Scrappage Scheme..

We might be in uproar about it (it does break my heart, some of them..) but in the long run, its a sure way to ensure less emissions when tempting people with reductions on newer cars, to get all the shitters off the road.

Plus, you are all looking at those cars as perfectly working and serviceable. I bet around half of them are bags of shite, possibly MOT failures that have done a hard, poorly maintained 150k or more and will cost more than they are worth to keep on our roads.

You haven't considered how much emissions/energy is required to produce a new car over keeping a perfectly serviceable one running for 5 years.

Oh and then the emissions/energy required to scrap an old one. Not to mention filling landfill with the parts that can't be recycled or salvaged.

The whole green thing was a load of crap. The scrappage scheme was just a way to get the motor industry out of a hole.

And in addition to helping the market, I'm sure a secondary aim / added bonus was to get all the worse emitting vehicles off the road to 'help the climate'.

and what will these lower emissions achieve? 'global warming' is already unraveling as a massive lie used just to tax the shit out of us

all the car's had to have an mot to be eligible for the scheme, and even if half of them are shafted, that still leave half of them that isn't.

and i don't see how the scheme was a success, dangling a carat in front of a donkey only works while the carat is there, now the carat has gone what's gonna happen? the the inconvenient truth is that it's a very weak market with most of the money from it going to overseas companies. so what has pumping all this money in to it really achieved for this country? and will this kinda of scheme be set up for other markets? what about the building trade where most of the money stays in this country? where was the help for them?

Gotta agree with Mclovin tbf..

Wasn't it proven that producing a new car is worse for the environment than running a 10 year old car for another few years?

Either way, I stand firmly against it, I hate this whole guilt-trip recycle nation that we're being forced into..

I agree with you that they way government is telling us 'global warming' is our fault is a load of bull, cycles of the earth's life like the ice age and all that.. When emissions regs were first introduced though, they weren't to battle 'global warming', but to reduce smog and air pollution. I'm sure the same thing stands today, even if it is much less of a problem with half new cars and half old cars.

Fair enough about the MOT bit, I didn't actually know that. That does seem to invalidate my points somewhat.

Just trying to bring a different view on things :D

True.. but you would think that the newer car is going to run for a fair amount of years and the scrapping of most of these old cars was inevitably going to happen in a few years time anyway, be it a bit more staggered than what we've seen. The new cars were always going to be built, so the emissions from building them would have come anyway..

By speeding up the process, they are cutting down on the shite emissions coming from the old cars that would have been on the road for a few extra years had they not been scrapped.

There is a considerable difference in emissions coming from brand new cars compared to +10 year old cars. Even a few extra years of motoring with these old cars would make a considerable difference compared to todays emission levels.

Fair point about disposing of what can't be salvaged though, and in agreement with Smithy I hate how today is such throw-away society.. eventually it's going to bite us in the arse.

I think theres a mk1 caddy, bottom right . Jag sovereign at the top and by the look of it my nans old 3 series in the bottom right :(

What you also have to consider is the fact that a large proportion of people have no real emotional attachment to the car they drive. A car is just another consumer good, same as a toaster or a microwave.

Would you trade in your old TV or laptop for a shiny new one if you were going to get a nice fat discount courtesy of the Government? I'd imagine the answer would be yes in most cases.

It's just the way our capitalist, consumer economy works: spend and let someone else worry about the consequences.

No one has pointed out yet the fact there is only 1 6n - unless you look a bit closer than me and can spot more.

I can honestly understand the positives of this scheme but I think the negatives far outweigh it.

the one part of the scheme that really struck a chord was the idea that you would trade in your car with its awful CO2 emissions and get something 'greener'. Problem is that Global warming is actually a farce and the worlds getting colder.

This means many people are buying new cars and getting themselves into debt for no real reason!

I'm sure that the total carbon footprint of a car by the end of its life, somthing daft like 80% of it is all from its manufacture, and only 20% from the fossil fuels it burnt.

Only the shells can't be used again... tbh thats good news for me :) Some decent cars in the scrappy :)

I couldnt give a shit about global warming, ill be long gone before the world ends so why should i feel guilty about driving a bangor of a car that kills a fish everytime its started up?

Exactly, it's not as if any generations before us cared, why should we?

haven't car prices generally increased by 2k at least since the scheme began though?

Other way around. It's something like 15% manufacturing, 85% from fuels burned. And that's over a long lifespan.

The longer you keep it the more you even out the damage done by the manufacturing process.

It'd be a nightmare if everyone was buying new cars.

But then the process of disposing of scrap cars isn't that good for the environment either.

fact the earth will go through a cold period every couple of thousand years

fact global warming is just a new way of putting global cooling which has been happening for millenia

fact the government are greedy sods who thought the scamage scheme would work but didnt realise the negative were so great that it wasnt worth doing

fact the earth has been this way before the ozone can be repaired

question if the world ended tomorrow would you have liked to spend your life worrying or knowing you had a bloody good time

so to sum up global warming is bull as the world is getting cooler the scrapage scheme didnt really succeed the government are still greedy and were all still getting screwed

That's why I find it funny, the Earth is around 4.5 billion years old, and humans as we know ourselves are around 200,000 years old.

The Earth has been hit by metoers, its been through an ice age, and as of 50 years or so, we're apparently destroying a whole planet with a few fossil fuels? lol..

two words the government understand oh to well bull sh*t

arrrggghhhh fuckin hell - emissions doesn't just affect 'global warming' and the ozone layer like the media tells you!..

it proper fucks up the air you breathe in every day. the whole reason emissions regulations started in cali in the 50s was because fuck loads of people were actually dying from air pollution caused by all the cars on the road. there was a visible smog in the states climate, same in london with that smog that killed like 5000 people or something?

the number of cars on the road is only going to increase, so if we arent going to gas ourselves to extinction then you do need greener vehicles. even today, air pollution is the cause of a fair percentage of deaths each year, and shortens other peoples life span considerably.

if everyone had the attitude that some of you here had, that we should keep running the old shitters and not run newer greener cars because there is still life left in them, air pollution would continue to screw loads of people over and we would get nowhere. you should all just be grateful that there are those who aren't so sentimental and buy these newer green cars to lower air pollution so we can all enjoy our old rich-running, carbon emitting shite heaps!

and as panda said, now there are more sparres available for everyone! so quit the bitching and grab em while you can!

i had a bit of a laugh out laud moment earlier, while reading the paper i read a quote from one of the top uk business men that mr Brown say's had 'been deceived by the tory's'...

It's a bit rich for Gordon Brown, who has introduced more stealth taxes than any one in history, to talk about deception

deception and bullshit seems to be what this government is built on, if they win this election on more lie's and bull shit it's only going to get worse.

if you die of 'air pollution' then tuff shit, just like if i die from choking on a bit of food. 5 day's a week i work in an environment where the air is thick with carbide dust (it's cancerous if you don't know), i don't moan and i don't complain, i know it's there and i get on with it knowing full well it could kill me in the long run because what ever will be will be. which is exactly the same for any randomer walking down the road breathing in bus fumes, if their that bothered about not dying they could stay in and never leave the house, apparently this way they will live forever.

haha as if sum 1 has scrapped a scooby and a big mercades jeep are they bad mind you sayin that our local breakers yard just got a mk2 golf with 33thousands miles on clock thye got a astra mk3 sport with 42thousand miles and 1 of my mates fully kitted mk4 golf it's unreal some of the stuff they gettin in u just wish you could have been at the car place to buy them off then b4 thye scraped them

bloody hell, i bet you couldn't give a more childish and close-minded response if you tried

Everyone dies though, thats the only certainty in life, who cares if its by air polution or by getting hit by an air poluting bus, death is death at the end of the day, no avoiding it
