Scrappage Scheme..

No, I'm sure you're not. But that's hardly a realistic attitude to take where global matters are concerned, and where it's people other than yourself that are affected. Plus you speak with this 'Que Sera' look on things, what would happen if something like your kid's school was found to have been harbouring deadly levels of asbestos in it's structure which had caused them serious illness, potentially for life? I doubt you would be feeling quite the same, and would most likely end up blaming the government or some other authority for such a mishap.

And even if you wouldn't give a crap about that, there are people in the world who do actually give a crap and who don't want to be breathing in pollution everyday. In fact, I'm failing to see your point at all now.. are you saying that we should just scrap all emissions regulations altogether, and go back to when there was smog everywhere and you couldn't breathe properly just because the limited few car enthusiasts that make up our population want to run on bike carbs? That's what it seems, as you clearly don't think having cleaner air for everyone to live in is actually a good thing?

You are either seriously close-minded and can't actually realise that there is a bigger picture to motoring and controlling cars on our roads, or just being childish and arguing for the sake of it?

Everyone dies though, thats the only certainty in life, who cares if its by air polution or by getting hit by an air poluting bus, death is death at the end of the day, no avoiding it

If I came and punched you repeatedly in the face, what would you do? I'm sure at some point you would try and intervene and stop me, rather than just accepting it as your fate and let me continue until you were dead.

And if an oncoming car suddenly swerved into your path as you were driving, I'm sure you would attempt some evasive driving to avoid death rather than just allowing your fatal collision to take place.

In the same way, I'm pretty sure that most people would rather not breath in toxic fumes everyday if there were actually measures that could be taken against it.

i'm not saying that people don't have the right to breath clean air, but if people want to drive around in old bangers then that's their right as well. this planet is as much mine as it is yours, i'm only here once and i intend to enjoy myself while i'm here and i enjoy driving and working on old bangers. i get fucked off with people trying to make me feel guilty because i choice to drive an old car, every day i have the government and Self-righteous pricks trying to tell me i shouldn't drive an old car because my kids will die and the world will end in a massive fire ball, is fear and guilt the only way they can try to get people to do what they want them to do these day's?

I know a lot of people who could really really do with some of those cars, people who can't afford decent cars and drive around in old rusty deathtraps (I wouldn't say no).

New Labour: Because fuck the poor.

As for air pollution, did we ever find out if it's better to build more cars or to keep old ones running?

Id be bobbing and weaving mother chucka, you wouldnt get close enough to connect :-p

I'm not saying dont do something to avoid/reduce bad stuff happening, if thats what you want to do. Just like I'm saying if i want to come up and punch you to death/swerve my car into yours for no reason at all, or take a fish and force feed a cat to make some stupidly sick fragua inspired fatty feline feast, or anything else totally outlandish, then i will

My point was, that youre not going to stop something indirect that has a mass of dedication/determination behind it, so why waste energy and affect 'precious' well being by trying. Its not like theres an evil CO2 empire plotting a global killing spree, polution is just a case of shit happens

Cest la vie

na it's cool man i agree with you about the old cars. in fact i've never owned a new car, my family never buys them, and i don't intend to ever buy one as it just isn't worth it lol

i suppose you could say that the scrappage scheme was an alternative to the 'fear and guilt' tactic, adding 'bribery' to the list lol

i'm not gonna write an essay but arn't they causing more pollution, think about the manufacturs making the cars and the scrappys taking apart all them millions of cars .....these places dont run on water and the machinary used isnt exactley fuel efficiant, then along with all this extra pollution you've got people driving there new ones around while there old bangers are getting smashed up whats causing polution as well?

my mate works for a local car breakers tht specalise in jeeps , jap stuff etc they were getting loads of cars in on the scrappage scheme jus to be crushed the other day he had a r32 skyline brought in on the scappage thing wtf a fuckig skyline he was gutted when he had to crush it mental

The Green Party are as anti-car as people get, they tend to get their facts right (being a political party),and even they claim that keeping an old car on the road instead of scrapping it and building a new one is better for the environment - and the longer its replacement is delayed, the less damage is done per year, thus the better.

The whole point of the scrappage scheme was to jump-start the struggling motor industry to help the economy, but that hasn't worked because most of the cars sold were foreign.

In fact, the people here in Britain who used to service the old cars, and organise part distribution, have had their business hit.

And CWA, it seems you could do with some experience tuning and testing bike carbs before throwing such statements about - the last time mine was at a mate's MoT garage,it read so clean he thought his equipment was faulty. It runs cleaner than many efi engine's we've put on it,and being relatively environmentally sensitive for a petrol head,i wouldn't run them otherwise.

If i lived near one, I'd be straight over the fence with some spanners.

CP Group buy steal harmless and totally legal day dead of night out?

Bit late in replying to this, but I've just been having a look at the photograph on the news page that shows a close up of a section of the cars waiting to be scrapped.

And in the shown section it would seem on the face of it every car there would be a perfectly reasonable car to drive about it...they all look clean and tidy and perfectly respectable. And considering the scheme rules I can safely assume they were all driven into position.

One thing that did surprise me though was the actual cars themselves...i.e. ones that, before the scheme started, could have fetched a good part if not more of the £2000 that was offered for the car. So I'm thinking...if they really wanted a new car why didn't they just sell up and have £2000 cash to go to the dealer with?

Every part of the scheme and the reasons people went in for it really never made sense to me.

There was a car there that really stood out to me, it was a black VW Passat Saloon, looks tidy enough and again because of scrappage rules its safe to assume it was driven to where it rests now. Yes rules state it should be scrapped...but what other reasons is there to scrap it...none! Its worth what £1000-£1500, it looks clean enough, they are reliable, they are safe, they are spacious, they are everything a young family of 3 or 4 could ask for in a car.

Maybe if the Government were clever they would take every roadworthy car thats been put in for the scheme and sell them all for £1000 each. That way they could maybe make back alot of the £28million wasted on the scheme and use it to pay off some of this countries debts, meaning they can take a little pressure off the tax payer as we leave this recession behind us!

This is really pissing you off isn't it Steven...

You have no idea Scott haha.

What really pissed me off from the start was it pushing up the price of used cars. As soon as the scheme started you couldn't buy anything for less than £500 unless it was something that had no MOT or didn't run (making it not elligable for the scheme).

And now, all the perfectly usable shitters you could buy for £500 have gone!

I suppose I could, fancy posting or PMing me those emissions figures? I've taken a particular interest in the subject since my car keeps failing on it.. I could definately make use of some shared knowledge and experience

Thats true...i haven't been offered anything cheapish since i got the Mk2 over 8 months ago.
