Thanks for the compliments guys, keeps me motivated with this since I've not driven her for a couple weeks now. Means a lot coming from you Mark since your car has inspired me too.

I'm planning on getting the new lump in asap but there are so many small jobs that're getting in the way. On one hand a I just want to get it on the road but on the other i want to do it all properly.

Please give it to me

You'd like that wouldn't you :unibrow:

Click me for dyno graph >

I'll upload more pics and stuff soon but for now I have a bit of hillclimbing to do!

You did the right thing here Bro

Dont let max tell you otherwise

I'm going to buy one of those money saving tin things, label it the 'Buy EmDee's sexual MK2 coupe fund!'

This look fantastic and you must be well made up with the afh output - was it just the engine on bike carbs and a lightened fly for the result?

I always get slightly jealous and excited when a see a afh in a mk2.

Ruined it!

Looks awesome though!

haha thanks for the compliment, there was one moment during the build when I thought to myself "Why the fuck have I just taken out a perfectly good low milage engine that goes brilliantly?"

indeed, just those things - in fact i think i can get a bit more than that soon.

Ruined it!

Thanks Max, mission accomplished then. :-D

I've just spent the weekend at retrorides gathering and took the car up the hillclimb. It went like stink and got me there and back so can't complain. there should be lots of pics coming soon and maybe even a video? It was an amazing weekend and when my dopamine hangover clears up I'll put together a post of pictures and a bit more of the build.

Even more gutted i missed it now, woulda been worth going just to perv over this.

Hows yours run with the dizzy as it is? Most people I've spoke to etc all run with full advance...

Same :( lol

One off each runner on the manifold ?

One off each runner on the manifold ?

Yup :-D

Running great but she's a little smokey right now. We'll see what that is, hopefully not rings.

So I've got loads more pics and build stuff to come but I can't resist putting these up from RRG:

^ the only run all day where i made a mistake and the only one where I had a camera on the roof!

What a weekend! Highly recommended :-)

Graph looks and it goes well. Should it not of made more torque though mate ? afh's are 125 ish standard :S ?

Not digging or anything tho lol :)

Ps what was it like on fuel getting there dude ?

Jesus, that looks quick!

I agree, torque only peaked at about 102 ish and it should be higher. However I've found a pretty bad exhaust leak on both the mani and the backbox which I've had welded and also the centre section was blowing a bit, now those are sorted it feels quicker and sounds way better.

The other thing that could be affecting it is that it's smoking a little. I think it's valve seals?

Also since the rolling road I had a bit of a breakdown (er the car, not me). Turned out to be the rotor arm in the end, but in diagnosing and fixing it we've put the timing out (dont ask) so that is hopefully going to make a difference too, could also help the smoke. All new HT leads and plugs are on so hopefully I'll have a better graph to show you soon.

As for the what's it like on fuel question, I have been pleasantly surprised. Of course it's no diesel, but considering how I've been driving it I've been pretty impressed.

Oh and I think I'm swapping the GT box for the 8p. Not because of teh ratios, because I've blown up 1st gear and i cant afford to buy a gt box... Yeah happy days.

Smoking could be a number of things, you will have to do a number of tests to diagnose which component is failing.

Could also be why its down on power.

Looks great fun in the hillclimb, and looked quick, set up nicely for the little twisty.

Looked like someone was laying on the roof for the filming though! How was the camera mounted!?

Afh makes about 100 bhp and just under 100 torque standard.

Was a pretty cool little GoPro camera I borrowed from a mate. He had it on a suction cup tripod thingy. Sadly it was only on the car for one run and it wasn't a great one. It made me want a camera like that pretty badly :-)

It was set up well for the hill but I fear now that I'm putting the 8p back in I may lose that a bit. The GT box seems to keep it on cam pretty well although the motorway is not as fun. Ideally I guess i want a GT box with 5th from an 8p. Oh well the 8p that's going in is a known quantity and has only done 40k so I'm happy to keep it in there until I figure out a better alternative. Who knows I might prefer it?

Thanks for the kind comments though guys, I need to get off my arse and "finish" this sometime soon. Took it for a blast this weekend and it's not smoking at all now which is confusing. I've sorted out some filters for the carbs and once I get those on and the box in I'll take it back along to the rollers to get the timing done again. When that's sorted we'll see how it's running and if I need to bother with compression tests etc.

Not updated this for a while, just wanted to say that I may be selling the Compos. If anyone's interested let me know ;) Can't let them go for less than 350 though so no silly offers. All of the details about them are in this thread, they're 14x6 ET35.

Since the last update lots has happened, mainly involving the car getting driven! I really love this little thing.

So I got rid of the GT box after I lost first gear while racing PhilJ on a private racetrack in a superawesomeshowcartuned G40 (yeah I was pulling on it - heap o'shite lol). For the record he didn't build it!

The 8P is back in and although it's a lot longer in the lower gears I actually prefer it. It's still fucking quick but I can cruise on the motorway at 3k revs. ideally I'd want a hybrid box with GT 1234 and 8P 5th

Anyway, not much time for a proper update with pics etc now but I'll do one in the next few days. Laters.

Quick update:

Oil pressure sender was fubared. Oil pissing out of the top around the connector pin jobbie. I superglued it over Easter weekend until ECP was open on Tuesday and I popped down there and picked up a new one.

IMAG0925_zps8151906e.jpg

I also noticed the washers that were under it were mismatched and a bit old and probably create a few gaps.

IMAG0923_zps031e05ce.jpg

I tried it without washers but I need a minimum of two thick ones for it to tighten properly. After fitting the new ones it was still leaking a tad so I wrapped a little PTFE around it and now it's bang on. Doesn't leak at all.

The only thing that's wrong with the car now is I've been having a bit of trouble with my offside engine mount. It's still the original part, and since I've replaced literally everything else on this car, I've forked out for a new one - well I say new, but it's discontinued everywhere so I've got a nice 2nd hand one for cheap.

I bought new poly mounts ages ago for when I did the conversion, but when it came down to it we didn't have time to do them so they're still sitting here untouched.

So why buy one when you have a poly mount set at home?

This is why:

IMAG0927_zpse418c333.jpg

I'll get those swapped this weekend and then the car will be back to 100%

Gave her a bit of a clean the other week and snapped a few pics:

The mats were DISGUSTING!

IMAG0880_zpsafb0aa5b.jpg

I've not really restored them since I bought it, I was always planning on getting new ones, but the more I look at them, the more I like the original ones.

So I dug out some product and gave them a good going over.

IMAG0881_zps7d6c5248.jpg

Just another detail, but they make a big difference to the interior.

IMAG0879_zpsfde38e69.jpg

Then I took the car down to AmD Essex for the SEATCupraNet rolling road day. Needless to say I surprised a few Cupras on the way there ;)

149023_4090897209948_201803998_n.jpg

Ended up running 141 131bhp but I can't remember the torque. I've got the graph somewhere and can scan it in later. it was a nice linear shape with no bumps so that's what matters really. Anyway, the car is running great now, no more smoke - I've put that down to the fact that I was running no filters on the carbs (got some now) but she pulls like a train and isn't smoking so I don't even think I'm going to bother with a compression test.

Here's a quick video of it on the rollers - not very exciting tbh.

New wheels should be here this Friday but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them or not until I test fit. The Compos are so right for it, but I've had them on for a few years now and fancy a change.

141bhp :o whats the spec??

BAHAHAA I just got home and checked the graph - it turns out I am a massive dick. It was 131! I've edited the previous post.

In fact it was only 130.9 with 101.7 lb/ft

The ATSpeed rollers did get a better peak figure (there's a graph further up this page ^), but since then I've added the filters which may explain why I've lost 3 bhp.

Spec-wise it's standard except for the R1 carbs and a lightened flywheel. Oh and the exhaust and fannymould.

them washers you replaced the new ones look like standard washers if so they are meant to be copper washers and that's what seals the senders so you wouldn't of needed to add ptfe tape

just incase you didn't know not trying to be an arse or anything and very nice clean car I do like it

Ah nice one, I wondered about that but they were all I had. I'll replace them when I can find some copper ones. Thanks for letting me know and thanks for the compliment.

none of my cars have had any washers in the first place.
