If you're referring to the sound from the cabin, then it's slightly artificial - there's a spesh membrane in the bulkhead to let through induction noise... Quite a lot of OEMs do that now, you end up making the motor uber-quiet to get decent drive-by noise figures, and obviously try to minimise cabin noise - only problem is people struggle to hear the engine.

Just needs a custom exhaust to make this sound better.

heres a pic of my mates one. the sound is amazing and will sounder better when he makes his mind up on wether to get it supercharged or turbo'd lol. hes only 18 btw.:)

no thanks.

the fsi engines are baaaaaad.

the Phirm have had several mildly tuned ones needing top-end rebuilds due to the direct injection design not lubricating the valves, causing excessive cokeing and other nastyness. :-(

shame really, but VW should've dropped direct injection petrols like a hot stone, toyota investigated them years ago and found the same thing, lack of valve lubrication.

Having owned a Mk3 Golf VR6, i found it's a love/hate thing.

I enjoyed the performace, wouldnt say it was super fast off the line but once they get going they just give and give. In terms of VR6 vs 1.8T, my pretty much standard VR6 matched a Chipped 1.8T Audi A3 up to 70mph.

Handling wasnt great, have to expect understeer from FWD V6.

MPG - you dont get a VR6 for economy. I would put £50 a week into mine, and would regularly get low 20's. On a good motorway run i could get into the 30's but on a bad day stuck in the snow i got the MPG down to below 5!

The worst bit of all was the upkeep. I would have the car at the garage at least once a month for something, and it's always expensive. Someone said that VR6 bits are common and cheap, i dont think thats really true. I had many ABS problems, electrical issues, rusty sills, coolant issues, heater matrix went, sump cracked (coils wound down too low), oil pump. Luckily my timing chain tensioners were fine, so that job never needed doing.

Also, I never liked the look of the Mk3, but by the time i slapped the coilovers on was happy with the look and stance.

that was running about 230bhp with out a charger and was crazy the cars that it could keep up with!

230 without a charger, good going.

230 without a charger, good going.

hmm sounds fishy...

shrick manifold, cams, decent exhaust, decat, headwork, six branch, may possibly do it.

I don't see how people can slag the power output of the VR6s. 190 bhp from the 2.9, BMW only get 193 bhp from the E36 328i of the same period - and that has a 24v head as opposed to the 12v VR6!

But BMW did get 170bhp out of the m20b25 (2.5 found in e30s) 10 years before the vr6 was about which is the same power as the 2.8 VR's...

Other than that, i have no experience of vr6s, so my post was most likely pointless. ha.
