On top of that you would need all the right tools to do it properly. Makes sense to drop it off at a refurbisherers really.

I had exactly the same problem as you in my 6n 16v, whining in 4th gear when i was deaccelertating, did it for 12 months, then blew up. Was one of the main bearings in the box that went, I had the box and clutch replaced and it came to about £480, place called cleckheaton gearboxes, cant recommend them enough, picked my car up on the tuesday, brought seat covers and rubber glovesfor my cream leather interior, brought it back on wed and the box has a 2 year garantee

i used to build boxes for a living, if it does it on the spot it's release bearing, while driving it'll be box related.

Sorry to bother you again. A mate of mine is doing it now, we've got the box off and started taking it apart. he's asked me if I can find out what the DTI settings are for each bearing ??

I guess your mate means the pre load settings for each of the bearings, so that he can order the right spacer washers?

They might be in the mk1 polo Haynes manual which has a section on transmission overhaul.

This seems the most logical answer.

And once again my box has started to make the whine but its does it now when accelerating and de-accelerating, still smooth to select gears :)
