Fitting bike carbs onto a mk2/3 & 6n

Featured Replies

only got about 20 miles to go, if that, to get to the RR , will stick to the slow lane on the way there

budget and time are both running out now so i'll have to make do with the 600's for now and see how it goes

thanks for the answer :)

i'll post up some details of my conversion when it's all up and running

if it works, i've been told about a nice cheap way of making an inlet manifold for a valver lump, which has so far cost me £16.99! i think it was hummer who told me about it, dont want to steal his thunder!

hope it works for you fella, seemed okay for me! just fiddly!

hummer = total legend saved my god damned life today

Now out bbrrrrrraaping here there and everywere, well I will when I sort out a damn throttle return spring :(

Ant

cheers fella, no worries, glad i was of use, you had done everything, just missed the one little thing, if i had remembered you would have sorted it.

keep me posted on rolling road day.

next problem, where the hell doall the fuel fittings on the carbs go to/come from!!??

cant for the life of me work out what i need to connect to where

and the vac advance on the dizzy, guessing this needs to be connected to the inlet somewhere? anyone got any ideas?

the fuel connects under the carbs and the remaining pipes on the carbs are just breathers and coolant pipes, which i personally have not used.

for the servo and vac advance i took the feed from no.1 injector hole, which on the remaining injector holes i tapped and screwed some turned ally into the injector hole. i wish my PC would let me get pics up to show you.

Rick - humer! (not hummer! - they are lardy, I'm skinny!)

no, no and no.. you dont cut/bend springs... lots of people seem to like stretching there springs out (idiot superbike owners) thinking it will help with things... as far as springs go.. you want to

  • Then bigger, from a 600-900cc,though that's not to say bigger is better universally. They have vaccum-operated flat slides, which govern the throttle dependant of what the engine can draw at any time,so

Yes!! thats exactly how I figured to do it!

Not a bad looking manifold there humer, nice and cheap aswell.

I would take the vac advance from all 4 cylinders aswell, should be easy using the injector holes again I'm guessing. That's what I've done with mine and it advances nicely from 10 degrees advanced at idle to 28degress at 4500rpm.

With my servo I have just taken it from No.4 cylinder and that seem to work alright, I noticed all the boggbros. manifolds do the same also.

so i can get a dizzy of the polo until which year? and ignition

you can call me simple minded if you wish.. has anyone done this on a 6n 1.3 like my car??

cheers

PS: I'm a cook, not a mechanic hehe, will give free recipes =) and cooking tips =P

I think it's quite tidy, and you're probably the only one with an OEM bike carb manifold!

It is a bit long, holding the carbs close to the bulkhead, but as long as that gives you no problems with throttle cable or filters then you're laughing.

i couldnt go any shorter as i was almost out of metal on the oem flanges, but it seems okay, i have used some very very fine brass mesh from an old machining shop a friend had lying around, i have used that for now to assist the filtering, but i do need to look into some decent filters.

vac advance - is it worth taking from each cylinder? anybody advise on this, a gent above mentioned i should do it, but is it worth the extra work? - i still have not had it rolling roaded, just set it up at work on the C.o machine and timing light method, which showed it was running way too rich with the 1.5 jets.

if anybody decides to follow my budget manifold, i advise them to buy bolts instead of the torz head bolts that comes with the manifold as its difficult to get a torz bit between the carbs to tighten the manifold down.

mikeymk - what do you do fella, you seem very knowledgable with mechanical stuff. i like the flanges yoiu made up for your carb setups. should get a few together and sell them - reckon you would make a nice little earner!

just had a thought about the vac advance, i have been given four little ports off motor bike inlet ports to balance the carbs and when i drill and tap the inlet i can use these for my vac advance! excellent, i love it when a plan comes together!!!

I no longer have the engineering workshop, but I've never made stuff to sell anyway,i just dont sell stuff. Though i have just flogged a nine year old Mondeo for 300 quid because it was mint and someone really wanted it,but everything i dont use otherwise goes scrap.

Someone on here actually had a pop at me for scrapping a nearly new and sweet running ABD engine,it was new when i got it and i did less than 10k with it. Scrapped i think seven other Polo engines, inc '03 Golf 1.6 valver head.

Got an ebay account,too..

I've completely lost the point of the post, now.

Oh yeah, the flanges are good but they can only be round,so i had to port the ABD and AFH. Just gave the AEE a polish. I've made a few sets,i have four sets of varying sizes in case i wanna change carbs or engine.

I can weld though,so if i couldn't use them id make a stainless manifold. Problem with doing that is the manifold is only any use for that head type - flanges are universal.

Mesh filtration is fine,I've been using 180 micron stainless mesh for years. Air jets get a bit dusty after a while but a bit of petrol in a spraygun sorts it in seconds.

no, its been done on an AFH in a mk1 golf but i think it leaked or something and he ended up going to bogg bros

mine leaked but i used to good old bathroom sealant!

mikey, so i assume you are an engineer? good man, i have a an old friend (50 or 60) and he is sooo knowledgable its great, i always go see him when I'm stuck, what he doesnt know. . . . he has a 12x6 foot shed at the end of the garden with a lathe, pillar drill and other bits and bobs and he helped me sort the manifold out.

i would like to do an engineering course to help me do more things.

you should sell stuff and recoup some pennies towards your next thing. but what ever floats your boat is fine by me. unsure of what the mesh is, but it is extremely fine - just shaped it by hand and then zip tied it on.

I have no idea why a similar thread wasn't stickied years ago.

made a right ole trip to bogg bros today and I can honestly say it is well well worth it, car feels totaly different now and is sooo easy to drive with power all hte way through the rev range compared to old.

It made 92bhp at 6000rpm and still climbing but kept trying to jump the rollers so we couldnt take it any further

And as a note its a 1.3 gt on cbr600 carbs and we settled on a 155 jet fyi

also if you find the old 3 pin plug that connected to the 'coil' on your gt, take the middle wire and then connect it to the - on the new propper coil then your rev counter will work !

i have a polo 1 with a aee engine with cbr 900 fireblade carbs 272 degree cam flowd head costum inlet

this is my topic on a dutch forum

two movies

Cant access the first link mate, welcome by the way.

I've been reading up trying to understand the 'black art' of carbs. Has anyone run electronic mapped ignition with bike carbs on a Polo. This would surely bring a bit more flexibility to the performance and perhaps a better drive and power/torque? Out of my depth here but just thinking of some ideas. A local GT + bike carbs could be cheap fun. Vac advance and dizzys just confuse me.

Vac advance and centrifugal advance dizzies are good for what most people on here are using the engines for i'd say, but megajolt etc would be "better" all round, i think 'bort' runs that set up - any advice, bort?

155!!! wow, mine was on that and it ran terrible, 130 seem better on mine! bizarre, but i haven't had it rolling roaded.

also was recomended by the 74yr old guy at bogg bros that vac advance isnt that important and he did away with mine as soon as he saw it

I suppose it depends on the way the engine will be used... lean mixtures need more advance for efficiency, so on most engines, for pottering about with the occasional cain, it can have its uses - in theory. Saying that, i never really noticed a difference with it, but i wouldn't rule it out.

I *think* I saw a car in a thread linked from a thread on here that had 'Ibiza electronic ignition' OEM version of something like MegaJolt or me misunderstanding? Might not be able to be mapped well mind you.

Saw a vac advance dizzy at the scrappy today :ninja:

next time your at your g'friends give a shout and ill meet up for a ride in it and see how it compares to mine.

does the t piece flow straight through from the Fuel In-pipe in to the return with the feed to the carbs at 90degree's... have i got this right???
