WINDSCREEN WIPERS

VW POLO mk3 with windscreen wiper problem. Whenever I drive the car the wipers are always on. The two speeds are O.K., intermittent isn't and obviously they don't park. Local garage man says he has heard (and done one in the past) that the stalk switch can be a bit dolally with age. Any advice to possible alternatives or confirmation before I start taking bits off.

Also - blower motor resistor block. I understand a new resistor block is pretty difficult to get and secondhand ones are likely to be in a similar condition to ours. Does anyone know what gauge wire is used on this (my micrometer is buried somewhere) RW 45 or 65 and from where some might be obtainable from?
