I am a grammar Nazi but I still use kk, I justify it to myself by saying it's short for ok ok

i notice that some grammar on here isnt "ideal" but it isnt something thats a major issue

what i can't understand is why people are saying it makes them angry that other peoples spelling or grammar is so bad, if this was a forum dedicated to some thing to do with writing or education then i could understand, but this is a site about vw polo's. it's a site where people come to pick up advice and tips on fixing or modifying their polo, why would you expect to come on here and find perfect grammar?

on this site you will get a lot of people that weren't very good at reading or writing (for what ever reason) but excelled at handy work, and most of these will be the people that then went on to learn and work on cars, some of these will be the people telling you how to swap an engine or change your clutch on here.

now how would you people that are smarter than thou when it comes to reading and writing but don't know your arse from your elbow when it comes to fixing cars like it if these people started threads on here about the dip shits that don't know how to set the timing on a 1992 polo GT? after all fixing polo's is what we are here for, not to learn grammar.

I think you're missing the point somewhat here. Being smart isn't part of it. Common sense comes into place when it's a simple matter of telling the difference between to and too. As said at the start of this thread, I'm not having a go about it, was just wondering if anyone else had actually noticed.

Comparing knowing your way around an engine to spelling and grammar is just idiotic. Being able to write is a fundamental requirement to using these forums and something that's generally required in day to day life. Being able to fix cars isn't.

google toolbar is a god send (that's why most of my posts have been edited because I forget to check).

I like most people type quite fast and on a rant look at the keyboard and not the screen.

I like to check my posts by reading them after typing them.

Although as said earlier it is not an English exam it is a car forum.

yes comparing the 2 is idiotic, i can't spell for shit and it has never hampered my life in the slightest (and i have a good job to prove this), although i couldn't of got to work every day like i needed to if i didn't know how to fix a car when it fucked up.

writing means fuck all, i work in engineering and the amount of people that are shit at reading writing like me at my place would shock you i recon, especially when you consider that it's them making parts that keep planes in the sky and rockets going in to space, but as i pointed out earlier, some people are good at writing while some are good at working with their hands. it's the good with their hands people that tend to go into the same kinda trades as me making shit that you 'clever' people couldn't live without

the only time i have to write any amount of shit is on here, in my my to day life the most trying thing i have to do reading and writing wise is to read the Sun on my break time other than that i don't have to read any thing other than a few numbers, i bet the same could be said for a lot of folk in a lot of lines of work?

oh and btw, being able to to write isn't a fundamental requirement of these forums, having people that know their way around an engine bay is. people don't come on here to learn which kind of 'your' to use, they come here to learn what the firing order on a 1997 16v polo is

'Thank you' consists of the verb to thank and the directy object you

e.g. Why thank you, kind sir.

'Thankyou' is a noun.

e.g. "I'd like to give a big thankyou to my supporters"

I didn't realise you could use knowing your way around an engine bay to converse on these forums. If you couldn't write, you couldn't post on here full stop. I personally don't know my way around an engine bay too well. Still manage to post on here, and have an enjoyable time doing so at that. Anyone who is completely incapable of writing is welcome to somehow post on here and prove me wrong.

I've been following this thread a little, I wasn't going to add to it but what the hell.

Everyone makes small spelling mistakes, that will always be the case. But it is annoying when I read posts by people seemingly without any basic grasp of spelling and grammar. I don't know how many posts I've read and thought, 'what the hell is he on about?', or 'WTF is that guy trying to say?'. Yes, we don't join a car forum for English lessons, but in this day and age with internet forums and e-mail being so widely used surely being able to get your point across in a clear and understandable manner is fundamental? And even if the only thing you do read is the Sun newspaper, this is written in plain English, surely you'd pick it up a bit?

The English language is always evolving, but I think that the shit-awful text speak phenomenon is possibly going to change it for the worse. Sometimes it does seems that illiteracy rules.

I've just joined another forum and the final thing you have to do when registering is answer a question such as; "What is the 14th letter of the alphabet?". It's to prove you can read and count, maybe CP should employ the same thing?
