You speak the truth there, but I think the first scenario would be a bit too good of an outcome.

My cousin hit a 15yr/o once on his way back from work, he was completely sober, and I was in the car with him.

We were driving down the road and saw a group of kids walking down the road. One of them ahd a football and was bouncing it along the pavement.

It was a 40 zone andd we were actually doing less than 35mph. all of a sudden (I'm not joking, there was no way of telling he was going to do what he did) the kid with the ball boounces it into the road and runs after it. about 2 metres in front of us. my cousin slams on the brakes, the wheels lock up, the kid looks up and just then it seemed like time stood still. luckily because we were going so slow the kid was only a bit battered and bruised and nothing broken apart from a cracked rib iirc. even though that kid admitted the accident was his fault and that he didnt look down the road, everyyone blamed my cousin. the newspaper printed a small article about it. They called him a 'boy racer' and apparently was driving 'very fast' and was in a 'sports car' (1.4 1996 Escort LS ).

What I'm getting at, is that no matter the circumstances, if you hit someone, its automatically your fault for not paying enough attention.

Even if there was blatantly nothing you could have done, and wasn't breaking any laws or speed limits.

^^ here's wondering how the following scenario would have been if your cousin had been drunk or on drugs..

as MikeyMK said, even if you think you are fine to drive and can control the car.. it's best not to have anything at all. then if a situation does crop up that you can't control (when drunk or sober), at least you've got your own arse covered.

and who knows, maybe having that one pint less will reduce your reaction time by that vital second and end up saving a small kid's life?

from my rather minimal driving experience, i have so far deduced that driving is all about the 'what if's'.. and doing everything possible to prepare for all those what if's, and any eventuality.

to all the people saying they have never drunk driven answer me these q`s

1. when was your last heavy drink ?

2. how much did you drink and from what time ?

3. when did you drive next ?

eg

start at 8 pm drink 7 pints of stella (=21 units of alcohol) finish drinking at midnight . in the 4 hours your body would have got rid of 3 units .

if you go to drive a 9 am the next day , you cant as their is still 9 units in your body , to be under the drink drive limit you would have to wait till 4 pm aprox

very few people know how long it takes to sober up propperly , which is why i believe that the drink drive course should be part of the driving test
