I'm 20 with 3 years driving behind me - yes still learning and all the rest of it. But by no means an inexperienced driver, and more to the point i dont brag about how fast I've been and ask stupid questions about what other cars i could beat......Which there seems to be a lot of on here of late

It would be the people pushing beyond the limits of their skills/car that would worry me.

On a proper organised day that should be fine. There should be enough space for you to get it a bit wrong and go off into the kittie litter by a small amount (except Combe, that's a proper mans circuit with no litter and HARD barriers!). Ideally you should build up your speed and confidence as the day progresses rather than going out all guns blazing from the get go. People who do push it too hard and keep going off should get cautioned and told to cool it or get thrown off the circuit.

i'm not perfect either. Been sideways afew times on slippery/icy roads but managed to recover - just.

I get taught from my mate whos described as loony behind the wheel but a damn good teacher, especially in the icy conditions

IIRC, a track day thread came up quite a while ago but no-one seemed to be interested because of the price. I looked into too when i was a mod but the prices were so high to rent a track that i gave up.

People like Hayesey who've done afew track days maybe better filling us in on the nitty gritty of it all.

I think i remember last time that it was mentioned the idea of karting came up - that could be a much better alternative :) Noones car will risk getting damaged that way, and they can be just as fun

VW Driver Mag have a day at Combe in July every year. They will do a Polo only session if enough people are interested. The Corrado Club did one this year. Think it's about £30 for a 15 min session + £10 to hire a lid if you don't have one.

I'll be down at that one in the Golf all day and anyone who wants a passenger ride is more than welcome.

surely a gd few ppz would need to learn the rules of the track etc, eg what side to move over to when letting people past etc etc.

I'm only 17 but have a fair idea whats acceptable when going for it on track.

and not all young people are bad or stupid. theres many of experienced drivers who couldnt drive on a track

a club track day would be a laugh but I seriously doubt there'd be enough people who would actually turn up to make it financially viable. The best bet would be to hire an old airfield and then layout a track with cones etc... but it's not quite the same and you still need a decent turn out to cover the costs.

You can get open pit full days for as little as £99 at some tracks in the "off" season (i.e. winter), you're gambling with the weather really but then again you are no matter what time of year these days!

I'm at oulton park next week again, should be good if it's dry. It's the first one I'll have done since fitting the turbo (as I didn't want to do one till I'd had it properly remapped) so will be interesting.

Here's a video to whet your appetites, it's filmed inside marshalls turbo g40 and from about 1:25 into the vid he's following me, my car still had the g-lader then and was prob about 155-160bhp so his is faster on the straights but his lacks the subframe & diff mine has which you can see in the corners. This was a oulton park again last year on the PPC magasine track day.

As you can see in the video you get a right mix of cars there, ranging from fiat unos, rover 25s, sheddy bmws to 911 GT3s, race prepped lancia deltas, Ultima GTRs the full range really. So as well as the track action you get to have a butchers at some tasty machinery in between too.

I'd encourage anyone who is interested to go and do a novice day, it's a bit less intimidating as everyone there is (in theory) a novice and they put cones on the track to mark braking points and the apex of corners. They also tend to be cheaper which is nice.

I've been to one of those CGTI days at curborough a few years ago, it's a good day out but it's just not the same as a proper track day with lots of cars to play with. Not that you are allowed to race at a track day but still...

Karting was my idea. As for the track day, if theres enough people who'd turn up, i'd look into it.

the best bet would be to just find a track day organised by one of the normal companies (MSV, Bookatrack, Javellin, Focussed Events etc...etc...) and then just all book it together nice & early while there's plenty of space left. Then it doesn't really matter how many people are up for it.

Just to going back to what somebody said earlier, FWD are good fun at track days. So chuckable and controllable, not like a Caterham or Elise that I've driven. Had a Saxo VTR for a short while and did 2/3 track days in it, was a lot of fun and I couldn't see myself ever spinning it.

RWD is another story, pretty unpredictable and commands a lot of control and feel from the driver which I guess will come with experience, as RWD will let go at any minute with too much power et cetera. Feels awesome when you get it right though.

I think hillclimbing is a good way to get into actually competing in motorsport, went to watch cars/bikes at Oliver's Mount up Scarborough way last year. You can see a lot of them are beginners and therefore it's pretty relaxed. As said before it's just you and the timed section of track so you're in control of your destiny, no blaming somebody else.

when i get my gti i would love a track day not much point in my 6n 1L but do like the idea of getting an old airfield for the day but it would need to be well run and organised

my dad was a firefighter for 30 years, he's shown me a few things from his advanced driving courses along the way,

mind, he did them in a 13 tonne fire engine and I'd be on the track in a 1 litre polo!

if it happened it would probably be a good idea for everyone to save up for some new tyres for afterwards...

Wondered where you meant to begin with. Louths about 1hr from me but quite good. I might try to get some details from them for future reference. I haven't been up that way in a while although it isntthat far from where my grandad lives (Caistor).

My mates found an airfileld (WW2 runway) near Boston they used to rag up and down although not legally

FWD cars are great for track days. I've seen well driven <100bhp polo put cars with twice as much power to shame. For first timer you can see FWD as a distinct advantage due to the safe handling aspect.

A track day is all about having fun in and environment thats as safe as it can be. Most of the track are very safe with wide tarmac and nice run offs. Drivers can push their own and cars limits and on all track days people run out of skill but the in the vast majority of occasions they spin/run on the grass and then carry on and learn from what happened.

Also some people drive like dicks.. especially when they see a ikle polo in their mirror, you just remember the car and avoid them. Simples :)

I've done lots of track days with www.mazdaontrack.co.uk ranging from Curborough sprint days, Silverstone Car control days and full on track days and they have always been great. I know 3 other guys from here who have been on their track days as well. What I've found on these days is these guys don't have big egos or something to prove just lots of people who just want to have fun and then be able to drive their car home at the end of it.

I've spoken to the mazda-on-track guys before and they would be very happy to have a few more polos to keep the mazda's company so I am sure that something can be arranged with them for next year. So if the CP board would would like me to pass on some contact details please just let me know.

I've just sent Manby motorplex an Email to see what their prices are like. They seem to have lots of tarmac roads and large concrete areas which could be used for time trials and maybe a short circuit?

I'd be up for a track day or karting day. When I had a Fiat Bravo, the owners club had a yearly karting day down south. Camped at a nearby site, and did the karting on a saturday afternoon, with a barbecue back at the campsite in the evening.

for the cost of hiring out silverstone or combe on a week day id rather go germany and go round the nurgburg few times lol
