yeah i remember a grinding disc shattering and missing my balls by about 2 inches.

homemade vasectomy ftl!

and i would get under a car with a grinder, i am a scary bastard

I probably would too, but it would only be with one of them 50mm copper brush cups, fuck the 110mm steel knots scraping my eyelids off!

Friday evenings endevaours started late so ended at 6am, back on it the next day about 1 and we were on the road a few hours later, after some smoke fuelled adventures! some pics before fitting the ra

despite having massive welding gloves, balaclava, safety gogs on, a bit of metal flew off and hit me in the lip! small cut but could have been alot worse. stupid toolstation not having the faceguard in stock!

heatgun and scrapers are real good and getting the top layer of the underseal off, then a bit of wire brushing on the remnants then a quick buzz over with an 80 grit flap wheel.

need to get up in the suspension turrets and remove the oil cooler/ intercooler so i can do the front edges of the panel

How come your stripping the inner arches? Are you planning on painting them?

  • Author

h'obviously!

painted it up with epoxy mastic last night after cleaning up the last few bits

IMG-20120423-WA0000.jpg

quite impressed with the paint, even if i am an absolute spacker. used two measuring spoons, so i didnt mix the two paints, and ended up mixing the spoons!

what a spoon!

tonight i will be cutting more out of my battery tray, yesterday removed a load of the wax and loose bits of metal to find out the extent of the rot.

decided I'm going to paint the front panel too as some bits are annoying me on it now and i need to make some additional holes for airflow.

might drop the engine tonight if i can be bothered!

nice! tis looking tidy! I'm jelous! i want to g40 my mk2 SO BAD but i dont have the knowledge

x2... money burning a hole in my pocket and no decent G knowledge

saf give us your wisdomzzz

Yellow ftw. Love this, one jealous bastard

G40? Surely its not that hard providin you have the necesarry bits. A standard G40 conversion is surely no harder than an AFH on standard injection. Easier as all the plugs/loom are designed for an 86c chassis. Which is no way taking away from your work here Saf. Its all top

its not massively hard to be fair, mk3 conversions are by far the easiest as theres alot of the provisions already in place and the bay is slightly longer.

all the other work required has been covered in this thread, if anyone needs any specifics let me know in the thread and ill help out (please no PM's)

and simon hahaha my works pikeytech through and through!

How much longer is the mk3 Saf?

Tyres arrived today, thanks. The douche of a driver just dumped them on the drive :retard:

dunno mate, ill measure the mk1-3 range at some point this week as weve got the collection!

what a complete beaner!

anyway been a while since I've done anything on the mk2 and i had some paint mixed up from doing the golf, so i got the drivers arch painted up.

and then i got carried away, buzzing after adams toothied g40 buzz into life it made me miss the ol' girl! so i'm on a big push on this at the minute. so inevitably it hard to start at the rotten rear axle mount

stripped off most of the underseal away from the arch and with a varying assortment of wire brushes.

cut away a section of the outer sill that was rotten - the lower part, and then the higher section, in order to allow for better access for a repair.

i need to get something like a dremel to cut some of the rotten metal out from the inner arch, and cut out the rusty breather pipe which I'm going to replace with some flexi pipe and grommet.

any suggestions on a dremely type tool. are they useless for cutting steel in awkward places or would i better off with an air powered jobbie?

Edited by grungeisdead

Id go with the little air 3" grinders , i think dremels would do it but its the disc usage , failing that an air nibbler they are also really good at cutting the replacement shapes .

you can get grinding bits for a drill, used a load to smooth out my inlet manifold

as above a small nibbler are good better for flat panels and a get a 3 inch grinder proper name ( air cut off tool) aldi have got them in think there 8 quid had mine 3 years and its been mint , welcome to grab mine off me to use it needs a disc tho

Good work! I'd also go with a 3" cutting disk on something like an air powered die grinder, way easier than a angle grinder!

cheers boys, picking up an air cut off tool, 40 discs, and an air nibbler with a 5 pack of die and a 5 pack of punches

woop!

You would not believe how many wire stands I pulled out my hair last night. The worst was one that was embedded in my wrist! Caned pulling that one out!

Armed with some new tools I set about cutting out the rot on the inner panel

2012-07-04225548.jpg

And removed the breather pipe, the mess next to it was the mess that came out the middle of it! I need to cut open my fuel filter to see what was picked up in there!

Wasn't overly impressed with the grinder cut off tool thing, took ages literally ages to cut a few small sections, the compressor needs to fill after using it for a minute at most think lack of ptfe tape on the joins didn't help, must remember to pick some up tomorrow. First time I've used the comp we got anyway. Need to find a gigtasaurus tank!

Going to have a go at spraying the epoxy mastic on this arch, while the panels are cut open I can give all the cavitys a good dousing!

Aye, the cheap brass wire cup brushes are a nightmare! I made the mistake of doing my bay with bar arms, kept feeling the stings but didn't realise because i had my welding mask to protect my face, pulled it up after and i must have had 100 bits of wire sticking out my skin!

Nice to see it coming along dude! Will have to catch up on your endeavours over the weekend!

how hard would it be to cut the whole thing out? i was thinking of cutting the tray outta the mk2 I'm scrapping as its in good nick

Coming on nicely Saf, keep it up :-)

It's a pain tried it on an old bready but gave up, sledgied n scrapped it!

It was a mess when I got the car but we fibreglassed it up for a quick fix, easily sorted now I've the tools and space :)

Just won a genuine mk2 wing 25 quid well pleased

As long as you get the right loom for the right year in a mk3..... Early mk3's seem abit more difficult with a late loom as I'm finding out, think I've sussed it with the help of forums. time will tell

Need to do my battery tray, not looking forward too it :-(

Invested in a Dremel today, it's a beast! Been so useful today.

Battery trays coming on well!
