Shoodn't be that expensive got the carbs, manifold, fly wheel, exhaust 16th october. My m8 works for vw in the stores good discount, my father can balance and set up carbs, my local engine specialists will take care of the head about £300 and £300 for the cam kit. Gunna try the standard cam for awhile like you recommend, hopefully get a spare head and leave it with the specialists.

Ide recommend a piper cam. Ran a 285 in mine. Absolute monster it was. Loved it :)

Thing is Ema all the guys are saying that sort of cam is no good for this engine as its a long stroke and you'll ave to rev the beans out of it to get top performance from the cam. I dun really fancy poppin a rod lol can you tell what experiences you had and what difference did the cam make?? Thanks Lv

The rods are well skinny, but throwing one out the block wasn't a concern for me.

Its not the risk of damage that stops you - its simply going against the grain to convert the 1.6 8v for revs, because its tiny head wasn't originally designed to manage the flow of 1600cc.

I was running a ported AEE 8v before, and the simple and economical answer was a 16v conversion.

The exhaust ports of the AFH head are almost double the size of the AEE 8v's, inlet's are bigger than you'll port an 8v's, excellent road cams for factory items - so what's the point in fitting bigger valves etc when you can build/buy a better 16v for less? It cost me £550 to build my 1.6 AFH. It makes no sense in my opinion to spend more on tuning an 8v,hence my last post. And hence,i suspect, there being few performance parts developed for the 8v.

But an 8v can be had for a ton, plus bike carbs bought and fitted for another, and there's its strength - a gutsy 100bhp unit that pulls like a train.. for under £200!

But it's not worth hundreds in investment on top,no way.

I can see were your coming from MikeyMK, i appreciate what your tryin to tell me  But i got my mind set on a AEE. Like you told me earlier in this topic try the standard head, I will.

Its the best small-block 8v head VW have made, they stretched it pretty well and it works well as standard.

And no other engine I've tried sounds as evil on bike carbs as the standard AEE

What difference from the standard 1.6 GT? Or did you never run it with a standard cam and GT injection? How was the fuel system modified to suit?

I dont doubt it'd be better - but is it £300 better?

snapped tappet

still ran though. sounded dreadful but it did run

what could be the cause for the tappet to go????

being a materials engineer..... anything. It looks like there is an inclusion in the metal along the top crack line which probably let it go in the first place.

the rest of it just ripped off with the force of the spring pushing back on it.

Okay m8 we still on for sunday?? me and my father will come down wid a trailer.

sure no problem.

Morning or afternoon?

I'd prefer morning to be honest.

what time m8?

i never ran mine on standard cam. put the 285 straight in.

throttle body was made 2mm bigger, de-wedged and a chip, also ran golf gti injectors and afm.

cam kicked in about 2000rpm and pulled to 7.

i ran an 8p box but then it was swapped back to gt box when the lad bought it, coz thats how he wanted it.

each to their own and you'll do what you think is right, if i made another one, ide put that cam in it. it went really well and sounded awesome!!

pick up my AEE today and stripped it to find just more than the tappet shattered :( cam is also nackered, pistons are nackered due to previous belt failure and smashing all 8 valves in to them. Will post sum pix up tomoz, anyways the build will go on!! over the next few weeks gunna order new pistons, rings, bearings, shells and seal kit from VW also after a piper cam kit.

To be fair what Mikey has said is absolutely true. Its not a conversion I would do for going all out on its more of a cheap 100bhp+ also did you get the engine from a breakers with all that damage? Your better off getting a working one for £100. My Abu is from a 1992 car with 140k and I have given it so much abuse it should be broken but its fine, so in that respect you might want to consider the costs of a rebuild when there are plenty of engines available.

I would rather rebuild it becoz its a hobby and i kw i ain't gunna ave any problems in the future. I bought it off a guy on ere but i am pretty sure he didn't kw what was wrong with it internally. Rebuilt is gunna cost bout £1000 including the cam kit. But i kw it is gunna be A1 condition then. I am going all out on this car as by the way, Full paint job in march, roll cage, sub frame, coilovers, retrim ect ect its just a work in progress. :D

^ Can fault you dedication dude.

Hope it works out well for you.

Got the quote for my engine internals yesterday. Consists of pistons, rings, main shells, big ends, small ends and oil pump. Came to a staggering £550. Did have second thoughts for a short while but i was going to pay £600 for a recon engine and i wouldn't kw whats been renewed and what cheap sh*t they have put inside. Also there is the courier charge which is round £90. Still gota get the cam kit and a complete gasket and seal set. Will be ordering everything in about 2weeks then the rebuild begins :D

Holy foook monkeys that's alot of dough.

So what are we saying here, the standard 1.6 8v head cant be ported? I'm taking mine to be looked at on monday :?
