just bite the bullet saf and whip engine back out. catch the coolant in a clean tub and you will have it out and in within 2 hours. saves messing on your back under the car.

w00p! still not found a insurable car so still lookin for epic cheap shitness (might look for a decent mk2) so that guide might be of help my friend :D

No worries minimon, ill make one with a dedication for my pie eating farmer friend

yeah the Big Gay Polo breathes again! good times saf!

away next week but will try n bob round sometime week afta n check you hany work...

really wanna see how the 16v performs against the 1600 8v on carbs... will have to go play when i get my arse in gear n have another play with the mk1!

hope you are well

safe geez

aye I'm sound ads, deffo wanna see the mk1 olop on the road, bet it looks sweet, i nearly bought it a few times when it was for sale. big gay polo, major lolz! and i cant have a proper play until I've changed my front tyres and got a proper reducer for the downpipe after flexi to meet the rest of the system.

they shall meet soon tho, hopefully on a dry day =P

The trick to fit most vag gearbox's is to tilt the engine down abit, and always get the diff flange angled up towards where the starter would be, slip it over the flywheel and the twist it back down to wher it should bolt up. If you get me? lol

i did have the engine tilted a bit, but unfortunatly because the downpipe is close to the arb, you cant actually tilt it enough, and the mk2 bay is smaller than the mk3 and so the bell housing catches on the inner wing when trying to line it up. thanks for the advice tho gangster =]

just bite the bullet saf and whip engine back out. catch the coolant in a clean tub and you will have it out and in within 2 hours. saves messing on your back under the car.

cheers rick tbh man, thats what my plan was for monday since all i have to disconnect now is the downpipe from the 4 branch, coolant hoses, fuel lines to carb and the wiring to the battery from the starter.

back in manc on monday afternoon (away in edinburger for a cousins wedding) so cannae play on her this weekend. I had another do with it on tuesday, ground off a nick chuck of one side of the gearbox flange but it was maybe like 5mms too little, haha. so yep monday man is my day on my calander that she will live again and live again well =]

and yep although i dont mind messing about on the ground its just a pain when its wet! thanks x 10000000000 for the use of the crane man, i owe you a favour (and some mk1 glass xxx)

Woohoo, the Mk2 is back together and running again after the saga with the clutch release bearing.

Had it running for ten minutes today but the fan wasnt kicking in despite the thermostat opening, so ill be wiring in a switch to do it manually.

also the bore of my downpipes flexi is greater than the rest of my system, so it needs sorting, only chance i can get is saturday, so just got to find a place that doesnt mind fiddling with systems and take it over there.

does anyone know the factory timing setting for these engines at warm operating temps?

i foookin cannot wait to give the car a wee blat

Also I used the following for my throttle cable

Weber throttle cable part number 99901628

Weber pedal block, part number 99901645

Throttle Cable Adjsut for the above

Weber Pedal Block was the perfect fit for the polo pedal, and the weber throttle cables end was a direct fit with no need for filing into the bike carbs throttle lever assembly.

the true acid test will be when its on the road, but it feels responsive and returns well, although not as quick as i would like. the cable has been left at its standard length, but will be shortened later, i jsut wanted to avoid bad routing and kinks at this teething stage

For the temperature guage, i used a Mk3 Black Temp Sender, connected the blue and yellow wire from the clocks to one pin, and grounded the other and voila, working temp gauge.

got a t-piece for the oil pressure sender take-off so i can fit the mk2s two oil pressure senders, in leiu of the AFH's one (therefore either the low or high buzzer will always sound with only one connected)

Hey m8 hows that exhaust of yours??? Did it fit ok??? My progress with the AEE conversion is slow but good. Engine is being rebored and new pistons atm but they guy is taking his time. Made my inlet manifold, vacuum advance system, been dressing the carbs up, ordered a dyno stage 3 kit, sent the carb vacuum boots away to be renewed. Nearly finished rebuilding the head just need new tappets, piper fast road cam and get it skimmed. Had a 2" stainless system made at PhilJ's despite braking down 14 times getting there lol. Fitted a raceland manifold soon to be cut open and make sure none of the joins over lap for best performance and wrap it in fibre glass.

That facet pump you got you may wanna change. I got one fitted to my polo just above the fuel tank and when you would leave it for a week or so the b*****d thing would run dry and you would have to drag the fuel up manually(mouth full of petrol) anyway doin this a number of times the bloody thing got worn out and wouldn't pump fuel any more. I dun about a 1000miles on mine. Gunna go for the electric motor style one now.

Brydgey :p

engine was all fitted and running went to take it for drive and made horrible noise with clutch in, turns out there was no clutch release bearing, hence engine coming out again to strip gearbox, fit new bearing and put it back together

long

going to a welder on saturday to have the downpipe attached to the rest of the system and to modify a couple of the hangers. then its happy days

got to find insurance now that will cover me for all mods as I've nowswitched my existing policy over to the mk3

  • Author

cheers brydgey dude, exhaust is doing fine, hangers still need modding but hadnt fallen off in a fair few miles of motoring, needed to remove the fibreglass as it was pissing me off getting in my hands face and clothes every time i was working on the car haha!

lol about breaking down 14 times sounds like my old mini, ill bear it in mind about the pump, its pretty good at pulling up the fuel from the tank despite being miles away, had no worries even when it was dry and ran for the first time

woooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooo shes alive, and been on a proper test today, 15 miles to the exhaust place but stuck in an hours worth of traffic on the m60 due to an american lorry jackknifing and spilling its loads onto the motorway!

at least i know its happy idling in traffic.

downpipe & flexi is now welded to the rest of the system, and he patched up a couple of leaks on some of the other welds, so proper pleased now! total cost niente =D plus the peril got to meet the lupolo in the workshop =D

only gripes are i cant get in 1st and 2nd so need to fiddle with the gear-linkage and i need to fit a new speedo cable, but fooooooooook me she flies and sounds immense.

saf is a very happy bunny

Good to hear matey, you'll have to have a blast down to the shire some time over christmas so I can drool over her lol

First meet for the Polo - MancVAG January

Setting off in the morning, cold as fook, doors and boot frozen shut and a layer of ice on every window inside

fitted a 300mm momo team and snap-off hub, and g40 oil pressure adaptor so i can run the two pressure switches from the coupe s loom. so no incessant beeping.

however, you can see some oil splatters near the coolant bottle in the engine bay pictures above.

turned out to be slightly more ominous the next day on the way to work

DSC02636.jpg

so I've taken the oil breather pod off, cleaned it out, fitted it to a catch tank made out of an irn bru bottle and a piperx mushroom filter, replaced oil filter and now using 5w/40 synthetic oil

refitted and reconnected everything, and once i get some more anti-freeze ill take her out for a spin tomorrow and see whats what

I'm hoping it was just a blocked breather pod or kinked breather hose, and not something more serious. if it was any of the above there is a possibility that the build of crankcase pressure has burst the crankshaft o-ring as the oil came from there or the breather pod.

upon cleaning out the breather pod, there was a fair bit of ice in the oil breather pipes, so fingers crossed its all good, otherwise i may need to rape my lupo lump for the bottom end.

hopefully its all ok... how does it go?

You coolant is rather low in that pic :)

  • Author

it was at that level before i set off, didnt want to top it up as id ran out of coolant and anti-freeze and didnt want to go adding tap water into the mix, especially in this weather.

it goes bloody well mate, still need to sort out the gear linkage when i can be arsed and fit a speedo, but aye i was good to get it on the road again, i think i scared karl a bit and it torque steers more than my old g40

Fabulous, they are candidates for giant killers aren't they :)

Look forward to seeing it at the RR day :)

Saw this photo and thought of yours..

hmmm, new sparks are needed me thinks

DSC02701.jpg

engine cranked and fired into life pretty well bout an hour ago but cut out 2 mins later, refuses to start now. may be something as mickey mouse as ran out of fuel now, dead plugs, or some acuum leaks int inlet mani.

spared the neighbours but got tomo off work, so going to try and get it started tomo and get to derby, if it still not a happy pup after a long run, ill rip the head off to inspect what the feckin crack is

i do still <3 the lil scamp tho

Running rich on cylinders 1&4?

  • Author

sparks werent replaced when i fitted the new engine, so that could have been with the previous setup, will try and get hold of some new spark plugs tomorrow morning, as I'm going to take it on a drive up to my unit despite the knocking noises in this thread =/

Very possible - my two AFH's were full of carbon when i dismantled them fresh out their 6n's. The first one was owned by a GSF mechanic and the current one had done less than 70k.

Doesn't say much for the standard fuel system..
