Does my 1.0 L 6N have an air filter/intake sensor?

Featured Replies

Hey,

I've bought and am hoping to fit a cheap ripspeed universal cone air filter from Halfords on my 1999 T reg 1.0 L 6N. I know it wont make much difference to power, but just wanted the extra noise and to be able to see it in the engine bay. I've tried to set up a couple of topics but haven't got a huge response...I've found out the best way to fit it is to remove the airbox completely and then fit the filter by connecting it to a pipe connected to the air intake...either using an elbow, or could i simply put the pipe straight on using a jubilee clip? Would this work?

I'm also worried about whether there is a sensor within the system and if I could cause any damage fiitting the filter. This is really important...

Has anyone fitted a cone filter or induction kit before to their 6n...how did you do it? Photos would be greatly appreciated,

Please help, otherwise it looks like I'll be getting my money back at Halfords.

Thank you,

Mark

orite mate, haven't ever worked on a 6n before but on my mk3, i just took out the existing ring filter , (probably a panel filter on a newer car) and then started it up like that, it sounded alot better but then obviously had no element to filter the air coming through the intake so i just attatched a bit of alliminium ducting on the end of the air box and then a nice shiny K&N , it looks sick, filters the air just the same and doesnt increase the tempreture of the air coming in, sounds good and you haven't lost any of the air box etc with your air flow metres in.

Hope this helps.

By fitting this you would lose the engines inlet air temp vacum switch which is mounted on your standard air box. This controls the release of warm air from your exhaust manifold into the inlet tract to aid with cold running. You will also need to control the crankcase ventilation which would ordinarily breath into the base of your air box. An oil breather filter can be used on the end of the pipe to achieve this.

Vw designed this system to give your engine the best power/economy balance and the best service life. I'm not sure why you would want to change this to potntially lose performance and make your car sound like a vacum cleaner?

Leave it stock mate, id trust VW design over s**tspeed anyday!

Oh best put the obligatory 'IMO' :p

Ian.

iv noticed no differance performace but alot in sound, why would it make a car sound like a dyson? i dont understand what your getting at, Also , by leaving the air box still intact but just removing the ring filter and putting a K&N on the end , no sensors are lost, and neither is the breather for the crankcase. It looks alright and costs fuck all.

So you have the cone filter on the end of your standard empty air box? I'm sorry I'm unable to see any sound reasoning behind wanting to do this, both aesthetically and practically. Just my opinion mind :)

exactly , so why you bothered lol?

Take the ring filter out to increase air flow, and put in a K&N on the end of the cool air ducting.

Whats wrong with that? Makes a good noise when i put my foot down , hasnt changed MPG , hasnt decreased perfomance, looks good,

Whats the prob?

Thats what I was thinking of doing, removing the existing filter and the pipe coming out of the air box, attaching a slightly smaller pipe with a jubilee clip and then connecting the air filter on to that. I think that would have looked nice enough for a road car, but then my worries were about the vent by the left wing...would this just become useless? Then, I thought would the cone filter that is supposed to be sucking in cool air, start sucking in warmer air becuase it will be coming from within the engine bay rather than from under the car by the wing. Then that could bugger up any sensor or switch...couldnt it?

Max, have you got a photo of your Mk3 engine bay? Might help a bit...

Thank yoou,

Apologies.

yep ill get one mate, Bit dark though aint it. Bascially , on the end of the cool air ducting iv put some ducting going to a cool spot , then put a K&N on the end , and took out the existing filter. Make sure the K&N is somwhere where its not gonna get wet or dirty, or even suck in warmer air that yours is at the moment. Its abit of a bodge but bolt on air filters allways are.

In the future I'm just gonna sack all of the air box assembly and fit a Golf Air flow metre with the K&N , this has all the relavant brather pipes and sensors.

Sounds like what I'll have to do, but could someone show me a more effective / less bodged way of doing it using VW parts? (No offence intended to Gozzard ^^).

lol none taken , i no its abit of a bodge , but i found it works just as good as a golf AFM , but doesnt look as good. Go to a scrappy and look under a golfs bonnet and see if it has the elbow still intact.

I replaced the ring filter with the cone K&N jst becuase i had the bits layin about tbh. But then it worked so kept it.

If someone could provide a very clear picture of the part I'm after that would be great :). Cheers for the info Gozzard ^^.

what part are you after mate?

This is tricky...it's more complicated than I thought it would be...I thought I could simply and easily take out the filter thats there and fit the cone filter...but I'm just worried if i removed the whole air box and did it, I'd have a problem with sensors and it would just be taking in warmer air.

dont do it then and do what iv done mate.

air filters confuce me, iv been waiting for a tread like this. iv got a 6n2 (think it should be almost the same lay out as a 6n) did u find theres about 3 or 4 things conected to the air box/plastic piping? what is that one at the bottom thats connected to the engine, what shell i do with that? x

what part are you after mate?

The golf parts I need to fit onto my Polo :).

i think the 1 litre engines in 6n's are the same as 6n2s?

i just removed all of the air box, got some B+Q piping, K+N cone filter.

put the piping directly to the air intake, stabbed a few holes in the piping for the breathers ect. jubile clip on the K+N at the end.

Felt no improvment in perfomance + response.

[ after i got bored of the induction noise i put it back to stock and found the the engine made funny farting noises and iratic idling.

Believe to be ECU problems.]

( Vacume noise : he means the heavy sucking noise when jabbing your accelerator ) sounds gay imo.

Sorry.

got bored today so i took my ram air off and drilled my stock air box. i think it sounds better and theres no lose pipes. x

lol i woudlnt advise keeping it like that mate.

how come? x

changin the whole point of the sealed airbox , plus you'l be lettin in shitloads of warm air and probably dust n all sorts.

hahaha well it was a fun experience doing it.... tomoro my project will be changing it back haha. x

The only way you'll get it on is to do what people have said and ditch your old airbox, and fit some pikey pipework straight to the throttle body. If i were you i'd just go back to halfrauds and get a refund. VW didn't spend thousands of pounds and many man hours designing the airbox to be as efficient as possible for nothing ;)
