impressive stuff tommo, bloody good power that esp considering the budget you've built it to.

Using an ABD certainly seems to be a lot cheaper way to get a few more cubes than 1W or forged pistons, I think mine would be fine at this boost on the standard CR as well, as I ran this much boost on the stock 1.3 lump with no issues.

Oh, its got a GT cam as well. Not sure anyone else has taken one of those to this sort of power.

Was a good day, thanks Jon for making it run smoothly.

Toms car aint all that to look at, but he sure knows his stuff under the bonnet. Legend for sorting out his geometry issues which saw him nearly not get a dyno run. GT25 blower with boost ramped right up

Anyone see what mine actually got on the second power run? It was over 180bhp when they took it to 7000rpm. Only down side is they forgot to hit the save button :!:

from memory it was 186 Nick....Great resullt....seriously youhave to take me out for a spin in it!

Chrispy how does your car get more powerful with age?

like a older women and a fine wine....they get better with age! its VOOODOO i think haha

Now I know why it's called a spoiler. Too low to run. Once settled between the rollers the spoiler rested on the floor. Owner said he couldn't remember the last time that happened as he gave me back £25. Wish I'd left the winter tyres on now.

Thanks to everyone who offered to help me take the stupid front spoiler off and refit it.

And to Jon for holding the clipboard all day.

Weirdpoint - Tommo's hosepipe ear defender pinking sensor

Highpoint - his ABD coughing then melting paint on the workshop floor... least that's what it looked like.

Need to find a rolling road where you sit on top of a single roller rather than being lowered between two rollers now.

Your power curve is very similar to Yoof's - he's got a lairer cam, but smaller turbo. Both have fairly flat torque curves from 4-6k, and are within 3bhp of one another at wheels. Be interesting to see what Yoof's makes on the bigger turbo and compare again. Awesome budget build!

jeebus tommos beast was an animal, good figures from max's mk2 as well

shame i couldnt make it, first one I've missed since joining the club but hey ho.

top results for all, and i bet you had a crackin day, see y'all next year

what CR is your engine at now tommo? have you used some other pistons or stacked gaskets? or a de-comp plate?

if u lot was up on power mine must be fucked!!!

as I'm 25 bhp down!

want me to post one of my print outs so you can see where you're going wrong? lol

yes show me you are graph lol

and nicks made 189!

Heres my printout rollingroad001.jpg

Bit dissapointed but to be honest have had no spare time lately and its a daily at the moment, prepartion consisted of cleaning it!

Thanks to jon for sorting a cracking day out and all those who attended.

Stand out cars of course was tommos (ghetto) turbo Ha Ha , Nicks G40 and the blue Mk2 breadvan.

FYI jon my gt is standard apart from slight airbox mod and cat back Bastuck exhaust.

Cheers Mark

i won then??? hahah

You sure did max

made good power tommo!

budget builds are the best!

I thought about stacked gaskets, but it just seems like too much of a bodge, plus you can end up with a cam timing ball ache, and I couldnt be arsed making and adjustable pulley.

TBF I wish I hadnt bothered, I was planning on running more boost than 18psi but it goes plenty well at that. But I machined the pistons down a bit, 2.4mm to be precise which equates to around 8.7:1. I didnt want to take too much off because the top ring would end up getting too hot, I should have probably opened the gap up a little on the top ring but I thought I would leave it and see if it nipped up, which it hasnt so far lol.

Oh and for comedy effect I machined the pistons on a lathe from 1912

Yoofs car will make way more power with the K04 I reckon, same boost and run more advance on the timing. If I wanted to keep up I would have to fit a metro turbo carb and a better exhaust manifold 8-)8-)8-)8-) .

Yoof's going for a GT2554R. The K03's great for road use - but even that makes for something that's a bit silly to drive at ten tenths on the road, so his car's becoming a track/drag strip toy so a bit of lag won't matter. Will prob stick with the K03 on mine, have switchable maps (and boost) - 133bhp/175bhp/more bhp at the flick of a switch, so can tone it down a bit for the road.

What turbo are you using? Would be tempted to get a spare ABD and wind up the boost 'til you start melting things. You said the carb jetting was giving you low-11:1 AFRs, so seems fair enough to lean it out a touch with some more boost.

Interesting on cams too, the GT cam's around 219deg duration (symmetric), and is the best OEM cam for a turbo - but on a little K03 the motor's too choked, so something lairer works much better. Whereas I think smallish cam and bigger turbo is the other way to skin the cat.

Tbh the results seem shocking, they must just screw with the rollers prior so everyone leaves happy and goes back next year!

Right, so thats a very similar turbo to mine. The compressor wheel on that is 1mm larger and the turbine wheel is the same. Its just a ball bearing turbo which is an odd choice, but should be fine as long as its lubricated right. So thats pretty much a 200SX S13 turbo, just a very slightly larger comp and ball bearings instead of journals.

I've fitted the turbine housing off a nissan terrano which is a .49 affair instead of the standard 200sx .64 housing because I wanted it to spool up around 3500rpm. I should imagine the .64 will spool it up around 4/4500 which will probs suit his engine as he has BVH etc.

As for the spare engine, that was my 1.3 spi engine, but it wouldnt blow up. I couldnt even really get it to detonate without running so much boost that it would damage the turbo. And when we stripped it down it was mint inside.

The idea is to wind up the boost till I started melting things, thats why i built it with all the worst bits like the 7mm stem valves, and didnt open the ring gap up on the rings that have already done over 100k miles, and the weedy ABD rods, and the £11 chinese big end bearings, and it runs on 'granville hyperlube' cos its the cheapest in the shop. And no oil cooler. Just to test the theorys on what you do actually need and what is just crap sold to you by tuning shops that tell you its necessary.

But the polo engines are just so strong. I darent go much further now because if I break the gearbox then I will take my bat and ball home, as its not somthing I can upgrade on the cheap. Plus its horrible to drive, and you cant set the timing/boost without doing 120mph and I dont want to lose my liscence. I'm not spending silly money on an LSD so it pulls its self all over the road when you accelerate.

I ran the standard cam for aaages with good results, standardish cams tend to be good because they dont have much overlap. The GT cam seems lairy enough and is a massive cam compared to the standard one.

Your torque curve will be kinder to the 'box than a highly tuned G40 one. I went through a few 'boxes when I was still running a G40-lader - only 170lb/ft or so, but it was delivered in one massive hit. The K03's not killed a 'box yet and it makes more peak torque and lots more power.

Marshall ran a 200SX 0.64AR T25 on his 1272cc lump with a lairer cam than yours. It was on full march by 4k, and peaked around 7k. He then switched to a smaller T25/T2? hybrid and ran a filthy 292deg cam to get the same powerband and see what'd happen. The aim with Yoof's is to get it to spool before 4000rpm - ideally around 3500rpm (compared to 3000rpm for the K03), but it might mean changing the cam and/or turbine housings. Either way, a bit of experimentation is called for - all with the aim of progress!

Think the stock cam's 196deg duration or something like that, I did have some cam data on my old laptop when I first did the conversion. All of the theory books say to go for mild cams with little overlap, but a stock cam and K03 meant 15psi at 1500rpm and peak power around 4500rpm. Was like a turbo diesel to drive, the GT cam was better - but something dirtier sorted it out.

Know what you mean about trying to set the car up on the road. Ask Hayesey about one of our mapping sessions on the road, lol. That's why he paid for some dyno time at John's in the end - much more controllable and a lot safer. Only pain with a dyno is that the rollers can get a bit noisy which prevents you using your ears as a tuning tool.

So by the sounds of it you have used the cams to delay the boost of the K03 till later up the rev range but the compressor is in total choke by 190bhp as it physically cant flow enough air. You could always open the diffuser gap up a litte but it wouldnt give you much.

If you want to spool at 3500 the easyest thing is a smaller turbine housing, there are a few cars which come with the .49 like mine. I only chose the nissan terrano one becuase it was the cheapest to get hold of. The Rover 420/620 turbos use the .49 T/hsg with the same turbine wheel. Its just such a ball ache that they all have different exhaust flanges so you have to make a new downpipe. Saying that though I have never seen the Bearing housing of one of these with Ball bearings, but it should be the same fitment.

For full boost at 3500 you are going to have to watch out for compressor surge, as you will be well over onto the left of the map, I've had to do all sorts to keep mine out of surge at low RPM. Although Yoofs engine will have a much better volumetric efficiency than mine with the BVH and G40 throttle body and stuff so you might be ok.

If your going for a lot of power I say stick with the cam that will give you the best power and adapt your turbo to suit your needs, changing cams to spool your turbo up is a bit of a compromise.

Tbh the results seem shocking, they must just screw with the rollers prior so everyone leaves happy and goes back next year!

It does appear strange, but there are a couple of cars on their that buck the trend. Karl CL's and Simmy's to name two. Aldon are pretty renowned for keeping their dyno up to scratch. They wouldn't need to tweek the figures unlike some tuning garages out there!

It was a colder morning than last year and when you take into account people might have different tyres on from previous times, it all makes a difference.

It was a total perfect cold morning with very humid air, just look at all the fog that was on the motorway.

Bit late but here's mine

Fully rebuilt GT engine 10k miles ago

Ported and polished head

G40 exhaust manifold

G40 catalytic converter

AMD chip

Dewedged throttle

Jetex induction kit and heatshield

(got 92 bhp last year - no changes to the mods, just engine run in a bit more?)

Nice car, good to meet you, and big burt, and plenty of other people who I have no idea of their names.

Well done tommo......just what i like to see, some suck it and see tuning instead of listening to hearsay 8-)

GT cam was bang on with my old T25, yes the turbo was laggy but once it spooled it was full on fun......just gutted i never had mine on the rollers at 1.5bar on the 1272cc 8.3:1 G40 bottom end

Edited by LregG

Mmm, I find the GT cam excellent. Mines not laggy at all really, full boost by 3.5k.

Did you have a 200sx turbo? S13? did you keep the standard turbine housing? What did it spool up at? Did you have any problems with surge?
