2011 (i know its a long way away) and I'm going to organise a club polo based trip to the ring

Its more than just a track day I guess though.

I'm definatly up for this, if i still have a polo by then

for the cost of hiring out silverstone or combe on a week day id rather go germany and go round the nurgburg few times lol

Swings and roundabouts though. At a UK trackday you'll get far more time on track for your £'s.

The ring is awesome but I'm avoiding it until all the insurance issues are fully dealt with as I'm not up for losing my house over some bent barriers.

With the ring I find its the whole experience of it not just the track time. But the track time is epic as well. The only think that has come close is Bovington and Cadwell.

As for insurance for us UK people it will never be covered by any insurance on a tourist day. Driving it like a B road and not being daft helps as does a Credit Card just in case!! :-D

Problem is I don't have a credit card with a £5K+ limit to cover the costs of something going badly wrong and even if I did I wouldn't risk it as it would financially cripple me for several years.

The last trip I did the wife came with me and did 15laps. Which I thought was rather impressive!

Ha ha ha ha. I tried getting Mrs Horney behind the wheel of the track car but at 4' 11" she can't see over the dash

I cannot see a go karting getting much interest due to the fact that we are spread all over the country, therefore i doubt people would travel for hours and hours just to go go-carting, however i think a track weekend would work. I would say i would be up for it, but due to only being in college atm i don't know if i have the money.

So the jist of it is..

Everyones Skint/wastes their student loan on booze

Everyones a liability on the road

Polos handle badly

Everyone lives all over.

i would love to do a track day but not in my polo, it would have to be somthing quick and light maybe vxr220 or a rx7. FWD cars i can imagne being really boring to drive around a track .

You don't need a fast car or a RWD car to enjoy a trackday. It's not a race after all, it's about exploring the limits of both you and the car in question. FWD cars are brilliant on track, I've overtaken enough Porches and Lotus's in my MKII Golf. You only need RWD if you want some drift action and a lot of trackdays will black flag you for any of that tom foolery. There are drift days though if that's your bag.

tbh iv never been on a track but I'm just gussing from playing forza motor sport alot, the FWD cars seem to be boring and full of understeer things like the r8 or any 4WD car are spot on for handleing if you hit the right lines but imo the RWD car takes alot more skill to drive fast, there for makeing it more of a challange and more fun to drive but I'm just basing all this on forza lol so dont listen to me

Yeah, get good on the track in a real FWD car first mate. Even low powered hatchbacks can have nasty accidents.

Really? What kind of prices they charge? Couple us at college were thinking about doing some karting, we were going to go to the one over Durham.

Yeah, the ring really isn't just about the track time.

The drive there, the problems, the sights, the roads, the other cars.

Then there's the camping for a week, the bonfires, the BBQ's, too much drinking (only on certain nights, as driving the ring the day after isn't wise at all)

All the stuff to do, Ring o'Works (sp) museum thingy, the shopping trips, random missions to places for no reason

The ring car park is epic in its own right, its like being at a car show. GT3 RS's, M3's, GTR's, crazily modded hatchbacks, R8's... the list goes on.

The ring itself, probably the most fun you will ever have in your polo. It honestly is epic (even in my standard MK3 1.3 spi haha!)

Then there's the people there too, the ladiesss :p. There love for anything VW (modded dubs everywhere)

Friends you make on the trip, friends for life!

The downsides are though, if you break down its not good. When my exhaust fell off i was scared. Just because its so far from home and you know no1.

The costs if you slip up on the ring, they can indeed be crippling. Just don't push it too hard and you will be fine. Try not to break down on the ring either, as just getting recovered off there could completely ruin your holiday (money wise).

Luckily, the good bits outweigh the bad bits

Blagging a ride round the ring in a GT3 RS for the price of a lap (22E) has got to be reason enough to go.

Just approach people on the car park and someone will take you round if you offer to pay for the lap. That all I did!

Iv heard that Sunderland way one is pretty damn good, and well priced for the track time you get! Want to go there sometime!

Been to Durham one a few times, and although it was good when i was 14, i cant see the small indoor track being as thrilling now!

Think the skill is generally in working within the limitations of the car. I've done the odd lap on 250cc commuter bike, yeah, I'd got Superbikes leaving me for dead, but I still had the challenge of picking the lines to the bikes capabilities, choosing braking and accelerating points etc.

THe thing with GT and Forza etc is they don't offer any feedback through the controller. They're good for learning layouts but that's about it. It's really easy to approcah a corner flat out in a game where you went get hurt if it goes wrong, very hard to fight the fear of injury when doing it in real life. Also they don't take into acount surface changes, little lumps and bumps etc. No matter what car you do a real track day in you get an insane buzz. The first one I ever did was in a 65bhp mini and when I cam in after the first session my legs and hands were shaking I was buzzing that much. Been hooked ever since.
