  • I didn't take it to RR as it wasn't gonna be finished in time and i didn't wanna rush it. Brakes and suspension all went smoothly but the engine is a new build and a few changes have been made to elec

  • So, finally got the 7in rims on, at et19 i think, still with 185/60s (went for Proxes CF2 this time). Moody monday weather but i had to take it to the kart track entrance for the latest incarnation of

  • Sorting this was tricky, as our roads are either 30mph or bypasses (i cut short of the bypass run, as it was too busy to show anything useful). But you get the idea. Of course, driving around at idle

Ye, have to say it sits very well and I'm sure its really nice ride too, decent tyres that FIT, decent width wheels, just lovely :-)

Fixed yet???

Cheers lads, yeah i like the way some of these look on proper rims with some lows, i've researched everything from Saxo coilies to high offset 8x13s, but in the end i just warm to the look i think the car should have had from factory, and how i'd like to think it would have had if a 1.6 16v S was available at the time. The tyres and stance are pure XR2 but for the back not squatting enough..

Nick - It's now Mot'd, if that's what you mean :-D

But i'm not entirely happy with it. The flip profile cam seems to work in sound, but it doesn't seem to equate to power. The ignition is still set for the lower rev range but this should still be fine on overlap, doesn't seem to give more power than a static set up though - it's certainly got no more in it than the 1.6 AFH did and doesn't feel as lively. Okay i suppose, but not the better engine i was hoping for, and not worth having a switched pedal.

Think i'm gonna go with the 100bhp 1.4 head, but instead of the AFH, i'll use all AVY wear parts to run the later head (got one from a 9n Sport). This effectively then a roller rocker static 1.6 16v with sport cams, probably not quite as strong as the AFH but close. And it all fits off the shelf. And i've never done it, so..

This'll happen maybe next week when i fit the long ratio gearbox in place of the GTi one currently in it - at least i've tested the GTi one now and it's sweet, so that'll be for sale. Not sure what to do with the AVY head, i think it'll work better with programmable ignition but i don't know if i wanna go into it, when i was happy with a static twink and dizzy. So that might go too.

Nice work mikey, meant to have a chat at poloshow but i was in a right state.

Still haven't seen this car!

So you got the engine back together then after the issues lol? :)

Bit of a shame about the engine really, be interesting to try the setup you've mentioned above though I guess.

You gonna bring it to action?

And yeah max, you are a disgrace

Nick :-(

I was only about a few hours sunday, lame effort really - considering i lived like 15 mins away.

More than i can say for action though, not looking good because i just don't have any time atm. I'm having to turn down some work etc, so i can't see me justifying it.

Arrr damn, poor effort dude.

Hey. Hey you.

You've done some things, and not updated! Do you not do the build thread section in general? Haha.

I'm surprised you havnt updated this and hit the rest of the section hard in your home time boredom!

I haven't bothered, as nothing much has changed.

Yeah it's MoT'd now but it's still not taxed because i didn't see the point when i broke my foot, and i was told that'll be december earliest i'll be putting weight on it.

So for now it looks pretty sorry for itself because the new long ratio gearbox is in the boot (sold the GTi one), replaced the VVT for static 9n cams, i'll put a couple of pics up when it's out on the street.

But even then i'll have to go easy on the cosmetics for some time to come because i just don't have time to play about with it these days. Apart from adding a little stripe to sport it up a bit..

It's a shame because it can look alright, i've just been looking through some folders for a pic to put forward for the calendar, and i can't really find anything. I thought to put in maybe a seasonal one such as autumn and winter..

I find i forget about some pictures, many died on my old laptop or phones but with others i know they've been on here but i don't know where or when..

And the thing was rarely washed or polished even when i did stop for a shot, because that's not how it usually rolled..

But now those alloys are gone, and i think i've only got a couple of shots on it's steels (including this one of me messing about with colour)..

It'd be nice of me to get it seen in it's Red Bull livery because i don't intend to run it permanently, but it's in bits with the engine hanging out and sorting it isn't an immediate priority. So it's missed the season and now the calendar topic. Fail.

The wife is going back to work though, so i do need it for the winter. It's not going into the calendar vote then, but i will make an effort to get a few proper pics up in the next few weeks - i ain't missing out on this year's opportunity to do this..

Very nice what you doing there! The engine tricks are awesome. Once I put my afh in and get tired of it I may do that when it comes time for rebuilt!

Cheers Joe, yeah I only used crank and rods to convert the AFH to a 1.6 and it made for a great engine.

Well it's taken longer than i hoped, but it's all in order now. I'd fell so far out of love with the thing i almost gave up on it. Not happy with the prospect of stock VVT management i considered going back to AFH, but that'd mean pulling the block out and engineering it for the pulley again. Having just put the gearbox in, i'd had enough. Everything seemed to be against me, i was having no luck and i had no time.

But once i decided on the 9n head for it i knew it had to be done. Going from there, everything started falling into place with no problems. Found a way to make a factory tubular 4-1 manifold & downpipe without a cat, got the motivation back, and started feeling the idea again. Now i finally look forward to having it back in daily use.

Red Bull style livery is a bit of a laugh and is temporary, though i'll get it seen at an event or two before removing it (sticker on the rear quarter was printed on a white background for some stupid reason, this will be sorted). I'm still working on a permanent stripe design without a corporate theme.

This car is awesome, although I can't keep up with the engines as I'm currently reading all your old threads about carbs, AFH and sorts.

Top work though and good write ups, cheers

I love this car Mikey, don't lose the love!

Top work mikey,

Get it to some shows ffs!

Cheers all, I was having problems with ally cylinder blocks 2.5 years ago and was getting the hump then because blue exhaust smoke was embarrassing. I took it off the road and had a busy time with other things. Two years of dull modern cars in addition and I'm losing the will to live as I feel I've grown up too much. Married life with baby turning me into an old man.. So I kjust might fail to take to it.

I really hope not, I hope it gives me a good slap around the face, reminds me that travelling can be fun, and I think it will. I haven't driven it yet as its not taxed, but it should be as good as the AFH version, even though I'm being sensible with the carb settings. It doesn't need to be fast anymore anyway, it never really did, so even if its only got 120bhp it'll still be enough for me now :smirk:

Having put it back on the road and had one hell of a sobering giggle restraining it, i can confirm i have had no problems swiftly converting back into an alpha driver! It scares me what a sheep the TDi turned me into, I don't know how I didn't run anyone over in that Golf and its zero sense of occasion.

Speaking of, i do still need to get to grips with the lack of a brake servo, though..

Fun right? Lol, the brakes on G573VNS scared the shit out of me first time I used them.

Are you taking this to some shows this year then mikey?

If i've gotta stop fast, i can get it stopped fast. Big calipers/pads and 200mm drums sort that. Vented discs mean it's always there.

The problem is casual braking, i forget i have a lot of pad surface for the pedal to press down with no assistance.. So it's like, yeah right turn here, so i give it the usual lazy half effort and expect the car to do it all for me, but oh we don't wanna slow for that right turn then ay? Next right turn good for you, then..?

Yeah, need to remember the pedal isn't made of plastic and will do the job - as long as i'm prepared to put some more effort in than the lazy driver's heavy assistance i've been treated to has allowed until now.

Modern cars maketh a lazy driver.

Max - Spring fest is the first one i'm making an exception for, i'll see from there.
