205 gti 1.9, its an 8v but has 130bhp, way better to drive then a 16v kr/abf, much more torque throughout

i disagree, i preferred my mk2 16v to the 205 gti i drove, don't get me wrong the pug is an awesome car but i just loved the way the power is delivered in the 16v, but i guess its all a matter of preference in the end.

besides if your driving the golf properly then you wouldn't be dropping out of its power band and there for wouldn't notice that it had less power below 4k

i love it when people have the misconception that 8v have more torque than 16vs, and this isn't aimed at you xcore, more at the noobs that say that there 8v polo is quicker than a 16v polo because it has more torque even though it doesn't, some people just seem to think that 16v's have nothing but horse power and because a 16v has more power up top it has nothing down in the range

round southsea and manchester you cant really proper plant it and redline it because by then your going way faster than the speed limit, which wouldnt be a problem back in preston but theres loads of obstacles and stuff to hit :-/

which is annoying because the engine in my 318is is a 1.9 16v only really kicks and starts to proper shift at 3.5k

8vs are good if you like to drive fairly briskly upto the speed limit and not going for all out death

i drove toms polo yesterday and it was a 1.4 16v and the gearbox and clutch was well heavy, same as the mk2 golf gti 16v we bought and it is well stiff and heavy.

so what i was wondering is does the more valves/power mean the clutch and gearbox are heavier/ harder to change gear?

Completely irrelevant with valves,but for clutch size relating to power handling.

The reason the 1.4 was heavier was probably due to the bigger clutch,needed to transfer more power. The springs in the pressure plate have to be stronger to clamp the bigger clutch plate.

Obviously then,a more powerful engine needs a bigger clutch with higher pressure to transfer the power,but valves are irrelevant - a 1.2 16v will typically have a lighter/smaller clutch than a 1.8 8v.

In addition though,on the scale you speak of,there are other factors - worn clutch cable,stiff release arm,thrust bearing,etc. The difference between a 6n 1.0 and 6n 1.4 16v should be negligable,as the latter clutch is only a small percent bigger (i think 180mm and 200mm respectively).

Maybe yours felt like that as it was on a 1.6 gearbox? Unless your on about one on a 1.9 gearbox

i prefer my 8v!!! i have a fue mates that have 16v corsa b(SPORT) & c (GSI) and my aee 1.6 8v with 1.4 box walks all over them!!!! but even at 120mph it not fastenough for my!!!! wonting turbo now :p

My 1.8 scirocco 8v pulled all the way through the gears had a lovely torque curve.

That's like saying that just because an 8v 2.0 is faster than a 16v 1.0 then 8v's are better..

A Corsa 1.6 16v will piss on your Polo 1.6 8v and that's the thick of the topic.
