Just made some enquiries about getting these refurbed

and got the response

"I am afraid once these split rims become this corroded they will not come apart. The bolts almost always snap when taking them out to split the wheels. So I am afaid we would not take this job on. Sorry about this"

I would have thought that being titanium they shouldnt snap too easily, is this the case?

Rather puts me off attempting a DIY refurb!

There's no guarantee that the bolts will snap. When I refurbed my BBS they were just as corroded as yours! The bolts came out fine.

some tips.

BUY SOME LOCKING WHEELS NUTS, chavs will drool over nicking these

try soaking the bolds with wd40 over night ( not sure if u can access the bolts easier from behind?)

Tap the Allen keys with a rubber hammer, dont force them by hand, quick taps will less likey snap the bolts.

Dont thread the Bolt heads, quite simply removing damage bolts will more than likly make you wheels even worse.

mattpolo what kinda shite are you talking?!

the bolts are m8 spline type. you need a good quality 1/2" drive ratchet to remove these effectively. when i did mine i used a halfords pro 1/2" ratchet and halfords spline drive set. (Dont use cheap tools, as they will damage the bolts)

I've split my wheels twice now and have yet to break a bolt. I did have to drill one out from where someone had used an incorrect tool and mangled the bolt head though.

with all the bolts removed, tap the wheel centre from the back with a rubber mallet and it will pop out.

they look like allen key heads in the picture.... and dont use cheap tools lol??? you went halfords

as i said, wd40 will help a bit, pretty sure it wont react to the paint, and you are refurbing them so it wont matter :)

and the only thing i said wrong was "allen". and taping rather than forcing is better in anyway shape or form.

They are M8 spline drive bolts and I have a metrinch 1/2 drive ratchet.

Just wondered if the impact might help, I'll stick to the ratchet then

don't hit shit if your trying to undo it, its better to use a breaker bar ect on the tool to give you more leverage and more control over the force that your applying to the tool/nut/bolt ect.

a slight tap to the top of the nut will help to shock it loose so to speak, but trying to undo some thing by putting an allen key in it and trying to hit it round is asking for trouble tbh.

their pro range of tools are pretty good. wd40 will do naff all to loosen the bolts, as they are fitted with a locking compound, which wd will not touch.

I had a set that were totally wrecked and I think I snapped about 4/5 bolts. Even when they snap they seem to snap right at the head so you can still get the centre out. Then there is enough exposed to get a decent set of mole grips on and free up.

eh? rx2's are 2 piece splits. so theres no nut on the other side.

wd40 is a water displacement fluid. Its not ideal for removing bolts. better off with plus gas AND some heat

If they snap, its no biggy, you can get stud/screw extractors. just drill a hole down the middle of the bolt shaft and use the extractor.

They should be ok though. If there same torque as my schmidts its 22ftlb. A good size breaker bar and a good fit spline socket!

When you tighten them back up, make sure you do opposites and check the torque after youve gone around....the ones you 1st tightened wont be at full torque.

I bought a set of these off here - seems me and the seller have different ideas of good condition (he seemed to think that a shit paint job over the original and dented polished lips was good condition) so they needed a refurb. I got a fair few out of one wheel but the last four seem to be a lost cause. I've tryed every trick in the book, or at least every trick in my book: heated em till they glowed, tapped them in the top, cant get extra leverage with a bar as you cant get enough pressure on the top to stop the spline bit jumping out and threading the bolt. Any other tricks or am i gonna have to drill them out and throw more money at these mediocre-at-best wheels by replacing 40 odd bolts?

why don't you have a go at refurbing them yourself, i always do mine, saves loads of money too
