Only thing I would change is the interior but that's only cause I drive to and from work in my overalls so would go from a light interior to a dark interior great effort!

New wheels should be here this Friday but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them or not until I test fit. The Compos are so right for it, but I've had them on for a few years now and fancy a change.

They're old and tatty but GAWJUS. Not test fitted them yet, but it's pretty likely that they wont fit at all!

Call me a big dirty scene whore if you like, but they're staggered, 14x7 and 14x7.5 which sounds okay BUT it's the offsets that'll cause me trouble. the fronts'll be fine but the rears look like minus something!

I know that so far I've done this car to drive properly, ie. not low, light wheels that fit etc. but I've decided to sacrifice some of that just because these wheels would look soo right if I can get them on!

I have a good friend who is an engineering legend. He has built some amazing stuff over the years and I'm chatting to him about narrowing the rear beam. I'll know by Saturday how much I need to trim off!

Ah go on then, I can't keep a secret for shit.

Took the 205/70/14s off and test fitted them today.

Luckily the fronts are perfect. They don't foul the calipers and don't stick out.

The rears however will need a bit of fettling :)

They don't stick out quite as much as I thought though which is good. Stay tuned and I'll see if I can get the rears on with no stickyoutyness!

I just need a few -20mm spacers.

Cheers, I've wanted a set since I was a kid. They're off an S1 Lotus Esprit. They're 4x100 14s, 7" fronts, 7.5" rears, offset on the front is 22 and the rears are -20!

I was lucky I found a bad listing and was the only bidder but generally they go for strong money.

I've definitely never said that. Actually for the past 2-3 years I've had something 'slammed' as a daily while I've owned this.

I've said I'm not going for that look with this car, but after a few years of owning it I'm a bit bored and fancy a change. Although the tyres won't be stretched and I still won't go silly low with it. This car is for driving.

I hope so. I've had a look and I only need about 15mm each side if I use a touch of camber to bring the top of the tyre under the arch, but hopefully I can get a little more so I don't have to use any.

Operation make-wheels-fit

I am lucky enough to have a good mate who does some of the best work I've seen so I decided to get him to help me out (ie. do it all for me). He's a top bloke and not only did he offer to put up with me - I mean put me up - while it was being done, he was actually pretty enthusiastic about it.

From the test fit I thought we needed to lose about 3cm on each side, but once I got tyres on the wheels (new 185/50/14 Yoko 539s) Dez's precise measurements told us exactly how much "we" needed to err eliminate.

Turns out to make the rears sit the same distance out as the fronts it was actually 22mm.

So this is what a rear beam looks like:

He took the mounting plate for the hub off

Measured (coat of primer and scratch with a compass for a thinner line) and started making some cuts.

EXACTLY 22mm removed!

Chuck the mounting plate back on with some pritt stick and sellotape.

Then fill the hole that's been created with some cornflakes packets, chicken wire and paper mache

Rinse and repeat for the other side then stick the hubs back on.

For the record it had some paint chucked at it before being finally put back on.

Et voila!

I want to say a big thank you to my buddy Dez (obviously) because he is a total legend and all round nice guy. He also helped me with a few other odd jobs on the car while things were drying/cooling down. He machined a few doo-dahs for fitting the choke cable which has been sitting in my scuttle panel since I fitted this engine! Something I hadn't got around to doing mainly because I don't have the facilities or skill to machine these bits. Also he supplied various bits of metal and nuts and bolts for me to mess about with while he was busy. I sorted out a mount for the radiator fan (which had fallen off on the way there!) and also swapped him some radius wheel bolts for some tapered ones as I thought the lotus wheels would use radius bolts but they don't.

Anyway, I'll get a few more photos of the car over the weekend as I'm off to Players at Goodwood tomorrow and Bromley Pageant on Sunday.
