, sill trims and arch trims and bumper removed

Handbrake cables, rear axle, rear axle mounts, fuel tank and rear half of exhaust removed

Crispy drivers side rear lower arch

Breather hole in the inner arch

Inside of filler flap

Tomorrow I'll start stripping back all the underseal on the rear floor and cut out all the bad metal.

Shes in fine fettle under all that underseal. The bottom of the A-post, wghere it joins the sill is usually a grot-trap, but she's faired very well there from what I can see. Viva la Peril!

What did you find as the best way to removing all that underseal dude? Gonna be attacking mine soon.

Yeah the lower bit of the sill had a bit of surface rust, and there is a lil bit of rust bubbling by the inner sill/floor join inside the car (the rusty bits i stopped you poking, but generally pretty pleased with the state of it under the underseal. that bit will get cut out too and ill be removing all the bitumen crap off the floor on the inside!

Been using a wire brush on a grinder for the inner wing, although its not hard work, its just time consuming! wire brushes are also very aggressive on the lips of metal and will take metal away if your not careful.

I also had a go with a few different chisels when the metal had warmed up via the wire brushing, so i think ill be buying a heatgun tonight, as hopefully the main top layer will just peel straight off with the chisel, leaving the wire brush just to clean up the remnants.

Going to try white spirits when I've done it all over to see if that can dissolve the last bits of crap left.

I'm not looking forward to doing under the car with a wire brush. I seen this product on the internet - MBX Metal Blaster or Bristle Blaster, looks absolutely amazing for doing underseal and cleaning up steel but its 400 quid! So i'm hoping all of us in the unit can chip in, because itll only be a 1er each.

Regarding products ill be using on the bare metal, I've decided on Rustbuster Epoxy Mastic 121, but cant decide whether to put that straight onto the bare metal, or if I should acid etch prime it with UPol first.

I can find amazing reviews of epoxy mastic, but nothing to state if anyone has used any product on the metal before using epoxy (bar using fe123 rust convertor, to turn any existing rust into iron tannate)

Just a heads up on the etch primer. UPOL is available in a 1 litre reday to use tin that you can run through a spray gun. We've been using it on Dennis to great effect. It's also much better value than the 400ml aerosols as by volume it contains far more etch primer, as a great proportion of the 400ml in the aerosol is taken up by propellants. Iirc we paid circa £13 for this 1 litre tin from a paint supplies place, versus the £18 they were selling the aerosol equivalent at.

Yeah i've had a go before with a wire brush cup on the grinder, what diameter are you using? and is it brass or steel wire?

i ask because the bigger it is, the harder it is to control and your more likely to snag it on something and it pull the grinder out of grasp! Something you definetly don't want to happen when your stripping it all from underneath!

Twisted wire knot cup brush is what i use. last alot longer than them open strand jobbies.

used a twisted wire steel circular brush. think it was around 115mm on a 4.5 inch grinder.

Probably the best way to do it. Definetly wouldn't get under there with a grinder.

I've had one go across my knuckles with a wire brush on before, it fucking kills!

yeah i remember a grinding disc shattering and missing my balls by about 2 inches.
