fitted new vw rear axle bushes and psd braided hoses and refitted the tank and fuel lines

DSC01935.jpg

needed a new flexi section for the mot and spotted a cheap system that was only 3 miles away from chars in derb, top lad called aiden (beyond evil on here) for 50 notes, so thought might as well replace the whole rusty existing system with a cheap temporary fix for the mot and something to give me a nice exhaust note for when i fit the weber dtml. still wanting an upswept bastuck style exhaust like prescilla had

Does that zorst go bbbbbbrrrap!! :-D

Ha i love it, the GTI in the back looks good too

Here's a pick of my single light grill with black badge and red tape bought from motor factors...

(Sorry not the best to see grill but if you enlarge it will give you an idea)

sweet the single grille looks spot on, tbh I'm getting kinda fond of the twin fogs now and I'm looking forward to blinding some twats who keep thier full beams on, on the country lanes!

anyway found some more time to fiddle with the coupe

first was the brakes, girlings :puke: are the worst! the calipers were so rusty and fubarred that it was impossible to get any of the retaining clips out let alone the slider pins, and forget pushing the piston back, man i got so fucked off with them, ended up launching them across the yard! twatty things.

anyway we have no vw1 calipers but luckily i salvaged the crashbots old girlings which were in almost newish nick, deffo a refurbed set, ahhhh these were a breeze in comparison, finally happy again i got the stupid pads all lined up pins in place, and all was a good un, front braided flexis fitted and brakes bled.

But! the brake lights only come on for the first few mms of brake pedal travel, any more and they go out. could this be due to still having some air in the system so its loosing pressure causing the lights to go out?

we also had fun trying to sort out the lack of idle on the poopberg, idle jets were clear, autochoke working, after swapping and testing bits from various poopbergs and the problem still being there we suspected the ignition system.

the dizzy cap had seen better days so was replaced, the points were set to 0.4mm and still the car refused to idle and was revving its freaking nuts off!

so anyway we decided to move onto the weber, although it was missing loads of pieces, and was one of the contributing factors to our poor chazbots accidents, we thought meeshka, we'll put it on just to rule out the poopberg being the contributing factor.

after finding by some stroke of luck, all the correct bolts including allen head bolts which are countersunk into the adapter plate we set to work building it back up.

got it all pieced back together, fired her up and it was revving it nuts off again to 4k-5k. eeek!

we then noticed that the carb was sittign in the pish, it looked as though the rubber base had been ripped in two. we assumed the split base was causing the problems, so off to find another base, luckily a spare manifold in the unit heralded the very beast we needed! so we fitted that only to have teh same thing happen! revving its ballsacks off!

k man then thought hang on a minute, maybe the allen head bolts are too long, reaching all the threading in the manifold which then means any additional tightening would stretch the rubber gasket! ingenious, and after 2 fecked bases we assumed that was it! so to top off the evening karl cut down the bolts to size.

so mission to looms ensued the next morning only to find no suitable donors for a gasket, qucik call to the man with the plan uncle steve (86c) unearthed a hidden gen, a pristine rubber gasket for the fannymold. result!

and here is the man himself giving his respects to mj with a moonwalk and a chamone for his pimp bike

DSC01954.jpg

DSC01958.jpg

anyway back to the unit and the new rubber base fitted, adaptor plate fitted with the cut down bolts, everything built back up into place and hurrah she runs, she idles, she screams her nuts off when having the bollocks revved over her (when you actually tell it to via the the throttle cable and not of its own accord) w000t

karl may fill you in on his throttle cable quadrant butchery, and theres loads more tales in the saga but id rather leave some of them out for various reasons

its not in its final incarnation, filter needs fitting properly, need to mount the swirl pot and route the fuel lines better and

oh and i need this replacement wiring, its for the fog light. or at a minimum the relay itself

its relay holder 135 937 501A

Pin4 Top Row Middle - (Grey Wire to 3 pin plug)

Pin8 Middle Row Left - (Yellow/White Wire to fusebox loom)

Pin2 Middle Row Right - (Black with Yellow stripe to 3 pin plug)

Pin6 Bottom Row Middle (Brown to brown 1 spade plug)

Cant remember the relay number, may have been 15.

the earth plug is plugged into the creamy white junction on the top left of the pic, the wire I'm holding is the one that goes up to the fuse box

Love your lets get this f*cking working attitude, all I did was just wiped a bit of moss off my mk2 golf

Be wary of blocked jets, If that filter is long in the tooth or needs a clean and an oil. I had constant jet blockages with an old filter like that which wasn't worth saving. It was great for the noise of the carb mind.

Here's some random threads for weber issues (obviously there's loads of info in two pinned threads by Danny Lee and Steveo3002)

Wish I had your exhaust with my weber and GK, hopefully soon

cheers dudeface, karlie gave it the machine polish i did the hand polish, i need another clean cos its got grubby in the unit but ill do that after la mot!

cheer maccoll tbh I've been getting a bit disheartened at the minute as loads more jobs keep piling up that id ever expect, and the golfs mot is out on the 24th and due to going away for a family wedding for a week in some remote part of wales i cannae do feck all about it and cant get teh coupe rocking for a wee bit!

had a good effort at it tho and some of the things id never tried before like removing a tank which wasnt so bad, it means that I'm going to do the same on the tank of the lupolo now as the filler neck has seen better days and it means i can get cut brush happy with the inner arches which was a job i was puttting off till after an mot but i suppose its better now than never as I've spotted some peeling underseal which can only mean hidden rust =[

and the golfs claim is still awaiting resolution which means I'm not able to take remedial action such as por15ing the bare metal, its a fucking joke to be hoenst and I'm not pleased about it but alas what can you do!

anyway back on topic about teh webers, i had a good read through danny lees thread on saturday night in the early hours and we found some interesting information, namely that theres no fuel return on a dtml, and the what one would assume to be a fuel outlet or inlet on the side of teh carb is actually the vacuum take off *whoops* haha! and some information with regards to the throttle modifications which then got k into an msn convo with dan which gave him all the required info to get the throttle sorted properly on the weber as opposed to the quick fix before (after the stigma attached to the carb it needed to have teh throttle fully sorted before i think anyone would let me take it on the road)

will have a read through those threads now, the exhaust will be up for sale for not alot when i get round to getting a custom system made up so you can have first refusal if you want.

4 branch and lowering kit are on the cards in teh future along with the hunt to source a gk inlet fannymold and a hh or gf? golf cam

would ideally like to switch it over to a hall sender based dizzy too

edit: I've fitted a new fuel filter and the pancake filter has been re-oiled =]

Big thank you to Danny Lee for his guidance on the Weber. Our first incarnation was miles away from the current working set-up. Lets just say it was plumbed in a bit wrong :?.

With the correct layout for fuel pipes and vacuums, the next issue to sort was the throttle cable (this being the undoing of the carb on Charlie's car). Initially a bolt was fitted on the throttle butterfly arm to hold the throttle cable in place, but this meant there was masses of slack. Searching for a more precise and safer option I looked through Danny's thread to see his hybrid Weber/Pooberg throttle linkage set-up.

Having 3 Pierberg 2E3s spare meant we could use a thoroughly dead one for examinination and reference in relation to the other 2 working Pierbergs. It also provided a source of parts.

Having spoken to Danny I removed the Weber's throttle arm, and took my angle grinder to it, leaving only the part necessary to operate the choke. I then removed a Pierberg quadrant, and cut off anything relating to the throttle return, etc, and trimmed the quadrant down, and the remaining metal (that retains the nipple of the VW throttle cable), so that it would sit flush on top of the adapted Weber thottle arm. The VW cable now sat perfectly in the quadrant, and some of the slack was taken out.

Next issue was the return for the quadrant, as it was sticking. The metal base plate supplied by Weber to allow fitment to VWs incorporated an arm into it that could be used for a return spring. The only issue was that the return spring, like many of the retaining nuts and bolts was absent. A quick scout about on here revealed that a spring from one of the rear seat back retainers could be used, so I drilled the modified quadrant to allow that spring to hook into it and join the arm on the base plate. Success!

The pedal is relatively stiff under foot, but it should allow for more precise throttle control. The final piece of the puzzle is the manual choke cable, as again, this was missing from our set-up. We were on course to be able to use a late Mark1 Polo manual choke cable, but it needed cutting down to length, and unfortunately it ended up being cut too short :-(. With this sorted, it'll be good to go. I think Saf also wants to lose the old thermostat/choke from the Pooberg and bridge the now redundant pipes properly with a 90 degree elbow of some description.

fog lights working, weber is sorted, giving the ignition system a spruce up tonight with new sparks, leads, contact points, rotor arm and hopefully if the dude replys before i set off for derby, picking up a brand new KW kit and fitting it prior to the polo show.

Mot is booked for tomorrow in northampton and should pass and therefore all going well, i shall see everyone at the show tomorrow =D

WOOOHOOO

See y'all at Tatton Tomo =]

Nice one mate, look forward to seeing it. :)

couldnt make the mot last week in northampton cos despite fitting new plugs, leads, rotor arm, condensor, the contact points supplied by gsf didnt fit, which meant using shagged contact points and setting the gap on them, the car was idling sweet as a nut but was misfiring over 4k, so we had to abandon the plan of taking it to the mot'rs and getting it to polo show!

had an adventure in the golf including a manifold stud and 2 nuts going awol (world cup gearbox mount ftl) so it sounded like a hemi, got fined 25 quid by po po for nto having my lights on at 8 in the eve in spitting rain =/ (shitty thing is i had them on for the entire journey, but id only come out of a petrol station about a mile before getting pulled)

Got back to polo this friday, armed with a new dizzy cap and contact points that actually fit, new clutch cable and a weber throttle spring. set the engine to tdc, fitting new points and set the gap to 0.4mm, and the car was alive and sweet again, timed up perfectly and the marker wasnt wavering about +/- about 6 degrees anyway as it was with the shagged contacts.

so got the car in for a test at 9 on the saturday, failed on both top mounts (nipping them up wasnt sufficient), split cv boot which either hadnt been noticed in the other mot the car had, or had occured in the time between. and the 2 front tyres on the borbets, as they are gone!

The mot dude said to me if i can get him the top mounts and cv boot, he would fit the top mounts for 60 quid, and cv boot for 20 quid, and he'd make sure id have the car with test by the end of the day.

So I'm thinking yeh, 80 quid. wouldnt want to pay that, as id only be taking it apart later in the evening to fit the kw kit. So in a true saf blag style, i said ill do 80 quid, if as well as fitting the two top mounts and cv boot (which was an outer one, so a mare if you dont have a stretcher) if he fits my kw kit on the front, i remember how much of a pain getting the inserts out is!

I told him it fit the rears in the evening, because the existing had no mot failures.

He said yep, so on the blower to gsf, they say they have two top mounts and a cv boot, sweet, and i can use my trade discount, nice! so i go down there and they drop the bombshell, only 1 top mount, listed as two on the sytem only one on the shelf.

FUCKKKKKKKKK! that means not mot pass and uber gayness of having to get a train back home.

So off to about 4 motorfactors and everyone says monday. gayors.

Karlie for the resque, he belled gsf in nottingham and they had one aswell, 40 minute round trip to get it but desperate times.

So first things first, back to gsf derby to pick up 1 top mount and the cv boot. as I'm paying for it, some dude comes up trumps and finds the second top mount, wahay.

So due to the saga, its now 2.30, the mot place closes at 4. Hmmmm! If he fancies doing 2 top mounts, springs, inserts, and a cv boot in and hour and a half, hes feeling hopeful at best.

The poor guy was at it till 6, but he loved working on the car, and him and his mate who own the place are absolute legends.

Mot Masters in Derby, absolute diamonds, proper mot testing centre only so they are goign to make sure the car is tip top, but theyve now started taking on some work themselves for mot failures, and have very competitve rates, considering the time the spent on the car, its been there for most of the day and he worked 2 hours overtime, it was an absolute bargain...

anyway we went to unit after it was taxed online, put the kws on the rear and now we in manchester.

oh the fail on the tyres was cured by sticking on my golfs steelies, but swapping over to the castalettes tomo morn before the show.

will be with the polo3 guys on their club stand with Karl too, cars a bit grubby after having everyones hands working on doing various jobs to get it ship shape, we couldnt find the rivit gun today either so its missing and arch trim and sill trim that was removed for the welding, might give it a clean tomorrow morning at the show depending on how i feel

if anyones interested in taking the borbets and a small light rear panel for sale

and word gaz see you there

see if i can find you saf, have a look at the beast!

had my insurance policy cancelled due to the pending claim on my golf where some fuckin numpty crashed into the back off me.

was paying 296 quid for the polo fully comp, best quote now it 600 pounds, just spoke to adrian flux. they want 4 grand =/

oh and if a claim is pending, despite the claims database saying its an 02 code (damage recovery, not at fault) all the insurers class it as at fault and therefore wont insure me because I've had one claim and another accident in 2007 where some prick drove into me, tried to dirive away i caught him and then he refused to reply to any insurance literature so his insurers closed the car =/

bollocks to insurers

  • Author

well afted doing some reading up last night, if you get an insurance policay canceled by your insurers you have to declare it and most insurers after that wont touch you with a barge pole.

so i canceled my policy today as it was due for termination tomorrow by them, this way my record doesnt get tarnished.

admiral offered me 990 pounds on the polo =/ when an identical one (prescilla) that was the first car insured on the golfs policy when i took it out a year ago was 460.

so back in the golf for the mean time, took it for a drive today to make sure its all good for the drive to work tomorrow and it needs some tlc which is annoying as its what i wanted to do this weekend, start stripping her down to replace the crankshaft oil seal & clutch becuase its contaminated now with oil.

ill just drive it till insurance is up on it on the 24th, cash in the tax and get the olop insured on that date. If i cashed in the tax now i wouldnt get this month back anyway so i might as well use it up and if i still get 13 days of insurance left might as well use it

anyway couple of pics of it, needs a wash when its dry and clay polish and wax and start putting every thing back on it arch and sill trim lower dash trays etc

golfs rockin its original steels for the now as the borbs have a new home now

the fronts could do with lowering top caps and a coil cut off, the reckon the borbets would have been fine with the rears notched one up on the spring platform

your grass needs a cut

Nice colour aswelll :)

You jammy sod, cant believe you've found an original yellow coupe-s

Looks superb in its original trim, just needs cleaning up,makes me wish id sprayed mine yellow instead.

I've still not refitted the arch and sill trim, but I'm wavering over running without the arch trims, as it looks nae too bad, and the cars solid underneath then.

aye nufty lil bits to tidy up and fiddle with but all in good time.

i also want a subframe :( as I've remembered how good wishbones are

new wheels that shall be on for edition

OZroute01.jpg

yay for another set of oz routays =D

decided i cant run without arch trims, as the front arch trims extend to the trim on the front valance so it would look a little odd.
