Project Ranger

Featured Replies

Got this Black Ranger back in Feb/March it was (and still is at this moment) an absolute dog.

It's leaking from every where, started to leak fuel onto the manifold so I had to stop running it.

I did do some things to it replaced the headlights as they where broken, doors rotten so got a second hand one of retrowagen12345 (thanks mate!), sorced all the parts needed, to many to list

The point is that its finally going into the workshop tomorrow so that Mariuz can get his hands under the bonnet, and if he does the job well, like on my GT this car is going to be great.

So pics will be up of all that tomorrow and Saturday.

Here is how it looks now: -

When i put the the air box back on not sure if i should use the original filter, K&N Panel or a K&N bolt on? any suggestions?

Have a few parts questions?

1. If i change the cam to a GT (3F) cam this will increase the HP? if so does anyone know witch one to use (part No) as there a 2 depending on the chassis of the car?

2. Does anyone have or has used an Ashley exhaust/manifold on their polo any info would be great!

3. The wheels i have on need front spacers should i use a 10mm or 20mm?

More updates on the way

Nice to see a mk2 project :)

answers:

1. 3F cam won't work with mechanical fuel pump (no drive for the push rod) so would have to swap to electric fuel pump (or source rare GK engine cam from germany.. not easy to find).

2. Not sure but I heard they can have problems (only stuff I've read mind). Stainless ones cost around £170 off ebay.

3. Again not sure but I'd say 10mm or it will look a bit weird with the rears not spaced.

Look forward to more updates

Thanks for the tips mate will see tomorrow if you can still get a GK cam.

Should have some more pictures up tomorrow, the engine will be done by friday and then i just need to do the brakes and clean it up (pictures of that all comming soon as well).

I'm going to use this as my daily while i do a major overhaul on my gt, going to get lots of new bits for that! but i also plan on working on this aswell (have to see how that works out).

Car is looking pimpo!! ;)

Do not buy an ashley exhaust. The manifolds are ok but are mild steel but the exhausts are rubbish. Mine never hung right and was fitted and re fitted and messed with so much and it never was right. Threw it in the bin in the end so no one had to suffer what i went through lol.

Make sure you don't space the fronts too much and leave the rears sat in the arch. Will look rubbish. So 10mm up front i would say to be on the safe side. Then 20mm on the rear :-D

If sticking with the pierburg carb i would not bother with a fancy K&N bolt on thingy. Just get a K&N or similar filter for inside the original housing and get rid of the air intake pipe (one that tapers at the end?!?!?!??) and replace it with something with a bit more diameter and length and end it somewhere with a good cold air amount. Should help it breathe better and with these cold winter mornings coming up you don't want the carb icing up :-)

If you going to clean the engine bay up get the rocker cover and air filter housing cover (dustbin lid) powder coated. Made the wold of difference to my engine bay. Minimal cost and looked 100% better than paint.

Also i think the plastic centre caps (see them a lot on G60 steels) and black bolt covers would look sick with these wheels.

All the best with the engine cleaning!!

Keep up the good work :-)

OK cool no ashley exhaust then.

Had a look at the rears today might space them as well (10mm all round) but looks like i would need to do some arch work! :o

GK cam you can only get from VW's classic parts dept in Germany (like most MK2 parts)

These are the wrong wheels for black plastic caps & bolt covers. the black caps are suppose to clip into the centre of the wheels, those are the wheels for a MK2 Golf CL or GL? where as these wheels are used on the MK2 Golf GTI, Driver, GT, GTD. Ordered these because they are cheaper that the others plus these are in stock at VAG, the only problem is the caps are abit pricey.

UPDATE!!!

The engine is now alive!!! but we have a problem with the oil pressure switch light keeps coming on even though pressure is all good.

Still need to clean it, do the brakes, door, paint boot bumpers rust ETC!!!!!

But more important that all of that i found roof bars!

They are ment to be used on a Audi A4 Avant, but they were old DEAD stock so tryed them to see if they would work and they did, what do you think?

To Do List

2. paint boot

3. fix gearshift

4. repair brakes

5. paint bumpers
