That's definitely a load of cars bound for the scrap yard - loads of them have smashed windows and as others have said some of them are bumped against each other. Which should really be a sackable offense at that place, surely? If they're all being stored so they can be stripped of parts to be recycled then isn't it a bit retarded damaging glass and bumpers - they're both desirable scrap parts aren't they?

The main aim of the scheme was to increase consumer confidence in going out and buying goods (something which many stopped doing).

It certainly achieved that, however the way the government went about increasing confidence wasn't great (paying people to buy things which will increase the deficit further).

I can see three Ford Pumas, three B5 Passats, a Mk2 MR-2 T Bar, an E28 and E39 5 Series, an Audi A6, two Audi A4s, three W210 E Class Mercs and a handful of Mk4 Golfs, Focuses and E36 3 Series BMWs. All great disposable runarounds (and the E28 is a classic!), kinda going to waste.

That Scooby is a Sport (non turbo) so no loss there.

I've always wondered what happened to them. I can only hope they get a few weeks in the scrappy before they get crushed. If they crush them as they are without breaking for parts then it's even more ridiculous.

there's a lot more car's there (with quite a few on trailers still) and they are a lot more organised and neatly parked. i'd say they are the reason for the scrapage scheme. can you remember all the photo's of thousands of brand new car's all parked up at dock's and aerodromes up and down the country that were in the papers a while back?

They're definitely scrappage cars. Look at how they're parked compared to the vehicles in that satellite image.

Google Earth images are a few years old (at least three - my car is parked outside my student house in Cardiff and I moved out of there in October 2006!) so the airfield would've been used to store other stuff back then. Some of those will be stock for dealers, I guess others might be part ex cars.

To be fair most of these would've had large stocks stored there anyway, but at the moment it's rammed full!

What's interesting about RAF Upper Heyford is it's where the press fleets for the VW Group and Nissan are stored (hence why if you look at road tests in mags these cars almost always have registration plates beginning with an O). I think Mazda are there too, but i've got a feeling they've changed recently. If you put it into Google Maps you'll see it storing a few cars, now it's rammed full of other stuff too.

And you'll also notice the new stock is being stored in neat lines not bumper to bumper like the scrappage stuff.

Bloody fair amount of sense right there ^

And in addition to helping the market, I'm sure a secondary aim / added bonus was to get all the worse emitting vehicles off the road to 'help the climate'.

We might be in uproar about it (it does break my heart, some of them..) but in the long run, its a sure way to ensure less emissions when tempting people with reductions on newer cars, to get all the shitters off the road.

Plus, you are all looking at those cars as perfectly working and serviceable. I bet around half of them are bags of shite, possibly MOT failures that have done a hard, poorly maintained 150k or more and will cost more than they are worth to keep on our roads.

From the governements point of view, car's will only ever be a way to get from A-B and a way to make money.
