I would have thought having a air filter like the on a vavler would make it worse because it must just suck in hot air, the colder the air the better? right?

yes. but you can spot an intake pipe.

this is where a silicon 90 degree pipe and some chrome pipework wouldn't go amiss.

it has got a cold feed that was tucked out of the way whilst i was pissing about,, but even so it's pushing 120bhp acording to aldon R/R day the other week, so it's not to bad me thinks.

all i've done so far is bunged on that K&N got a raceland manifold 4-2-1, and had a custom full stainless de-cat system made by a firm called J.A.C in hucknall (nottinghamshire) it's 2" bore straight through and cost me £220 fitted, it's a bit loud though (

) getting some race cams when i can afford them and chipped but that won't be for a while yet though but defo before summer comes. and to be honest i think the R/R guys at aldon were a little generous with their figures maybe??

Yes, my muppet flatmate bought one for his 328i, never fitted it to that as the chances of it sucking lumps of the supercharger through the inlet seemed greater than that of it actually doing anything useful, instead i fitted it to a 1.8l non-turbo diesel which it made slower if anything due to the additional restriction on the inlet.

lets assume it's a powerful fan for its size and is pushing 200cfm, a pretty generous figure, close to 5600 litres per minute. (edit: not sure i've worked this out right. one cubic foot = approx 28 litres?) the 1.8l engine at 1000rpm idle is consuming 1800 litres of air a minute and at 4k (redline ish?), 7200 litres a minute. in order for the supercharger to be producing positive boost (ratio of 1.45 was it?) the fan would need to move about 2700 litres a minute at idle and over 10000 litres a minute at 4k rpm.

i'm not sure i;ve got these sums right now... made sense in my head :p I think it's right now, might produce enough flow for a minor boost at idle on a small engine but anything of a decent size will suffer, particularly higher up the revs

Bloody hell, BMW are doing well arent they??? A naturally aspirated engine with 100% volumetric efficiency!

I know what you mean though, but you dont have to have 'boost' to gain performance. In the early days of forced induction it was often just a case of pushing the vol. efficiency further up to, and not necessarily past, 100%.

haha epic thread, ok, as a rough rule of thumb, a 1.4 litre engine making 7psi of boost with a proper turbo would need a volume of air roughly the same as a transit van every second at full chat... the idea of that tiny little fan having enough flow rate to produce that is utterly rediculous

although i can see some merits in the theory of it, the old school umwelt vw diesels had a turbocharger that was set to 'boost' at 0psi, ie atmospheric pressure to make the combustion cleaner and reduce emissions, but that wasn't a performance thing!

i do like the idea of electric supercharging though

they're wasa bloke who fitted a leaf blower as i remeber and it added 2bhp but it sounded like a train it is on you tube i think

In theory an electric turbo would work but that thing is more like an electric "fan" or a hair drier. The "fan" in a turbo spools with the exhaust gases this "fan" is designed much like the turbine of a jet engine. It compresses air as its forces air through and is designed hold the pressure. If you want an electric turbo use the "fan" out of a real turbo hook it up to a mobility scooter (granny wizzer) motor or other high torque motor then wire it to your battery they both run at 12v dc. Only problem is it will be constantly forcing air through. This will retard the running of your engine if you car would run at all. lol

cool iv got bascly the same, i used a mini center section for a center pipe also with the raceland mainfolf and decat, my mate put it all together for me, i still need to to put some sort of back box on there as I'm useing the standered one, i was thinking of cams next aswell but from what i have read it gives it a lumpy idle and i use it as a daily so could prove to be annoying.

yeah sorry, it worked in my head, the theory's right it has to shift more air than it's capable of to produce a positive gain, pretty unlikely.

anyhoo don't listen to me, anyone who thinks it works should go and buy one then get their car dyno'd. That sort of power gains for such little money can't be passed up!

If we are speaking technically then it is infact a rotodynamic centrefugal pump. You could also get away with refering to it as a compressor.

There seems to be a few people doubting not just this particular product, but doubting the principle. Trust me if that exact product was scaled up slightly, or you used two of them, then theres no reason why it shouldnt make as much power as a descent turbo. Especially seen as the two share all the same features, they are just driven in different ways. There are more losses involved producing the power for the electric version, but not major it seems. Whereas obviously a turbo uses the free energy that all combustion engines waste into the atmosphere.
