I'm having great problems fitting an aftermarket stereo into my 08 Bluemotion Polo.

Wanted something that would integrate with my iPhone for music and also something with DAB provided it worked but was willing to sacrifice the latter. Would also like to route my iPhone through my speakers for calls as the handsfree kit I have on my GPS isn't really loud enough for me to make out some of the finer intonations of my girlfriend’s thick black country accent a lot of the time.

Asked after such an option at the dealership when I went in for a service but they weren't too keen and said I could get it done at a car audio specialist. Surprisingly, despite residing in Essex I've been unable to find a locate a decent one so I popped into Halfords who oddly seemed to know what they were doing and recommended this Sony MEX-BTU3700U unit which does Bluetooth music streaming and calls from the iPhone. They stopped doing DABs because pants reception meant people kept bringing them pack apparently. Sony unit has LW so at least I can get the cricket but still interested to know if car DAB is feasible yet.

The guy was fairly confident he could fit it so after parting with a sizable amount of cash for various adaptors I rocked up to have it fitted. Several minutes later the Halfords guy comes back to explain that the plastic casing he's ordered to house the aftermarket unit doesn't work in my Bluemotion because unlike any other Polo of that era the stereo is from the previous version. Apparently all the new ones use the same one as the Golf but the Bluemotion is different.

No problem though he says because all I need is to get my dealer to order a ‘universal DIN pocket’ for this model of Bluemotion then they will be able to fit. Apparently they can’t order this bit because it’s not on their stock list.

So I ring the dealer and pop by this morning on my way into work to pick it up only to be told that they can’t get that part or that they can but they don’t want to because they’re not sure and if they get the wrong one they can’t send them back. This is a blooming registered VW dealer by the way.

I guess at least everyone’s being honest with me and admitting they’re not sure but aside from a plastic fitting to actually house the radio the guy in Halfords reckons he can take care of the rest. Failing that I’ve got a mind to trade in my Polo for a Golf with it all built in although I appreciate that’s quite an extreme method just so I can listen to the cricket and link in my iPod.

Tape measure is telling me the current unit occupies a space of just under 19cm x 11.5cm. Does anyone know where I could source a universal DIN pocket to fit in that slot? Also, by chance does anyone know of any decent car audio places in Essex who might be a bit more accommodating?

Theres a couple of specialists around Stortford, u've got AudioFile near the Stortford rugby club and Just ICE in Bushfair Harlow

you should not need a facia to fit a stereo into your car can you post a pic of your dash

I'm pretty sure it's the former, it's certainly not the latter one. I don't have the Bluey with me today but I'll post a pic when I can just to verify.

If I don't need a facia then what do I need to do? Do I just use the existing one and pop out that bit in the middle that looks the same size as a standard stereo unit?

I have a feeling I may be popping over to Colchester to see you soon. Will be popping over that way shortly for other business anyway.

indeed all you need to do is pop out the original plug in the iso adapter and an aerial adapter and away you go

As above should fit straight in and just need a din cubby box to finish it off, easy job if you know what your doing but thats not Hafrauds though.

I fitted that Sony unit in my wifes 6N2 a few weeks back and she loves it.
