If you're at all bothered about being attractive to girls then don't get a mini. All the girls i know think a man driving a new mini is sad haha

I used to drive my brothers GT TDI 130 and i loved it. It pushed my head back in my seat and had so much torque, fast car. Although i don't think its a real

drivers car. Its too comfy and heavy!

I hadn't considered mini's because I thought they were too expensive, and with low milage they still are, I'm also not wild about how they drive and would choose a 17/82 over one, even if they weren't girls cars.lol. My girlfriend doesn't like clios and wants me to get a BMW instead, which is fine because I will assume she never wants a lift anywhere in the clio 8-)

If I see a GT tdi available to test drive then I'll go and check it out, otherwise I'm just going to get a decent 172, I've driven a few of them and know I like them, they are lots of fun and nice and cheap!

Thanks for all of your opinions!

I'm pretty sure there is a ban against using the words fun and mk4 golf together.

Have you thought about a 5 series -> 530d? good power, cos its a bm it should be drive nice, all mod cons, will shift :D , should be able to get one in your price range ish or is that totally outa the question :S :p

True. Add diesel and it gets about as fun as a funeral.

Petrols have 'life' in them,as do light cars. The Golf 130 i drove had neither.

My mum has got a GT tDI 115

and that is pretty quick (a lot of torque)

so I wouldn't imagine a 150

Anyway you guys are saying the mk4 is a FAIL, even though I'm not a fan of diesels, it just isn't a fail

It's looks so awesome, they are very very reliable and also gives good milege on one tank

OK there are some fail ones, the ones with no colour coded bumpstrips and wheel trims

My mums got a silver one with colour coded bumpstrips and standard alloys but when it's sparkling clean it looks crazy

Sorry for the essay guys LOL

maybe he's got a thing for morbidly obese women?

Mk4s have aged badly, I think the Mk5 looks brilliant now but wasn't too sure when it first came out.

The Mk4... I mean, this is supposed to be a GTI!

I think the mk4 is one of the best looking golf's :ninja:

Put it this way it's no mk3! :-D

mk1 and mk5 defo best looking (and possibly best to drive?)

Exactly 1 month on from the last post I am now closer to buying this car! And I've still not decided!

I'm not sure I can justify the petrol costs for a 50mile round trip everyday and am still thinking about diesels!

What about a focus tdci? a high mile E46 320d with a remap? I am swaying more towards comfort and efficiency as I have realised it's going to mainly be a commuter car. The 1.2 polo can't hack it on the motorway and I fear a clio wouldn;t be that much different!

my dad has a focus tdci and i drove it for about a year so was pretty used to it.

easy to drive and comfy, loads of turbo lag, you put your foot down wait 3-4 secs then the torque kicks in and your of.

i thinks its a 1.6 with 120ish bhp and goes well in a staight line, think the top speed was 135mph and felt like it had a little bit more.

and they are very ecomical, well equped,

pretty nice all round cars

What about an ibiza cupra or leon cupra the PD version?

I have friends with both and they pull like a fooking train!

Here are the cars described above.

Buy a Fabia VRS! Cheap (Sub £4K now) a good remap and a rear ARB will make it much fun! Only downside is the light coloured interior - easy enough replaced with a 9n3 GTi interior or a black leather interior out of a VRS SE

A Couple of pics for inspiration:-

Those seats look friggin mint!! Although I think a skoda badge is a step to far, That fabia looks cool, but it's not my style - 5 doors hatch? No thanks

I'm sorry...but someone considering getting a FOCUS should not be poo pooing a skoda haha

FOCUS = DULL!

They are both awesome cars, really reliable and both remapped and on coilovers ;)

the Fabia is low insurance as well, group 9 i think? could be totally wrong

my mate has the mk4 150bhp anniversary, in my car he pulls away no question, but he let me drive it, it jus didn't feel like it pulled, watching the clocks go up is a diff story. i was shocked i was going so quick, well built car so you don't feel the speed. if its fun your after get a gt and drive the roads off n.wales, my recomendation bala to harlech round the big dam, or dogellau to welshpool road make sure you wear protection tho as you may go splat either in your pants or off the road if your to confident lol

Oh yer sure, I'll just route that into my daily commute!

I am still in two minds about the diesel/boring against petrol/fun. I think I might get a clio and see how it goes, worst comes to worst I'll sell it and will have had some fun in the mean time.

As much as I like them, the leon cupra's are £££, at least 6k for one that's even half decent, I'd rather get a cheaper car and pay for the petrol!

 fair doo's, but at least the focus handles half decently!
