Everything solid changes with heat, because all the little things (cant remember the scientific name ) that make up solids liquids and gases in solids have no where to move to get out of each others way when they're flying about and hitting each other, so they squash against the edges (if you like) to make room. Common sense finally being used lmao

metals expand more than wood because of the composition of the molecules, wood is made of carbon chains which are less kinetically stable and just combust when provided with high levels of energy (heat) and oxygen (air). the bonding of metal ions means they move alot more (explains the expanding) but wont combust (catch fire) as the ionic bonds are alot stronger
