bottom end was up for sale for 200 quid, and the entire engine for 350 which was a bargain that noone wanted, so its all good in the end! engine was free anyway =D

You only had to fit the GTi shells to make the AFH healthy again.

To lock the engine with the sump off,i just wedged a wooden hammer handle in there.

haha =P no i'll be trying to mate a mk3 polo box to it tomorrow but i have to remove a lug and a bit of webbing for the extra mounting point on the lupo box, the starters on the front of the boxs, more akin to the big block golf engines

genius! i'll bear that in mind for next time, but i fancied a bit of a challenge =] plus when I'm done the afh block is coming to the house and i can explore what was gwarning in there!

Anyway some pics,

The lupo block has an extra lug for the gearbox, as the starter mounts on the front of these engines

the relay roller

part number 036109244

the guys made me a bar threaded to 10mm at one end to fit into the block and 8mm to fit through the sleeve of the roller, it was impossible to drill through for guys with thousands of pounds worth of machinery so dont bother trying it at home, I'm glad i didnt bother!

cambelt fitted and everything timed up, engine plate and alternator fitted

I didn't have a 9mm 12 sided socket in the end so swapping clutch and flywheel over and getting the starter fitted are tomorrows tasks, hopefully its a go-er and then i can mission on at getting it all fitted in zee bay.

I'm glad i've got another car to potter around in now or id be buggered!

whipped the lupo clutch and flywheel off, and offered up the flywheel cover up.

the brevity of the situation became known

DSC02732.jpg

holy moly

DSC02734.jpg

so a little fettling later

DSC02745.jpg

space was cleared for the starter motor - mk4 flywheel fitted here

DSC02747.jpg

here with the mk3 flywheel

DSC02749.jpg

the lupo gearbox flanges dont sit so close to the sump, as the mk3/4 polo gearboxes to, and so this was in the way!

DSC02740.jpg

so I've had to swap it out for the afh sump, but it unfortunatly doesnt fit properly and its not possible to tickle the lupo sump slightly to aid clearance as its walls are too thin.

so i need to don my thinking cap and do some research.

also as the lupo flywheel is larger than both the mk3/4s i dont think the box will fit with the two two bolt holes, as its slightly off centered compared to its location on the afh block.

hmmm =/

Looks like its coming on nicely bro 8-)

Missed you at the RR day, but il catch up with you soon  Cant wait to see this running :p

Good stuff blud! I guess there'd be no way to clamp the central part of that roller in order to drill it, but this little sleeve sounds cool!

alright arun,

there was a way to grip the beast, but even with the beastiest drill at thier disposal, it merely just tickled the surface and wouldnt make a dent, so they put there heads together for 5 and came up with a turned down threaded rod which is tres perfect for my needs!

aye I'm hoping it comes along soon, but I'm no real rush now, so ill just get all the little jobs done that i've been meaning to for ages, (change the front calipers, rebuild rear brakes, fit lowering top caps, rip carpets out and hunt down the leaks)

if the mk3 box wont fit the lupo block, then ill just use the lupo gearbox and it can go in the mk1 olop.

motherlickers. anyway going to have a break for a few days as I've just got that army of two for the xbox! woop

  • 2 weeks later...

Reading through this now..there must be a way 2 fit a lupo gearbox to a mk4 polo...i was looking at my mates earlyer and the gearbox mounts look the same..plus a lupo chassis is kind of the same as a polo :/...mate of mine seems 2 think it will fit with abit of modifying...and its not like he doesnt know what he is talking about, he has built a mk2 golf 16v turbo pushing 350 bhp..Any one know of it being done with a lupo bottom end? cheers

nah mate it wont fit, it might fit a polo bottom end.

the mk3 and 4 flywheels fit fine, as do the clutches, which allow the gearbox to slip over, it wont fit over the lupo gti flywheel. but theres a couple of problems i found.

the os driveshaft flange in blocked from getting into the right position because of the sump, it has extra webbing and slighty different design to the afh sump, i tried to grind the webbing down to make enough room but cut thru the sump, its too thin.

the afh sump pattern doesnt match the lupo gti block, so they are not interchangable, but provided enough clearance for the gearbox to fit on with both the mk3 and mk4 flywheel.

then theres the catch, only two holes line up with the block, the top two, but they are just by say 5mm too high to get the two bolts in. i was just going to run it pikey styles if i could get at least those two in, but tis a no go.

going to run the original lupo 5 speed box now mate, and stick the engine in my mk1 polo as thats already had a custom mount fitted to accept the gearbox, was adapted a few years back my aw tracksport, pics in the thread in the members gallery

info was scarse about the original convo

edit: if it does tho, please let me know, as i would well rather run a mk3 box! but lucky to have the choice of both with the mk1

don't quote me on this but isn't the polo GTI sump different to the lupo one ?

not too sure my hairy northern friend, thats a job for etka

then make it so my mancurian stoner friend.

I meant using a lupo bottom end with a lupo gearbox and then using a afh head in a mk4 polo...

  • 3 weeks later...

sorry for bumping up an old thread, but i thought i'd just say that the whole business of a stepped stud for the belt idler is unecessary, if you use a idler from a 1.6 with avy engine code it will go straight on becuase it has a 10mm hole through the centre

  • Author

no worries mate for bumping it, updates on the engine is in my mk1 polo thread in the members gallery.

unfortunatly the one from the AVY can't be used, the cam-belt is thinner on the Mk5 & Lupo Engine, and therefore the AFH belt wont correctly in the idler pulley.

thanks tho

if i was do it again, id use the polo bottom end

If you use the Polo 6n 1.9D gearbox it'll bolt to the Golf/Lupo block. The petrol starter measures to fit, close as it may be to the gearbox mount box section of the chassis.

I dont know the biggest clutch you can use. The diesel clutch is 180mm. I think the flywheel can take 190,or be machined for 200,but i really dont know as I've taken little interest when I've had one.

Still, its pointless buying all this when you can just buy a Polo 1.4 block and put the Lupo 1.6 internals in it..

Sorry to start my post like this, but YOU STUPID idiot!!!

Do you know what those bottom-ends are worth!? The Lupo GTI is running a six-speed box, with the starter-motor on the front like a 020 or 02J box, not on the back like a 085 box. These bottom-ends are traded over here for over a 1000 euro's, just so that people can fit a 6-speed box on their GTI's, and you just went about, and cut the entire bloody thing into pieces

don't quote me on this but isn't the polo GTI sump different to the lupo one ?

Bingo!

And please don't get me wrong on this post, it sucks that your AFH bottom-end failed, but in my opinion it's just such a waste of good money and a rare bottom-end, you could have sold that and bought yourself 2 Polo GTI bottom-ends for it :-(

also is the polo sump different in design, or bolt pattern to the lupo gti sump

word.

and 1000 euros, get to fuck mate, you can buy complete lumps for less than 500 quid

Not over here you can't ;) most Polo's and Lupo's over here in Holland or even Germany are 8v's, some occasional 16v comes by, and GTI's are not that commonly seen. But the engine's are very popular for transplate's though, low amounts offered, many wanted = high prices.

Example 1 (which is just an AJV GTI, a 120bhp from a mk4 GTI)

Example 2 (again just an AJV one, even without the gearbox or loom ecu whatsoever)

And no Lupo GTI engine on "our" Ebay over here at the present time. I'm guessing we're propper fucked over here when it comes to obtaining "nice" engine's then

you are when pikey cnuts like me hack them up with angle grinders <3

i would have traded the engine for a crate of weed, get on it jarn =D

i would have traded the engine for a crate of weed, get on it jarn =D

Haha, well, that would have been possible, only I'm afraid it's kind of "hard" to ship that over to the UK

I dont see how it can be worth much when the block is common as muck in the '98-05 Golf 1.6.

I've got exactly the same block in the shed but made of aluminium instead of cast iron,as it originally had a 1.4 crank in it and was from a '99 Golf. Surely that's better than an iron one?

Come and pick it up,you can have it for 200 euros

 have you seen eurotrash, they are all a bit loco on the continent

well, i've just bought myself a polo gti engine with avy code, going to do a pikey afh head swap on it and see how it goes
